Kathryn Tickell on Woman's Hour

Kathryn Tickell (she's a Northumbrian piper for those a bit too American to know) is currently being interviewed by Jenni Murray on Woman's Hour and playing tracks from Instrumental.

It will be on the replayer for a week.

And we now have stereophonic threads, all the better for picking out Julian Sutton's fantastic box playing.

Interesting - we had Norma and ELiza two weeks ago, now Kathryn Tickell.

At this rate Woman's Hour will be playing more music to my personal taste than Mike Harding (in fact I think they may be just in front already).

In the past year or so, Woman's Hour has featured the music of, and very perceptive interviews with, The Witches Of Elswick, Winterset, Mariza, Athena Andreadis and Karine Polwart. There are surely others I have missed. And it's not ghettoised but presented as 'these are women succeeding out there at being musicians'. As, indeed, the C5 documentary of Kathryn Tickell's work was, though it was a tad devalued by the inclusion of Sting as token popstar to grab the viewer's attention.

The Woman's Hour interviews are not even faintly patronising and Jenni Murray allows her interviewees to make their points. Vastly different from the supposedly dedicated show on R2 where you might imagine this should be happening, but doesn't.

I wasn't able to listen to the programme live (so to speak), but one of my colleagues heard it while travelling between meetings.

He was so impressed, he commented on it to me, really, really interested in the Northumbrian pipes. Now, this is a person who normally says that he doesn't think very much about folk music. Just goes to show what we have always said is true, when people are introduced to quality, they appreciated it.

Katherine Tickell appeared, and very effectively, on Sting's Fields Of Gold, I have no problem with Sting nor with Katherine Tickell appearing with him. Some peoples minds shouldn't be allowed to wander...they're too small to be out on their own...

The artist's name is Kathryn and it might be, at the very minimum, polite to note that before making a wholly irrelevant comment.

You may well like Mr Sumner's rendition of Fields of Gold, in which case you are free to sod off and listen to it.

Under discussion here is Ms Tickell's broadcast this morning with her trio which included her brother Peter, and Julian Sutton.

Do stick to the point.

I am aware ..very aware Of Kathryn Tickell...and her band, and its members. She has collaborated with many in her musical career and will continue to do so, I'm sure. This broadcast was an excellent one for those who maybe are not familiar with her work, and therefore serves as a good introduction. One may hope that a few may go out and purchase Ms Tickell's work and then pass on the message to others.
My first post still stands....

Countess,

That was the most incredibly rude response to a perfectly reasonable comment.

It was you that questioned Sting's appearance on a programme relating to Kathryn Tickell. Guest Gubbins perfectly reasonably sought to explain it - that she had appeared on one of Sting's albums (as it happens she was involved in two of his albums AFAIK).

Why did you have to be so thoroughly nasty in your response? It wasn't necessary.

23 May 07 - 06:45 PM (#2059378)
Subject: RE: Kathryn Tickell on Woman's Hour
From: The Borchester Echo

Yes it was.

Kathryn Tickell's appearance on Woman's Hour was presented perfectly straight as 'here is a musician who happens to be a woman who is making it out there'.

The C5 documentary, on the other hand, although otherwise excellent, had Gordon Sumner tacked on as a 'famous addition from the same region you are more likely to have heard of'. Had Tootler and Gubbins watched it (and it's been transmited twice) they would surely be aware of the controversy arising from this skewed presentation at the time. Kathryn Tickell's music can stand alone without being patronisingly hooked on to a fading popstar.

I haven't a clue who this Guest Gubbins is, but sodding off somewhere else to listen to The Police would seem to be preferable to hanging about here to make fatuous and inaccurate comments.

Being male or female doesn't make a scrap of difference to me, a good musician is a good musician regardless, and Kathryn Tickell is a great musician, both venues, the Womans Hour programme and the C5 documentary were both excellent.

Relevance?
You lambasted poor Mr. Gubbins in your post of 05:17 for spelling her name wrong. You got the relationship wrong. That's all.

The spelling of her name obviously matters, for the enlightenment of anyone wishing to seek further information about Kathryn Tickell's music.

Details of her personal life are wholly irrelevant.

Poor Mr Gubbins? He's just an irritating troll, best ignored when possible.

I listened to "weekend womans's hour" and was very impressed by the interview with Janine Roebuck, who has become a top opera singer despite being profoundly deaf.

I knew here when she was a teenager, and in our youth theatre group, have followed her career ever since, but had not realised her deafness was so profound,

Don't wish to upset my friend the Countess, but Mr Sumner has written some very good songs   "We work the black seam" can stand beside the best of contemporary writing, as can "Fields of gold"...Ake

Yes, I know, Ake. Mr Sumner has written some OK songs.
Why I haven't mentioned them is the same reason why I haven't talked about what the various contestants did on Joseph tonight.
The topic is the Kathryn Tickell Trio on Woman's Hour.
It's written above every post.
It's very odd how some people forget when it's oh so simple.
You want to talk about somebody who used to be in the Police, or a hearing-impaired opera singer?
Start another thread.

To whoever it was that objected to my spelling out exacly who Ms Tickell is and which instrument she plays:

We in England are constantly being reminded that this is a US site and harangued for not clarifying our 'quaint little anglicisms'.

So, Kathryn Tickell lives twixt Tyne and Tweed (these are rivers) and plays the smallpipes which are squeezed, not blown).

Radio 4 is the permanent daytime audio wallpaper in our house..

I was in the lav.. but came downstairs just in time to hear
the pipes filling up with air..

i love bagpipes of any sort

brilliant.. until the irritating superfluous rythm guitar started

poncifying away up front & loud in the mix..

my mrs said it was nice but she would have prefered if someone started singing a song

cuz it all sounded like an elongated intro to her ears..

oh well.. if i had the ££$ i would be first in the queue to beg Kathryn Tickell
to lay down some tracks on my next immaginary LP

Ian Stephenson's guitar was way, way down in the mix.
So much so that when Woman's Hour was going out live and I was doing something else I thought he hadn't turned up in the studio and omitted to mention him in the line-up of artists. (Sorry Ian!)
Listening to it again now on the replayer I'm picking out a gentle guitar line like a trickling of the burn water the piece represents, weaving in and out of the rushing torrents of the pipes, fiddle and melodeon.
It would be very hard to lay a vocal line over it as the timing is so complex, to represent the fluctuating, bubbling burn, and extremely difficult to sing. I'd hesitate to try it!

and my mrs is a tone deaf celtic kareoke singer..

different sensitivities & senibilities i guess..!!??

dammit i'd traids evry guitar in my collection
[except that one special early 80's punk metal monster]
to be able to play pipes as well..

oh.. i do love bagpipes

Obviously where she lives is relevant, indeed vital.
The music she composes and plays is informed by the landscape which surrounds her
The tune Hareshaw Burn describes the flow of an actual tributary of the North Tyne.
If she lived somewhere else her music would be different.

Belatedly (look at the date) why all the fuss? Why all the nastiness? Miss Tickell's music is not my music of choice, but she is an astonishing and skilful player of the Northumbrian pipes, and her work is always worth listening to and enjoying. I heard her interviewed by Woman's hour way back and thought "She'll go far!". She has!!

Why? Because she is successful of course.

Remember, this site is full of geriatric ex hippies who see that as "selling out".
