BS: How are the wabes where you live?

Subject: BS: How are the wabes where you live?
From: Bee-dubya-ell

Like most folks, I experience an occasional desire to do a bit of gyring and gimbling. But when the urge to gyre and gimble strikes, I have to get in the car and drive for an hour to the nearest wabe. Then, when I finally get there, it's usually so crowded with slithy toves that I wonder why I bothered. It's a small wabe, and pretty trashed out by all the gyrers and gimblers who can't be bothered to clean up after themselves. There's a big pile of rusty vorpal swords under the Tumtum tree. It's so depressing that even the borogoves aren't usually very mimsy. Heck, the last time I was there I didn't even see a mome rath, much less one that was actually outgrabing.

Is this just a local phenomenon, or are wabes on the decline everywhere? How far do you have to go when you get the urge to gyre and gimble? I hear that wabes are so common in some areas that unsuspected people fall into them and are unable to start gyring and gimbling quickly enough to get out. What's it like where you live?

There are quite a few unspoiled wabes here, but there are also bandersnatch. So if you want some wild g&g it's wise to set a guard, preferably someone you can do without. Of course, if you're afraid you can use one of the municipal wabes or one of the ones that have been commercially developed.

But you won't shout "Callou! Callay!" and chortle very much.

Actually, I was well on the way to establishing a wabe on the vacant property adjoining my own a few years back. (It's easier to not actually have the wabe on one's own property. Permits, licenses and all that, you know.) Then one of those pesky hurricanes we have around here blew down all the Tumtum trees on that acreage. They're starting to grow back, but it'll be years before one of them is big enough to use in a wabe.

We're just cleaning up after a large storm which had high whiffling winds and very large wabes. The boats had to do a lot of gyre and gimbling, and some of them were not quite successful - beached tanker. Gives you food for uffish thought!

A lot of the tum tum trees were blown down and the flooded creeks and rivers are still doing a lot of burbling. The jabberwocks and jub jub birds are hiding in the borogroves, which are still very manxome and not very mimsy, but the mome raths are becoming outgrabe again.

I am chortling in my joy now because it's over. It's a brillig frabjous day. Calloo Callay!

Ya know, Mr. Carroll didn't exactly tell us what the plural for "wabe" might be. I guessed it would be "wabes", but it could be "wabia" for all I know.

"Wabia" is the name of their homeland, their auld sod, their Vaterland. This should not be confused with "Swabia" which is the home country of sailors.

BWL = Those are some pretty uffish thoughts you posted. With the tum-tum tress all blown down, could you establish your wabe in some tulgy woods? I've found them to be a great place for whiffling. Sometimes I go there to burble, too. And galumphing.

If the woods are very tulgy, it's good to have some galumphs to go galumphing in. Keeps your feet dry.

Yeah, that's part of the problem out here: bandersnatches hang around the "wild" wabes, and even worse are the boojums. We had a bellman softly and silently vanish away just yesterday at the wabe upon Kinport Peak.

Der Jammerwoch

Es brillig war. Die schlichte Toven
Wirrten und wimmelten in Waben;
Und aller-mümsige Burggoven
Die mohmen Räth' ausgraben

Bewahre doc vor Jammerwoch!
Die Zähne knirschen, Krallen kratzen!
Bewahr' vor Jubjub--Vogel, vor
Frumiösen Banderschnätzchen!

Er griff sein vorpals Schwertchen zu,
Er suchte lang das manscham' Ding;
Dann, stehend unten Tumtum Baum,
Er an-zu-denken-fing.

Als stand er tief in Andacht auf,
Des Jammerwochen's Augen-feuer
Durch tulgen Wald mit wiffek kam
Ein burbelnd uhgeheuer!

Eins, Zwei! Eins, Zwei! Und durch und durch
Sein vorpals Schwert zerschnifer-schnück,
Da blieb es todt! Er, Kopf in Hand,
Geläumfig zog zurück.

Und schlugst Du ja den Jammerwoch?
Umarme mich, mien Böhm' sches Kind!
O Freuden-Tag! O Halloo-Schlag!
Er chortelt froh-gesinnt.

Es brillig war, &c.

Jabberwocheux
Henri Parisot

Il était reveneure; les slictueux toves
Sur l'allouinde gyraient et vriblaient;
Tout flivoreux vaguaient les borogoves;

«Tu as tué le Jabberwoc!
Dans mes bras, mon fils rayonnois!
O jour frableux! callouh! calloc!»
Le vieux glouffait de joie.

Il était reveneure; les slictueux toves
Sur l'allouinde gyraient et vriblaient;
Tout flivoreux vaguaient les borogoves;
Les verchons fourgus bourniflaient.

Il Ciarlestrone
Adriana Crespi

Era brillosto, e gli alacridi tossi
succhiellavano scabbi nel pantúle:
Méstili eran tutti i paparossi,
e strombavan musando i tartarocchi.

