There are surely others I have missed. And it's not ghettoised but presented as 'these are women succeeding out there at being musicians'. As, indeed, the C5 documentary of Kathryn Tickell's work was, though it was a tad devalued by the inclusion of Sting as token popstar to grab the viewer's attention. The Woman's Hour interviews are not even faintly patronising and Jenni Murray allows her interviewees to make their points. Vastly different from the supposedly dedicated show on R2 where you might imagine this should be happening, but doesn't. |

He was so impressed, he commented on it to me, really, really interested in the Northumbrian pipes. Now, this is a person who normally says that he doesn't think very much about folk music. Just goes to show what we have always said is true, when people are introduced to quality, they appreciated it. |

It was you that questioned Sting's appearance on a programme relating to Kathryn Tickell. Guest Gubbins perfectly reasonably sought to explain it - that she had appeared on one of Sting's albums (as it happens she was involved in two of his albums AFAIK). Why did you have to be so thoroughly nasty in your response? It wasn't necessary. |

Kathryn Tickell's appearance on Woman's Hour was presented perfectly straight as 'here is a musician who happens to be a woman who is making it out there'. The C5 documentary, on the other hand, although otherwise excellent, had Gordon Sumner tacked on as a 'famous addition from the same region you are more likely to have heard of'. Had Tootler and Gubbins watched it (and it's been transmited twice) they would surely be aware of the controversy arising from this skewed presentation at the time. Kathryn Tickell's music can stand alone without being patronisingly hooked on to a fading popstar. I haven't a clue who this Guest Gubbins is, but sodding off somewhere else to listen to The Police would seem to be preferable to hanging about here to make fatuous and inaccurate comments. |

I was in the lav.. but came downstairs just in time to hear the pipes filling up with air.. i love bagpipes of any sort brilliant.. until the irritating superfluous rythm guitar started poncifying away up front & loud in the mix.. my mrs said it was nice but she would have prefered if someone started singing a song cuz it all sounded like an elongated intro to her ears.. oh well.. if i had the ££$ i would be first in the queue to beg Kathryn Tickell to lay down some tracks on my next immaginary LP |

So much so that when Woman's Hour was going out live and I was doing something else I thought he hadn't turned up in the studio and omitted to mention him in the line-up of artists. (Sorry Ian!) Listening to it again now on the replayer I'm picking out a gentle guitar line like a trickling of the burn water the piece represents, weaving in and out of the rushing torrents of the pipes, fiddle and melodeon. It would be very hard to lay a vocal line over it as the timing is so complex, to represent the fluctuating, bubbling burn, and extremely difficult to sing. I'd hesitate to try it! |
