Req: Hidden track song from Christy Moore box set

30 May 07 - 11:24 PM (#2064594)
Subject: Lyr Req: Hidden track song from Christy Moore
From: PeadarOfPortsmouth

On Christy Moore's box set, Yellow Disc, there is a song hidden at the end of track 16. The chorus includes the lines: "Sound as a bell/He'll work like hell/Hire him if you can".

I can't find a match to these lyrics online, but it's a fun song that I'd like to play around with. Anyone familiar with it and/or it's origins?

Thanx

That's a tough one, Peadar. The main song on the cut is Quiet Desperation, which lasts the usual three minutes or so. Then there's applause and a bit of silence, and then this song begins. I can catch patches of it that are very clever, but I can't quite get the gist of the whole song.

I'm sure it's based on this one (click):

God Woman
(Christy Moore)

Dm   Am   Dm   Am

          Dm                      F                            Am
She spent seven days creating the World, the Sun, the Moon and Stars
             Dm                         Am
And the Plough and the Milky-Way and Jupiter and Mars
       Dm                               F                   Am
And she opened her ribcage. Then she pulled out a little man.
       Dm                                                      Am
She put him down on the plains of Kildare and the human race began

F                            Am
Go forth said she and multiply God man and I will by God.
       Dm                                  F                   Am
What better place to begin the race than below in the yellow Bog*

CHORUS

       Dm         Am         Dm    F   Am
God Woman, God Woman, God Woman, God Woman

   Dm                            F            Am
Down by the edge of Clongorey he built a holy cell
            Dm                              Am
Where he knelt to contemplate heaven and drink from St. Brigids well.
       Dm                                    F                Am
And then he went to the mission fields of Raheens and Ballitore
          Dm                                    Am
And he sailed on down the Grand Canal to the town of Lollymore.
      F                                        Am
Where he went breaking up the Bordellos, and smashing the poitín stills.
      Dm                      F                Am
Introducing the word of God around the furry hills

CHORUS

* The place was in fact Bowlings Gog at Barrongstown, Miltown,
Newbridge, County Kildare

That chorus
    Sound as a bell
    He'll work like hell
    Hire him if you can
appears several times.

Let's see what I can dig out.

She spent seven days creatin' the world, the sun and the moon and stars.
The Plough and the Milky Way, then Jupiter and Mars
Then she opened up her ribcage and pulled out a little man
Let him out near (timmerhout??), that's where it all began.

That's the way she did the shark-grass (?), God only knows
Life began for the little man without a stitch of clothes.
Go forth said she and multiply God man and I will by God.
What better place to start the race than below in the Dowlin's (?) Bog

CHORUS:
Don't you know, he's a hole to go (?)
Once he gets his foot out from the door.
Sound as a bell
He'll work like hell
Hire him if you can
Yer telly's grade and you'll never .... mortal man????

At the edge of Clangford's (?) garden he built a lovely cell
Where contemplated Limbo, then Purgatory and Hell.
With the barbed wire in his underpants he found it hard to sleep.
All he had for company was jockey boys (?) and sheep.

When he confessed to Warfield that England lie at all
He set sail out of the Grand Canal to the town of Lollymore.
Where he broke up the bordellos and he smashed the poteen stills
Useful humble trinked .... sandy hills

CHORUS:
Don't you know, he's a hole to go (?)
Once he gets his foot out from the door.
Sound as a bell
He'll work like hell
Hire him if you can
I hear tell he's great and you'll never meet a more devoted (?) man.

Way back in the sixties when the world was fresh and new
And the east and west were neck and next to be first on the moon.
It was him that steered the spaceship down on the moon to land
Who was there to hold the ladder, but the portimony (?) man.

He opened up the Klondike and blazed the Yukon Trail,
Crushed grapes in California before Columbus had set sail
He drank tea on top of Everest before Hillary was born
....art fest and baxter corona horn

CHORUS:
Don't you know, he's a hole to go (?)
Once he gets his foot out from the door.
He's Sound as a bell
He'll work like hell
Hire him if you can
I hear tell he's great and you'll never meet a more devoted (?) man.

