22 May 07 - 09:44 PM (#2058803) Subject: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: ranger1 Tomorrow (Wednesday the 23rd), I go for an interview for a year-round ranger job. It's technically a lateral transfer, but it's really a huge step up for me. Not only is it more or less my dream job, but it also comes with housing. This means no more scraping in the winter to pay the bills and possibly being able to save up for bigger and better things (like retirement in 30 years or a house). So, I will accept any and all well wishing done on my behalf. My interview is at 2:00 PM mudcat time. Did I mention I was nervous? |

23 May 07 - 05:59 AM (#2058857) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: GUEST Tami, You KNOW you can do the job!!!so that part is sewn up, convincing them may take a little bit longer but you can do it, remember YOU are interviewing THEM as much as they are interviewing you!!! You are trying to decide if YOu want to work with THEM also. I went for interview once for a job that I THOUGHT looked perfect for me,and on paper, it was. but the staff interviewing me revealed so much about the organisation and themselves as a bunch of A****oles that ,when offered it , I turned it down. My suggestion to you is, " be as relaxed as you can be",If necessary Pause and take a coupla deep breaths before answering a question, if you are uncertain about what they are asking, ASK them to explain what they want. Uf they give you the classic " what would you do if..." be prepared to say "Refer to my supervisor" or"Look it up in the Manual" NO one expects you to carry the complete" Rules and Regulations relating to interactions with the Public in Stae and National Parks 1978 in your head!! oh and(although I am sure it will play no part compared to your real skills and knowledge) Good Luck!!! |

I can't judge ranger job skills, but on personality and qualities one looks for when hiring, you're looking good. Good luck - I'll be cheering you on at 2. |

23 May 07 - 07:33 PM (#2059406) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: ranger1 WOW! Gotta love my Mudcat family! I think the interview went pretty well, considering I was nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, but I'm in that "Oh dear, I should have said x and maybe should have left out y and I forgot to ask z" kind of mode right now. It also depends a lot on who else interviewed. I think I have an edge on most of the rangers, but if there is a seasonal manager willing to take a demotion there won't be a whole lot I can do about it. I'll know by the end of the week one way or the other. Thanks, everyone! |

24 May 07 - 07:41 AM (#2059717) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: Bat Goddess I kept extremely positive thoughts beamed in your direction yesterday, Tami! (Well, not just yesterday!) That job has your name written all over it! And I hope you don't mind if I borrow your thread to ask for some good thoughts for myself -- I've got a Date With Destiny -- an interview for a job I really, really want -- at 5:30 this (Thursday) afternoon . (Right after what will probably be a day from hell at my current job.) Interviews for backup positions are in place, "just in case", but I really would like this one -- and I came highly recommended by a friend who was doing some consulting for the company. Interesting job, considerably less stress, more fun, more money, real holidays and days off without having to work unpaid hours to make up for them. The amazing thing is the company is located in the same position as the printing company I started working for almost 25 years ago. AND it's a shorter drive to work on a pleasant road. (And, as my friend the consultant pointed out, there are more interesting lunch places in Newmarket than there are in the town where she works.) Good thoughts and prayers welcomed! Linn |

By and by, you'll hear. No way now to worry yourself into - or out of - that job. Consciously and willingly...mindfully...be fully in the present moment, whatever and wherever that is. 26 May 07 - 07:52 PM (#2061552) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: Bat Goddess Waiting is a bitch. I've heard from the person who referred me that I shouldn't have to worry about being overqualified on the graphics end -- they're planning on needing more of that down the road, so I could very well be the perfect candidate (as she thinks I am). Now I'm waiting, too, for my cat Jazz-min to come home. She stayed out last night but wasn't at the door first thing this morning. Has been sighted across the road, though, unhurt, etc. And I heard from her previous person (her rescuer) that she has several times gone walkabout for two nights then come home when craving food from can or bag instead of on the hoof, so to speak. And Curmudgeon is awaiting the results of his second interview for a permanent (10 month, full time benefits) gig at the test factory. Waiting is a bitch!!! |

