Over the last couple of weeks I've seen cars with registration plates from the 70's and 80's, Morgans, MG's, Triumphs, all in quite good condition. Am I noticing them because I also drive an oldie (1974 Range Rover). So, what do you drive and how old is it - who has the oldest car on the Mudcat? Any takers? |

I have a Reliant Scimitar GTE 1972 owned for 26 years, used regularly and coming up for some tidying up shortly including a respray . Also have a 1970 Morris Minor restored and converted from a saloon to a convertable (tourer as they were called)by me about 15 years ago. In a former life this car was a Bristol police car (Panda car as they were called in those days). Also have a 1968 Reliant Scimitar GT (Coupe)3litre version (only 600 made) totally dismantled for restoration. |

My Rangie had a private plate when I bought it, I sold the plate to pay for some repairs and was surprised to find I could have it registered with its original plate. It's in perfect nick except for the tail gate which is being replaced soon. It tows my horses trailer all over the place and never lets me down. Oh, how about motor bikes any really old ones out there? |

Over 200,000 miles. 3rd engine and third transmission. It has the big V-8, a 4 barrel carburaetor, and a 36 gallon gas tank. It gets only 9 MPG when the ac is running and it runs on only super premium gas. The other side of the coin; no car payments except to the mechanic. A new one with a toilet would cost me $70,000 which I do not have. SOL |

But neither was useful in town nor in the extreme north of Oz. In town and on the highway between Steiglitz and the various capitals where I sang and played the '68 Corolla was the go. In the Territory you could wait for weeks for Landrover spare parts while Landcruisers were like buttocks; everyone had two. I still have the '78 FJ40 from Oenpelli, but it only gets used for heavy haulage; the '88 Subaru wagon is the main transport and has been for 450,000 km. Cheers, Rowan |

Then again this morning on the journey to work some kind of sports car quite old, the age of the black and chrome numberplate. Couldnt see what it was I was going round an island at the time. Can cars have ghosts, am I the only person seeing them. ????? Oh yes, and my husband has a 1970's Zetor Tractor. Lets include everything and find the oldest vehicle on the Mudcat. |

If I'm not mistaken the first Ford flathead V-8 came out in '32, which I believe was after the A models... As fir the Capt'n's A model, I'm sure he would know that it was completely original seein' as he bought it new off the showroom floor... Awwww, jus funnin' wid ya, Capt'n... We all know you ain't a day over 39... Danged!!! I forgot that I also have a '63 Chev ramp truck (car carrier)... It ain't running right now and may never run again with me as an owner seein' as I got a 454 cu.in. outta a old motor home and put it in the ramp truck and ran into a little problem with the clutch shaft and the 454 exhaust manifold both wanting to occupy the same space and, well, haven't had much time to get back to it, especially now that I know I'm gonna have to go with a set of headers (yuck) so the slutch shaft will have it's own space... Or was it a Plymouth Valiant,,,yes, and it's name was Prince Valiant. Everything made sense when you lifted the hood you could tell what everything was. You could get to the oil filter with out scraping your knuckles, and it was so dependable. the Lug nuts tightened in opposite directions, depending on which side (driver, passenger) of the car they were on...i guess it was engineered that way so that the wheels would always be tightening as they drove, i bet a lot of folks (or foolks) learned that the hard way by trying to loosen the nuts by turning the wrong way til they snapped....but what a machine! |

I think they are systematically doing away with them. They are crushing older cars so parts are getting impossible to find...you CAN work on older vehicles...I don't think "they" like that...newer ones you're pretty much at the mercy of a mechanic, or you have to be a contortionist & have special equipment to get AT the parts. Soon all us poorer folks will be walking...good for writing folk songs though! (walkin' down that long lonesome road don't cha know) |

There's a 1977 MG-B rotting away in the back yard that would love to be fixed up if anyone is so inclined (it starts and recently had a carbuerator rebuild, but the interior and rag-top are present in spirit rather than in fact). Will sell it cheaply. I also know where you can get a 1937 LaSalle in need of some TLC if the MG isn't a big enough challenge. |

My memoirs show that we broke more than 40 sets of buttons in the process of demonstrating that the Chrysler proposal was "less than optimum" for adoption by the Army. Although I did manage to break an axle off mine, my testing was less severe than the Marine Corps crew at San Diego, who sank theirs in ~60 feet of water in San Diego harbor, while swimming it around. The crew at Ft. Knox reportedly lost more than a couple of weeks when theirs was mired in the mud and eventually required an M88 to get it out. Not exactly a happy experiment for Chrysler, although it was a real fun sportster for cruising around the desert. John |

It was also easy enough to work on my own. But handy, I remember going to a lumberyard and putting in a couple of sheets of 4x8 plywood. Just as I was going to put it in the guy at the lumber yard chuckled and said.. theres no way that youll fit those in.. After I easily put them in, he said thats a handy little car. In Czechoslovakia, our first car was a used little fiat 600.. (it took years of saving to get a car).. We did a lot of touring when I was a kid, and sometimes stopped by a lake or pond and used the water to wash the car.. This proved to be a bad idea in Yugoslavia, when we stopped by the ocean (for the first time) and decided to wash the car. after that my dad had a hard time opening the doors.. He ended up giving it away to the family that we stayed with in Rijeka. |