«Attento al Ciarlestrone, figlio mio!
Fauci che azzannano, fauci che ti artigliano,
attento all'uccel Giuggio e attento ancora
Al fumibondo chiappabana!

yes...it goes on & on...
EVERYONE gotta have a wabe!

Afferò quello la sua vorpi da lama
a lungo il manson nemico cercò...
Cosí sostò presso l'albero Touton
e riflettendo alquanto dimorò.

E mentre il bellico pensier si trattenea,
il Ciarlestrone con occhiali brage
venne sifflando nella fulgida selva,
sbollentando nella sua avanzata.

Un, due! Un, due! E dentro e dentro
scattò saettante la vorpida lama!
Ei lo lasciò cadavere, e col capo
Se ne venne al ritorno galumpando.

«E hai tu ucciso il Ciarlestrone?
Fra le mie braccia, o raggioso fanciullo!
O giorno fragoroso, Callò, Callài!»
stripetò quello dala gioia.

Era brillosto, e gli alacridi tossi
succhiellavano scabbi nel pantúle:
Méstili eran tutti i paparossi,
e strombavan musando i tartarocchi.

Years ago, an Australian group called Tursacan SANG Jabberwocky - to a tune they made up. It was kinda - unusual. I've got it on a CD somewhere but can't find a link to it. However I did find a suggestion by Dick Greenhaus in another thread that you could sing it to Beethoven's Ode To Joy. Pretty mimsy, eh!

I don't get it. How can a translation of a work in which the original author used made-up words, words which really have no meaning, not include those words pretty verbatim? Sure, some alterations are necessary due to structural elements and rules of grammar. "Toves" translates to "Toven" in German because that's what the plural form would be if "Tove" was a real German word. But what the hell's a "tove"? Who knows? One can tell from the context that it's a noun, probably a life-form of some sort, but the reader must use his imagination to decide what it means. So, since it's an imaginary conceit with no established meaning, how can it be "translated" into another word all together? Some of the "translations" above don't use any of the words Carroll coined. If those words are eliminated, how can the translation even be said to be the same poem?

JABBERWOCKY

o brillig de Twas do `, e os toves slithy fizeram
o gyre e gimble no wabe:
Toda mimsy eram os borogoves,
e o outgrabe dos raths do mome.

"beware o Jabberwock, meu filho!
As maxilas que mordem, as garras que travam!
Beware o pássaro de Jubjub,
e shun o Bandersnatch frumious!"

"e, mil slain o Jabberwock?
Vindo a meus braços, meu menino do beamish!
Dia frabjous de O!
Callooh! Callay!"
Chortled em sua alegria.

o brillig de Twas do `, e os toves slithy fizeram

Slithy = lithe and slimey (according the Dodgson himself)
Gyre = See Yeats, "...the widening gyre..."
Gimbel = a mounting for compasses, etc. which keeps them level

And Tolkien adapted a pre-existing word, "orc", a variant of "orca", as a name for his race of evil creatures in The Lord of the Rings. That doesn't mean a translator should insert his language's term for "killer whale" every time the English text says "orc". He should call them "orcs" because, though the word may not be new, the meaning is. I sincerely doubt Mr. Carroll intended for us to interpret "mome rath" as " the mother of a fortified farm".

We had all the songs from the Alice books sung on a 78 when I was little. I still remember the tunes. The one for "Jabberwocky" (in solfa, drmfsltD) went

s.m.r.d.m.s.D.s..
sf.f.l.l.s.f.m..
sm.r.d.m.s.D.s..
sl.l.t.s.D.....

It should be noted that most of the words are explained by a more authoritative source than either Rapaire or Carroll, viz. Humpty Dumpty himself. A mome rath, IIRC, is a green pig that has lost its way.

Good Lord, you mean you don't believe me? I am crushed beneath the iron heel of disbelief! Woe indeed is the world, when a font of knowledge such as myself is told...well, I just don't know what this world is coming to! I swan!

"'And "the wabe" is the grass-plot round a sundial, I suppose?' said Alice, surprised at her own ingenuity.

'Of course it is. It's called "wabe," you know, because it goes a long way before it, and a long way behind it-----'

'And a long way beyond it on each side,' Alice added. "

"'And what does "outgrabe" mean?'

'Well, "outgrabing" is something between bellowing and whistling, with a kind of sneeze in the middle; however you'll hear it done, maybe - down in the wood yonder - and, when you've once heard it, you'll be quite content."

And are "raths" the source of the green ham in "Green Eggs and Ham"?

Just to note that with care and grace notes, you can sing it to Sidhe Beg Sidhe Mor

Gadzooks! GUEST A Wandering Minstrel is correct! If I ever lose my mind and decide to actually sing "Jabberwocky" in public, "Sidhe Beg Sidhe Mor" will definitely be the tune I will use! Then again, maybe not.

I'm going to sing it to the tune of The Marine Corps Hymn. One makes as much sense as the other.