01 Jun 07 - 09:35 PM (#2066202) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: Janie Tami, How disappointed you must be. It really is true, however, that when one door closes, another one opens. Whatever you do, don't take it personally. The damned impersonal postcards are simply the way beaurocracies deal with these kinds of things. You will keep doing the excellent job I am sure you do during the summer months, gain more experience and confidence in yourself, and look for the opportunity that always presents itself when we are challenged by the refusal of something we really want. You are following your heart, pursuing your vocation, and paying your dues. Those dues are sometimes pretty steep, but, in my own experience, have been well worth the sacrifice one sometimes has to make to meet the payment. If it is 'safe' to do so, ask for feedback. (The safety issue is actually less for you than for those you are asking, i.e. do they feel 'safe' in providing honest feedback.) The feedback you are seeking is very specific and addresses two separate areas. If you can get honest answers (and are prepared to hear them), the information can be invaluable to you over time as you seek to make enough enough money pursuing your vocation to be able to continue to do it - to continue to be able to serve. 1. If I want to work full-time as a park ranger, what are the areas in terms of knowledge, skills, experience and expertise that I need to really focus on. Specifically, what areas in terms of skill, knowledge and development do I need to pay particular attention to? What would you suggest I do differently, or what is(are) the skillsets I still need to work toward to acquire What would have made you view me as a more viable candidate in those particular areas. What are the areas of development that I should focus on to acheive my goal of full-time work in the field that is my vocation. What did you see as my strengths? What are the areas of development I need to priortize? 2. WHat about the way I dealt with (condcted myself) during the actual interview. When you left that meeting, what general impression of me did you have. what was the message about me that has lingered? Too tired to finish. You get my drift. Learn. ((((hugs)))) Eyes and toes still crossed for you, Linn. janie janie. Janie 2. |

01 Jun 07 - 11:25 PM (#2066260) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: TRUBRIT Tami -- yes, exactly what Janie said.......ask WHY -- I always do if I am not picked to be someone's buyer broker or to get the listing........sometimes the feedback really helps (you seemed too busy for me , one person said - OUCH). GOOD LUCK Tami - your job is out there .....you will find it. |

Jerry is fine, it's the Bennies you have to watch out for! LTS |

02 Jun 07 - 05:59 AM (#2066389) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: jacqui.c So sorry Tami. The one silver lining for the rest of the Mainiacs is that we get to keep you in the Portland area for a while longer. I know that you can raise your own havoc but if you need someone to go break a few limbs (figuratively speaking) just let me know. Otherwise we'll do a bit of retail therapy next week. |

02 Jun 07 - 11:06 AM (#2066518) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: SINSULL Tami I am sorry that you didn't get the job but happy that you will still be here in southern Maine. As Janie suggested. Call the person who interviewed you and ask how you can improve your interview and what qualifications made the difference. Take notes. You have worked long and hard for that job. As far as I can see, they have made a mistake. NOW - I am not one to play the gender card lightly but if you do not get feedback that makes sense and you suspect you were actually better qualified than the candidate they selected, talk to Tom Coward about your options. Handled properly, next time you will be the candidate of choice. Mary |

He doesn't mudcat but I tell him interesting bits like this. I will PM you his phone number. I must be getting old and cynical but like Mary, that was just my first thought. How better qualified can you be than to have done the job for 20 + years. |

02 Jun 07 - 02:34 PM (#2066620) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: Becca72 Do we know for a fact that the job was given to a man? I think we're jumping to conclusions here, ladies. If it's true then kick the crap out of them...but make sure it's true first. |

02 Jun 07 - 02:38 PM (#2066624) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: TRUBRIT Of course -- that's a given........my concern would be - were I in Tami's shoes, with all that she brings to the table, what is missing..........? 02 Jun 07 - 02:48 PM (#2066632) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: Becca72 Not to drift too far off topic, but what if it did go to a man...with more experience? There are too many missing pieces. Were I Tami I would definitely call and ask them what the weak points were and learn from them. In the meantime, keep on truckin' Tami. You'll find something you just love, I'm sure of it. |

02 Jun 07 - 03:31 PM (#2066659) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: Bat Goddess Well, Tami (she says, trying to be philosophical), this means you'll be in better shape when the BETTER job comes along -- soon. Big cosmic hug (and another one in person, soon). There IS a year round, good paying gig out there for you. It will happen! As for me, I'm still waiting. Had a good interview for a different job last Tuesday -- wouldn't mind either of the jobs I've interviewed for in the past two weeks. Waiting -- and sending out more resumes. Tom's still waiting after having his second interview for the permanent position at the test factory. He's more qualified than anyone else who has applied for it. And we're both waiting (trying to be optimistic) about Jazz coming home. At least people are reading the "Lost Cat" posters -- got a phone message about a possible sighting. She's so friendly -- I think someonehas probably taken her in and won't know who her people are until they see a poster. Waiting. I go from wild optimism to bleak depression -- and back again. Right now I want to curl up in the fetal position and suck my thumb. (Or take a nap; I'm exhausted.) But I'll probably call a friend who worked for my current employer and fill her in on the latest. All I really want to do right now is give my notice before my birthday. Linn |

02 Jun 07 - 04:12 PM (#2066681) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: SINSULL Yes - it went to a man. I know nothing of his background, seniority or qualifications. He may well have been the best man for the job. If not, Tami has some rights here. |

