Please, if possible send me country music gatherings happening from the 5th to 28th in May, not necessarily with top artists, I would like to see "real" singers, kind of family gatherings around southern West Virginia, Kentucky and southwestern Virginia. Planning to drive alone along these parts of the US, looking for real roots of folklore or typical country music. I like to listen to Hank Williams, Carter Family, not "modern" country singers. |

From: harpgirl The Fiddler's Grove event in Union Grove NC might fit the bill...the old fashioned way would be to look in the storefront windows and see what's going on locally...I do this in Mississippi whenever I pass through...festivals are easy to find on the web if you do a search for southeast festivals...there is lots of bluegrass music in that area...Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine has a great list...harpgirl |

From: catspaw49 Hi Sandy A plug for the old alma mater......Berea College is a center for arts, music, dance, and crafts in Kentucky. The school has a strong community committment to the Appalachian region and the preservation of it's history. It is tuition free with a work study program and 90% of the students come from 244 Appalachian counties.Truthfully, the place is getting a bit artsy-fartsy for my taste, but they still have many wonderful events. MAY 14-16 the Appalachian Center of the College is doing their Celebration of Traditional Music. For the past few years, this has also been held in conjunction with the statewide show of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftspeople making for a great weekend in every way...a bit of something for everybody. This may be a good weekend stop where they could hear alot, see a lot, and learn a lot while having a good time in a beautiful setting. Just a thought. The town of Berea has a website at http://www.berea.com/index.html and the Berea College site is at http://www.berea.edu/. That week, Frank and I were the music that was happening, along with a great banjo player from the town who came over to pick a few with us. (Great, not in contrast to the banjo player in "Frank and I"). I'm told that lately they've been having square dances every week, with local people joining the volunteers for music and dance. |

This group has some type of event weekly, but the one on this date is one of their two BIG festivals. After reading his message again I realize they may not be interested in Blue Grass, although it is truly American. But if they are interested in roots and folklore, I'd really recommend they stop at Berea. Sorry Sandy if I push the place, but you can get a real flavor for the region there and the Traditional Music Fest is excellent. catspaw |

Frank Proffitt's son Ronald went there, and after graduating, went on to get a PhD in Physics at Kentucky. We were all extremely proud of him; a wonderful young man. Then, on his way home, right after getting the degree, he was killed in an automobile accident. Heart-breaking! George and Gerry Armstrong's daughter Jennifer also went there and is now making music and telling stories professionally, working out of the Boston area. I'm going to forward your info about the Bluegrass Fest to the Brazilian dentist. He'd probably enjoy it, too, even if Bluegrass isn't his first love.