[mouth music]

[repeat chorus]

Whew! That was tough, and I did a horrible job of it.

OMG, Joe, what an incredible effort! I was listening to it in the car last night and started to break the words down in my head, and thought before I spent time transcribing it that maybe someone here knew it...so I posted the query before going to bed. I never dreamt you'd jump on the transcription while I slept! I just woke up and I'm literally stunned at this moment.

I'll spend some more time with it and if I can clarify any of the outstanding work you've already done, I'll let you know.

Thank you again...Thank you.

Hi, Peadar - as you can see, some of the lines I transcribed make no sense at all, so we really need help. I added "box set" to the thread titles to see if that might catch the attention of others who have the box set.

It's the Bórd Na Móna Man - Bórd na Móna is ther Irish turf board. Set up as an Irish state agency set up to manage the harvesting of Peat from Irish Bogs.

I'll be back with the lyrics in a while.

From: Declan

Ok this is my best effort - I'm not 100% sure of some of the placenames the ones I recognize are in Kildare, Laois and Offally locations for Bord na Mona bogs. A briquette is a machine shaped piece of turf used to light fires in peoples grates - before we all got central heating.

The Bord na Mona Man (Christy Moore)

She spent seven days creatin' the world, and the sun and moon and stars.
The Plough and the Milky Way, then Jupiter and Mars
And then she opened up her ribcage, pulled out a little man
Let him out near Timahoe, that's where it all began.

As to why she picked the short grass, God only knows
Life began for the little man without a stitch of clothes.
Go forth said she and multiply God ma'm and I will begob.
What better place to start the race than below Bagowlin(?)'s Bog

CHORUS:
Don't you know, he's a whore (pr. hoor) to go
Once he gets his foot half in the door.
Sound as a bell
He'll work like hell
Hire him if you can
I hear tell he's great and you'll never beat (pr bate)
The Bord na Mona Man

At the edge of Tankred's garden he built a lovely cell
Where contemplated Limbo, then Purgatory and Hell.
With the barbed wire in his underpants he found it hard to sleep.
All he had for company was jockey boys and sheep.

When he converted Moorfield, Raheens and Ballytore
He set sail out the Grand Canal 'til he came to Lullymore.
Where he broke up the bordellos and he smashed the poteen stills
introduced the humble briquette (pr to rhyme with cricket) around the sandy hills

Don't you know, he's a whore to go
Once he gets his foot half in the door.
Sound as a bell
He'll work like hell
Hire him if you can
I hear tell he's great and you'll never beat
The Bord na Mona Man

Way back in the sixties when the world was facin' ruin
And the east and west were neck and neck to be first on the moon.
Buzz Aldrin steered the spaceship down on the moon to land
Who was there to hold the ladder, but the Bord na Mona man.

He opened up the Klondike and blazed the Yukon Trail,
Crushed grapes in California before Columbus had set sail
He drank tea on top of Everest before Hillary was born
Blindfold around the north face, and backstroke around the Horn

Don't you know, he's a whore to go
Once he gets his foot half in the door.
Sound as a bell
He'll work like hell
Hire him if you can
I hear tell he's great and you'll never beat
The Bord na Mona Man

[mouth music]

Lilting the reel The Sally Gardens
[repeat chorus]

The tunbe of the song is used for "The Westmeath Bachelor" and probably lots of other songs.

God Woman title
Graffiti tongue Album 1996

There are a number of hidden tracks in The Box Set Me Bollix Collection. The song you ask about is "The Bord Na Mona Man". It never saw the light of day and some of the lyrics formed the basis of a later song "God Woman" which is on the Graffiti Tongue Album of 1997.

God Woman
This is a response to the difficulty I have with the deity always being
lumbered with gender. We've always been told that God is Him and I just
don't accept that. I'm saying that just for a day let God be a she. For me
God is an It, but that would be offensive. So today let it be God WOMAN.
Maybe it'll cause somebody to think.

Just noticed the reference to Bowling's Gog which may be a local placename - Dowing's Bog makes more sense to me.

By the way Christy is a native of Moorfield, Newbridge, Co Kildare.
