TAMPA, Florida (AP) -- Deep-sea explorers said Friday they have mined what could be the richest shipwreck treasure in history, bringing home 17 tons of colonial-era silver and gold coins from an undisclosed site in the Atlantic Ocean. Estimated value: $500 million.

A jet chartered by Tampa-based Odyssey Marine Exploration landed in the United States recently with hundreds of plastic containers brimming with coins raised from the ocean floor, Odyssey co-chairman Greg Stemm said. The more than 500,000 pieces are expected to fetch an average of $1,000 each from collectors and investors.

Won't the value drop if they are that common?

Wonderful work, Odyssey. Interesting how careful they have learned to be about being close-mouthed; they won't announce the vessel, the details of the coins, or anything else about it, except that they made a major find. Wow.

They're doing it right, by all appearances.

They will release the coins intot he market over time to prevent too much sag in price; these are colonioal era, uncirculated coins which, reportedly, have survived in excellent condition.

Hey, that's a great way for drug dealers to launder money - silver is cheap to buy - make fake OLD coins and flog them at a premium - who wants to share the book and film rights with me?

Well, I know how to make convincing pre columbian artifacts but that doesn't mean I am willing to defraud an unsuspecting Republican arms dealing billionaire and sell him some for 33 million $.
