SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) -- After a lifetime of brutal treatment, including walking on burning embers, Bulgaria's last three dancing bears will get to rest their paws at a mountain sanctuary, in an apparent end to the centuries-old performance tradition in the Balkans.

Activists on Friday bought the freedom of Mima, 8, Misho, 19, and Svetla, 17.

Sometimes...in some places...good things happen. The whole AP story is

Now THAT is a sensible way to do it - provide the keepers with a suitable "grant" to set up another business, rather than just ripping the livelihood from under them. If only other laws were enforced with such planning and foresight.

They did something like that in Africa once, gave the local tribe 'ownership' of the local wildlife. With sensible leadership and a business plan, they farmed out the hunting to high bidders and maintained the stock.
Poachers ended up on a string in the gift shop. Heh Heh.

Haven't heard anything about it lately, like 10 years lately. Has anyone?

Poacher on a string....this is a familiar line....or was that puppet?

Seriously, good for the bears!!!! Now, for these grizzlies eating hikers near their cabins.....can we feed them Shrubs??????

Go for it, Sorcha. Bears are omnivores, although some Shrubs might make them gag.

Bears in captivity have always had a very harsh time. Strangely enough something prompted me to think about it all recently and I felt so sad. This is good news and it's great to hear it. I just hope all three live long enough in a happy place to "compensate" for all the misery.

That's a great story Peace, thank you. I need something like that now and again to counter my rising tide of Cynicism.

Well, I just had my chance to have my very own tame bear- and I blew it. A few minutes ago I was here at the computer with the door behind me wide open - it's gorgeous out - when a shadow fell within. I looked up and my first thought was that a black dog had entered my apartment.

It was a bear- maybe three years old- looking scruffy and hungry. I stood up and reached for my walking stick just as my Cairn dashed forward outraged beyond belief. The bear took a swipe at her so I swung the stick and rattled on the furniture as I advanced. He backed out and my dog chased him. He went over the fence and up a tree.

A moment later I went outside again because Meggie was getting hoarse with her carryings on. The bear had descended and was standing on the other side of the board fence as though undecided as to where to go or what to do. I felt like bringing him some food - which I would NEVER do - he looked so lost and poorly.

Then a police officer came on the deck above the back yard - he said the bear had gotten in a garage down the hill and someone had called the PD.

Anyway, he is gone and I wish him well- just not in my house.
