Wanted: Banjo teacher in Philadelphia

A fellow I know who is 75 wants to learn how to play banjo, go figure. Ha! Anyways, he says he has a tenor and has too much spare time on his hands. Can someone suggest anyone in the Phili area that could help get him going on some lessons? Thanks. Tom

I can't recommend a tenor banjo teacher, but with Philadelphia being home to the Mummers String Bands which feature tenor banjos, there have to be a bunch of them available. There is also a considerable Irish string band community which also has a strong tenor banjo presence...

He might be interested in old timey frailing style too. That's done on a 4 string banjo, right? Any folk societies down that way?

Frailing would be done on a 5 string banjo, generally. And for that, Matt Brown in West Chester would be a good choice. You can find his contact information here.
