23 Jun 07 - 08:06 PM (#2085190) Subject: BS: Britain's greatest comedian not dead! From: Steve Shaw I had to endure that ghastly professional Yorkshireman, Parky, for over half an hour tonight (and Jonathan "Mr Big Ego" Miller didn't help) in order to catch about ten minutes of Doddy, surely the greatest living comedian. Had Tommy Cooper still been with us I might have been umming and ahh-ing about that, but in my view, as things stand, Ken Dodd has no peers. Forget the grim, unfunny and negative rubbish that emanated from the fat ugly one whose passing we've all recently not really mourned. Here's a chap of the ten-a-minute guffaws, the king of the one-liner and, above all, a warm-hearted human being who could get a giggle out of the most curmudgeonly miseryguts you could think of. Hats off to Doddy. Is he ever going to be Sir Ken, or do the Inland Revenue have a say in that? ;-) |

Doddy has had his moments though, if you tried to repeat his early material now, it wouldn't all stand up to scrutiny, but I have to agree, on the whole, he was a damned funny man. How tickled he'd be to see this thread! LTS |

From: Dave Hanson In his live show the first thing he would tell the audience was, ' cancel your taxis ' I hate his politics, but he made me laugh a lot. Hard to choose between Doddy and Tommy Cooper as Britains greatest. eric |

24 Jun 07 - 07:22 AM (#2085464) Subject: RE: BS: Britain's greatest comedian not dead! From: Liz the Squeak I think Tommy was for the much more mature audience. Although children did get a kick out of seeing everything go wrong, they didn't get most of the wordplay - 'a man walked into a bar... ouch. It was an iron bar' would have gone over the heads of many (and still does) but Doddy covered the whole age range. I saw a video of one of his live adult shows which included Dicky Mint (or was it Mick the Marmeliser?) and that had content in it that was definately not for children who would have recognised Mick or Dicky straight away. From: Nigel Parsons As his hit record said: "Happiness, happiness, the greatest gift that I posses I thank the Lord I've been blessed With more than my share of happiness" Of course, as a mondegreen the words would go right over some peoples heads. This song is not recommended for cockney singers! CHEERS Nigel |

From: goatfell Go to the Bernard Manning thread as see the ones that mourned his passing, anyway less of that I don't want to be invovled with that rubbish, I just don't like everybody that generalize everything. Any back to Ken 'I don't pay tax' Dodd, I like him as well he's funny and like BM he could sing as well. The number one hit when I was born was Tears, that just shows you that God has a sense of humour. |
