20th Cleckheaton Folk Festival 2007

19 May 07 - 07:54 PM (#2056683)
Subject: Cleckheaton Folk Festival 2007
From: Shantyfreak

The festival season is back in full swing and plans are well under way for the 20th Cleckheaton Folk Festival, always a popular choice and not just with Yorkshire folkies. Things just keep getting better year after year and this year will be no exception.
Right from the start there will be plenty for everybody. Singer-songwriter extraordinaire Vin Garbutt, whose pedigree is even longer than the festivals, will be holding a meet in the Town Hall as well as headlining the Friday evening concert at the Town Hall but there will be plenty of other good acts around. These include the up and coming folk rock band "Something Nasty in the Woodshed", The fine acapela trio of "Craig, Morgan & Robson" as well as many local artistes such as "Whitney Gin"

After the Parade, Saturday sees the start of street entertainment with a mediaeval feel that culminates in competition for the Whickham Trophy amongst a host of dance sides. For the shoppers there is a French market and a craft market as well as all the usual Cleckeaton shops and stalls. With half-a-dozen concerts, 4 workshops, numerous specials and 2 meets as well as sessions and singarounds; all ages and tastes should be catered for. Fine artistes abound but Real Time and local group the Duncan McFarlane Band in the afternoon and Something Nasty and Craig, Morgan & Robson in the evening are the Town hall concert stars with The Demon Barber Roadshow rounding things off with their own late night concert.

Sunday promises more of the same well tried mixture of meets, specials, singarounds and concerts with Ruth Fuga and Keith Powell and others at the Town Hall concert which ends with an extended piece from the best female Celtic group around, Cherish the Ladies. The finale of the weekend will be the concert in the Turnstile featuring a number of local artistes as well as the multi talented New-Zealand version of Eric Bogle better known as Martin Curtis, presided over by Joe Nicholson no mean singer himself and previous winner of the prestigious Traditional folk singer competition at Saltburne.

For those who wish to take a more active part there will be the usual singaround and musicians sessions and, a new venture this year, a Poems and Pints session with a focus on the words rather than the music.
Adding to the entertainment over the weekend will be amongst other items, Tai Chi sessions with Barry Lonsdale on Saturday and Sunday, a new guided walk on Sunday, Sylvia Needham on the life and works of Sydney Carter, and a series of special workshops in the new Music Room plus a variety of street performers including the mighty Zulu Nation.

Of course I could not mention everyone who will be performing but a visit to the festival website at WWW.CLECKHEATONFOLKFESTIVAL.ORG will give you a full run down.

ATTENTION ATTENTION ATTENTION
There is still chance up to the 31st of May to get reduced price tickets. Contact the website, or email info@cleckheatonfolkfestival.org

I'm also down to do a guitar workshop on that day...
more detail I'll post here when more time - off to the studio now!
....Attempting to have the new 'electric' band album finished in time for Clecky!
The 'leccie' line-up of the band also at Clecky - last on in the

We're looking forward to that 'un!
We remember how good the food was last time we were at CleckFest!

The campsite is where it normally is and has stewards, basically it is a field behind the Leisure Centre about 5 mins walk to the Leisure Centre (quite large )

It is a 15 mins walk to the Town Centre from camp site but there is normally a bus ferrying to and from regularly

Down hill walking back to the camp site at night if its nice

Events usually take place in and around the Town Hall site and pubs in easy walking distance, even the large curry house is used and food can be bought there too

The Whickham is usually used extensively for singarounds, boozing singing and accommodation and their Car Park is used for Dance displays which are great when the weather is good (usually is)

The Music Room (trad music show room) is being used for workshops too this is near the car park in the town centre which I believe is now free of charge!

Actually getting there can be difficult if no car and the bus service from Leeds or Bradford may be useful, but dont get on the horsedrawn one!!

Train to Leeds should be used probably (Scoobydoo)

Yes, tickets are on sale for individual concerts available, for all concerts except Sunday afternoon concert in the Town Hall. To see this concert you will need either a weekend pass or a Sunday day ticket, this will allow you to see the evening concert as well.

List to Britfolk to hear some of the guests who are appearing at the Festival, and also hear Geoff Pickles and Deanna Norman have to say about the festival.