02 Jun 07 - 11:12 PM (#2066896) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: TRUBRIT If it went to someone better qualified -- absolutely no issues from me.....it could go to a Martian is he/she/it were better qualified..........but I would just want to be totally sure......and I have been around long enough to remember back these 29 years when I was working in a bank in Indiana, going to school and carrying a 3.93 average and told that I shouldn't expect to get the management training position because that was 'obviously' going to my peer - a student some 6 years younger than me with a crappy GPA but -- ah ha -- a penis. If I am wrong, I am happy to stand totally corrected...... |

05 Jun 07 - 01:30 PM (#2069250) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: Bat Goddess Well, just found out they hired someone else for the position I interviewed for last week. But they're growing and said they may be needing another person sooner rather than later. (Encouraging, but I'm still hoping to give my notice before my birthday.) Still waiting, of course, for the other job that I really want -- when they interviewed me a week and a half ago, they were at the start of their interview process. 05 Jun 07 - 03:48 PM (#2069374) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: Bat Goddess Well, I just got the double whammy -- the other job I had really hoped for was filled by someone else. That's the one my friend the consultant highly recommended me for. I really just have to believe that I didn't get these two jobs because there's a much better one waiting for me...but I really, really want to be away from where I am and what I'm doing and desperately wanted to give my notice this week. Today is the last day of the production manager with whom I've been working with for the past four months -- he and I have been looking for about the same amount of time and were up for the same job a couple weeks ago. I couldn't accept the job because it was too much of a step back income-wise. He grabbed it (which shows what things are like here). Sigh. And though I've had an interview a week for the past three weeks, there's nothing scheduled this week or yet for next week... Encouragement would be appreciated. Linn |

24 Apr 08 - 07:16 PM (#2324793) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: ranger1 Official word arrived in the mail today in the form of the nicest rejection letter I've ever received. Truth be told, I wasn't sure I wanted the job in the first place and was pretty certain I didn't after the interview. Thus, it was with a bit of relief that I learned that a former co-worker who was a bit more qualified got the job. I learned unofficially that I was #2 in the running and that if Bryan had declined the job, it would have been offered to me. Bryan leaves a year-round job that I would love, but probably wouldn't get. I'm going for it as soon as it's posted anyway. So, glass is very much half full here. Thanks so much for all the well-wishing. |

23 May 08 - 01:53 PM (#2347763) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: ranger1 Well, it's over and done. I think it went well, just depends on who else applied. I know the other person on the interview team very well, he's the person who initially hired me 21 years ago. He once told me: "Brains are better than brawn, if you have the brains, you can find a way to do it without the brawn." It was a comfortable interview, the only real sticking point may be that I feel obligated to my current manager to finish up the school season, as he scheduled groups with the thought that he's have both of us available to do the programs. I did suggest that perhaps I could work mornings at Wolfe's Neck and then go to Bradbury for the rest of the day until schools are out. Anyway, it may be a moot point, but I did a pretty good job selling myself with the "Why do you think you are the best candidate for this job?" question. Thanks for all the good vibes sent out and received. I'll let you know as soon as I find out anything. |

03 Jun 08 - 07:25 AM (#2356035) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: ranger1 OK, I'm a tad calmer today. This, my Mudcat friends, is a dream come true. This has been what I have wanted and worked for since I was 18, and it took me 21 years, but I finally got it. Bradbury Mountain is a beautiful park of a hair under 1000 acres, has about 20 miles of multi-use trails (hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding in the summer and skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the winter) and a small campground. The job is very physical, as Fritz pointed out several times. I believe that he pointed this out to all the applicants and interview-ees. He's been without a ranger for over a month, so he's understandably concerned with making sure he doesn't hire someone who will wimp out when the going gets tough. He's also relatively new at that park, having transferred down from Aroostook County in Northern Maine three months ago and has had very little transition time. I think we're going to mesh well, however. I also think the edge that I had over the other candidates was previous experience at that park. Granted, it was about 400 acres smaller at that time, but I am familiar with most of it and have a good rapport with the locals. It's pretty much the same distance for me to drive as Wolfe's Neck was. I'll miss Wolfe's Neck, I think it's the crown jewel of the Maine State Park system and I worked with an awesome crew there, but this is such a great move for me and I will get to do much more maintenance, which I really enjoy. |

(Beats the hell out of machines facing a TV, eh?) Here's a huge cosmic hug which will have to make do until I see you. Linn |

04 Jun 08 - 06:34 PM (#2357640) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts appreciated From: ranger1 Maeve, it was a pleasure to have you visit. And thanks for posting that link. That's the "official" one from the State website. It hasn't been updated in forever, the park is now almost 400 acres bigger, the trail system has doubled, and the campground now has showers. For a better website, check this one out. This one was built for the park by a volunteer, and it's much nicer. I will keep people updated on how things are going, still trying to figure out when I can start at Bradbury without screwing things up at Wolfe's Neck too badly. |

We have visited many times since then -- it is a gem. |
