I gather in addition to those playing (some very good names there) over 30 bands and known performers have already asked to play and been turned down (programme overcrowded). THe standard of some of those playing was enough to convince me that I should NOT even ask for a slot. But it will be a nice drunken weekend anyway. |

If this Volvoproblem is not Volvosolved in time I will either be no-showing or arriving in borrowed car with no towbar and therefore under canvas so I hope it don't rain! Some may remember that part of the way through last year, I graduated from a Skoda Felicia 1600 as tow-var to a Volvo 745 16 valve, of which I am ridiculously fond. Late last summer she started using water, and the sniffer (a gadget you put in the expansion tank to detect products of combustion that ought not to be there) said it was not head gasket (ie said no products of combustion in water) but as water level dropped she would get hot - not into the red, but hot. Eventually it did turn out to be the head gasket and with a few extra bits at the same time I got a bill for 700 quid. Picked her up - thought she was going like a scalded cat - after 7 miles, cloud of blue smoke, still ran smooth, even, perfect, but not as much wellie. Pre-Gasket I was getting 35-ish mpg on a run and top speed well over 130. Post-Blue-Smoke about 25 mpg and top speed barely 120. Next event, I had clutch done (I knew it was due) and it turned out to need slave and master cylinders as well, plus 90,000 mile service, and some sundries (and a new second-hand viscous fan coupling) - £808. Got her back Thursday. Saturday first real drive in her, many defects, clutch too low, drive-train vibration, nasty vibration (also felt like drive train) over 5,000 RPM, fan fouling cowling slightly, mirror not properly secure, wheel/tyre swap not done as specified, wheel centre cap left insecure and fell off somewhere, performance not significantly improved. Sunday morning flapping about (pre-ShinyBums) doing odd things like shopping, and then rolling into my drive on the way home, lambda light comes on. Reverse into parking space. Once parked notice temp guage into red. Lift bonnet, loads of steam, carefully undo expansion tank lid, no pressure and no sign of water. Busy for rest of Sunday. Monday morning, go to see if I can fill with water and then what - it's ****ing out like a tap between the water pump and the block (same garage changed water pump gaskets not long ago to try to cure water usage before we decided it was head gasket) and the water pump is about a quarter of an inch clear of the block! I think the order of problems is clear - loose water pump, slides down with vibration, fan starts to clout cowling, extra vibration shakes water pump right loose, loss of water, overheating, head gasket again (I bet it will be because of the overheating) leads to lambda light on. As a result of overheating, I could also be up for mains, ends, pistons rings and rebore! And probably skim head and re-seat valves on reassembly. First stop shout at garage and tell them to fix it at their expense, totally. We have now agreed disposition. I wanted a new water pump anyway, so I will pay for one, but they fit free. I source and they fit new fan and fan boss and viscous coupling). We go halves on them re-doing head gasket and planing the head, and since this is the time to do it I will pay for new hydraulic tappets which is no extra labour. We think the bottom end and bores will be OK. But will it be ready by Friday 3 pm? Meanwhile, in Birmingham is a man with another Volvo, the 2.8 litre V6, auto, allegedly nice, no tax and MoT but fit to pass (280 miles since last MoT!) with towbar. So probably tomorow I will take the train to Birmingham, he will meet me, I will part with money (not a lot, close to weekend beer money sort of amounts). It's legal to drive directly to a pre-booked MoT. Without MoT, and indeed without Tax. I've checked with both police and DVLA. So before I go I book an MoT at my local garage. Pick up car, drive her there, walk to house. What about insurance? Well, my insurance gives me legal cover for a car not belonging to me nad not hired to me under a contract of hire purchase etc. So when I collect the car I do a bit of paper that says I don't OWN her until the next day. Will she MoT on Friday Morning? If so then I can tax her using the new owner slip - and arrive later at the White Horse. If not, fling tent into borrwed car and prepare to be soggy (and be like a bear in the woods overnight while the pub loos are locked)! Anyone got a better story? |

Also true, 300 miles in the last 18 months! 179,000 since 1987, but what's that to a Volvo? 5 Alloys - different on each side of the car (I haven't checked the spare yet), all on 14 inch wheels, I thought the 1987 760s were on 15 inch - albeit the assorted tyres seem virtually brand new. Rust hole left rear passenger footwell. Wet front footwells, can't trace source yet. Carpets more like Peter Bellamy wetland than Wilton, and a strong smell of funghi once heater warmed up! Wet storage space right hand rear - no trace of rot (or source). Back door catch (Dean did tell me about this). Dodgy ignition block. Start it, then turn key back a fraction or various electrical bits (including the headlights) don't work. Temp guage U/S. Numerous dash lights not working, some warning lights intermittent. Very tappetty. Definitely slower than my 16valver, and it should be 15 bhp quicker. I can get 110, and I think I might get 115. My 16-valver I could originally get 130 and gaining, although after the head gasket was done, only about 125. A/C pump belt is not correctly round tensioners, A/C not tested. Radio Cassette been removed. Smooth up to 55. Then steadily increasing vibration that gets almost uncontrollable when flat out. I can put the figures in here, but the VOlvo site censors me if I do. I suspect prop shaft. Engine coarse over 5,000 rpm. 2 exhaust blows round centre box. Brakes pull left. Rear wiper doesn't. Heated rear screen seems to be ditto (but thank Christ not Beth Ditto). Ding L/H rear sill. Slight rust bottom of RH rear door. Little ding in chrome R/H rear window. Electric seat adjustment not working. Toolbox (R/H rear) missing. Interior cover for L/H rear light broken. Leather a bit more in need of hide food than the pix on ebay showed (but not too bad). Headlights crap. I wonder if reflectors poor. But body generally quite remarkable for 20 years old. Something is not perfectly true round L/H headlight. Engine runs OK (but not great) and oil in good condition. Auto box seems fine and oil in good condition. Taxing her will be fun too, once the MoT can be obtained, because she is disabled class taxation so the tax class will need changing. Chances of an MoT by 3 pm Friday to go off with caravan - about NIL. I have not re-filled after filling in brummagem, but estimating from the petrol gauge I'm thinking about 17 mpgs without a van on the back!! Worth the £160 I paid? Maybe. |

Rather too much pop masquerading as folk. And the restaurant prices in the pub were eye-watering! The new Capella/Richardson unaccompanied harmony band is fairly awesome, if a bit ecclesiastical in the way the harmonies fit together. The Amazing Mr Smith is still as amazing as ever. It was such a good festival. Yes the meals in the pub were a tad expensive but the beer/cider was great and the whole thing was very friendly. Perhaps there was a lot of rocky stuff, but we stayed on the campsite when that was on. We spent the evenings at the singarounds. |
