24 Jun 07 - 03:06 PM (#2085777) Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Alaska Mike The article refers to endangered species protection. It requires sporran wearers to apply for and carry a license proving that the fur used to make their sporran was either not on the list of protected species or was killed lawfully prior to 1994. Seems resonable to me. Mine is made of cow hide. Mmmmoooooooo. Mike |

These delightful creatures are in danger of being hunted to extinction. Strict quotas are in force and the license is to prove that the it came from a legal catch. |

28 Jun 07 - 09:29 AM (#2089027) Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Rapparee Does this law mean that if I have a sporran made from, say, farm-raised American bison, I'd need a license to wear it in Scotland? I assume that bison are rarely found in Scotland or England. What about black bear or mountain lion? Or muskox? Could I set up a business importing farm-raised elk sporrans into Scotland? How about sporrans made from a bull's scrotum? Inquiring minds want to know these things! |

28 Jun 07 - 09:35 AM (#2089039) Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: John MacKenzie That's more of a ball bag than a sporran Rapaire. I have a certificate that I got with my Akubra hat, which certifies the leather hat band is made from farmed crocodile's skin. This is in order that I may pass through customs without them giving me a hard time with regard to CITES regs. Giok |

28 Jun 07 - 09:41 AM (#2089047) Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Rapparee So if I go up into the hills and kill a black bear -- legally -- and I make a sporran out of the pelt, how do I get to wear the sporran in Scotland? (Druther use beaver, because the fur's much softer and far less coarse. Cause less irritation.) Not that I plan to do so...I'm much more the rabbit hunting type. You can get hurt hunting bears, moreso if you hunt bears bare. |
