I have been listening to the song and can't quite make out all the words. I like the way Dwight does it. Hope someone will be able to print his exact words. Thanks |

26 Jan 13 - 07:17 AM (#3471610) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gospel Plow (Dwight Diller) From: BanjoRay Try this for size: Put Your Hand To The Plow (Dwight Diller version) Went to church the other day For to hear them sing and pray Chorus Put your hand to the plow and hold right on Hold on, hold on Put your hand to the plow and hold right on preacher said we had to repent So right down the aisle I went Chorus never been to heaven but I've been told Its a first class city and its features (future's?)gold Chorus Next to Peter all nice and neat He wouldn't let the saviour to wash his feet Chorus Peter got exercise in shales ? My feet my hands and nails ? Chorus Paul and Silas bound in jail had no one to go their bail Chorus Paul and Silas began to shout You must know when all they walked out Chorus Got my hand on the gospel plow Wouldnt pack a-nothing for my journey now Still a couple of dubious bits, but nearly there Ray |
19 Mar 13 - 03:09 PM (#3492281) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gospel Plow (Dwight Diller) From: Brian Peters Ray, if you're still reading... The version collected by collected by John and Alan Lomax from Elihu Trusty in 1937 is in the DT, and includes the verse: "Peter got anxious and he said, Wash my feet my hands and head" I think that's your mystery verse 5 (Dwight's accent is little difficult for us Limeys to follow). As for: "Never been to heaven but I've been told Its a first class city and its features (future's?)gold" I've always heard that as 'the streets is gold', which fits in with the version Cecil Sharp collected from schoolchildren in Oneida Institute, Clay Co., KY. They sang: "Haint been to Heaven, but I've been told That the streets are pearl and the gates are gold" |

09 Oct 17 - 12:31 PM (#3881143) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gospel Plow (Dwight Diller) From: Brian Peters I was just reminding myself of these lyrics, and found there's a more recent recording of Dwight Diller singing this song, with the vocal easier to hear than on his earlier CD, on Bandcamp: Dwight Diller: Put Your Hand to the Plow In this take he sings the following lines: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John All them apostles are dead and gone... Chance McCoy also sings this verse. I still love the way Dwight does it, though. |