See you there, hopefully.

Sad to report that Sue's Cancer Research 'Race4Life' event was called off due to water-logged conditions: it has now been re-scheduled to 22nd July (coinciding with Saddleworth Festival!).

My personal highlight was meeting up with Linda & Hazel again.

Hissyfit has landed. We really enjoyed ourselves. Thanks to all for a fun festival. The minibus driver was a star, the campsite wasn't too soggy to leave and clever Linda packed her tent first thing (before the rain). Thanks to Sue and Bob v G for the bacon and bagel breakfast before we drove off site in time for Church.
----We still don't know Lennys Mum! Where were you? ----
It was brill to see Eric and his son, down from Orkney!
Lovely to meet 'Craig, Morgan and Robson' at last. Never ending harmonies - wish we had more time. I'm playing the CD now!
After a couple of singarounds and fish & chips we saw Keith Donnelley and 'Cherish the Ladies' in the Town Hall.
"Laugh out loud" fun followed by the fastest flute and whistle fingers in town, Wow! Brilliant!
Cherish' all played at breakneck speed but the phenomenal dancer whose name escapes me was simply amazing to see...and Heidis' rendition of Dimming of the Day was a delight.
See you soon.
P.S. Padgett - have you got the 'War' sorted yet?

highlight for me was the Demon Barbers Roadshow on Sat. night as well as the last half of the evening with Hissyfit( lovely CD ) and Something nasty in the Woodshed. Unfortunately I had to come back on Sat evening for a dialysis session today. Already looking forward to the next one

CMR had a great time - although I am still recovering from fighting the French and Spaniards ...how many times was it? Never mind, worth it for the fantastic harmonies. Lovely to meet Hissyfit at last, and thanks for the CD - see, I'm not really horrible, just absent minded. Rather a grim journey home, as we got mixed up with lots of traffic from Sliverstone (I believe that is soemthing to do with cars...) Hope to bump into lots of old and new friends at Saltburn and Whitby, and I do hope that John Taylor and John Howson can get their weather from the same suppliers as Geoff and Jan Pickles.

I hope everyone who came to Clecky enjoyed themselves, and wasn't the weather marvelous.

Highlights? Hissyfit, Demon Barbers, Craig, Morgan, Robson and a new find - Keith Donnelly. Special mention to my favourites, Duncan McFarlane Band - the unplugged numbers while the PA guys sorted themselves out were much appreciated by the audience I'm sure. The guys (yes, I can actually say that this time!) were in fine form and rocked.

Roll on next year.

Well Lenny's Mum - You've got me guessing. The Aakash 'set' was a bit of a nervous blur, especially with the 'microphone man'....

Give me a clue...? When did we meet in the foyer? We went up and down those steps a number of times on Saturday and Sunday and met soooo many lovely people ... I'll see if I can work out who you and Lenny are! I'm not too good with puzzles!

It was a brill weekend for us. Linda's just given me our set list for Saddleworth so I'm off to rehearse.
See you soon.

Right then, Pistachio, I help organise the stewarding at Cleckheaton. I think it was Saturday afternoon when I spoke to you, before you went down to the Aakash. Although, your spot was cut short it was very good. Lenny, is only small, he's only 6 inches tall but I carry him every where with me. He is very useful though.

Hope this is a big enough clue.

Busy Bee Paul. Well done for winning the slow cooker. Apparently, we will be bringing it to Otley Festival for you to pick up. I understand by that, that you'll be there too. We will ring you from our mobile (Lenny - that's a clue for Pistachio)to arrange pick up. If you let me know if you are at any other festival that we are at too perhaps you can get it sooner. PM me.

Thanks for that, Lenny's mum, I suspect that Lenny is a constant cuddly companion, who I probably did notice, so I'll be on my guard to spot you at Saddleworth.
Do you camp? We hope to get there by 4pm...ish.
See you soon, Setting off in 1 week and 19 hours time!

Well done Linda. I hope I am who you think I am. Yes, we camp but in a caravan. We usually do not arrive at Saddleworth until fairly late Friday night, and then do stewarding duties on Saturday and Sunday. We will definitely see you around, and I'll let you meet Lenny.
