Robbie McMahon was with the Nenagh Singers Circle last Friday Night. What a night - He was brilliant. Now for all you catters who are interested. Robbie recorded a tape a few years ago entitiled The Black Sheep. It was recorded a little before CD's became the rage here in Ireland which was probably some two or three years after every where else. Anyway, his tape contains the original version of Spancil Hill. If you want ot obtain a copy write to him at Spancil Hill enclosing $15, or send me $15 and an address and I will obtain it from Robbie and forward by mail. Robbie simply gets better every time I hear him. George |

But what I got along with that song was 17 other great songs as well. I would highly recommend this tape if you like unaccompanied, Irish singing. Thanks George and Robbie and Mudcat - without Mudcat I probably would never have heard about the tape. Now, if I could just get a hold of a copy of the Irish magazine with Frank McGrath's Spancil Hill article that would be great. karen k |

It is a wonderful tape that I have damn near worn out. I may just have to order another because it is just about as fine an example of unaccompanied Irish singing that you could possibly own. Clare would be delivered to him. However his actual address is Robbie McMahon, Spancil Hill Co. Clare. Exchange rates had altered considerably since 1999 and I suggest you send him $20 to cover his costs of psotage etc. You can mention my name if you wish but it is not necessary. This man is one of natures gentlemen and will forward your tape the same day he gets your dollars. As one might imagine, I have been wearing it out listening to it on my cassette player in my car, which is what I do when I don't have time to actually play music. Great singing, as good in english as I've ever heard and about the best lilting , period. robbie included a letter which I will probably frame. Here's an excerpt: "...it was Michael Consodine who wrote the song. he was born in 1850 and went to Boston in 1870 (and)worked there for about a year and a half made some money went to California went to High School and got a good job, then got into bad health and he knew he wasn't going to make it because more of his family and his mother died before him. So he wrote the song in poem form and sent it home to his six year old nephew John Consodine. 'Twas from John I got the song. He was about 75 years then and I was about 17 or 18 years. he never came home and was buried in California at the age of 23." The liner notes say that Michael worked as an accountant and that he (Robbie) frequently walked to mass with John Consodine. Brían |
