Chord Req: Drowned Lovers

Could anyone tell me the chords for this song as played by Nic Jones on Penguin Eggs.

Neil,

Nic Jones used lots of open tunings - he does for this song.

If you just want something to strum along to in normal tuning, the following should be a fair approximation:

[F] Willie sits in his [Bb] stable door
And he's [F] combing his [Bb] coal black [F] steed
And he's doubting on fair [Bb] Margaret's love
And his [F] heart [C] began to [F] bleed
"Give corn unto my [Bb] horse, mother
And [F] meat to my man [C] John
And [F] I'll away to fair [Bb] Margaret's bower
[F] Before the [Bb] night [C] comes [F] on"

It's easier with a capo at the 3rd fret, using the chords D, G and A.

Let me know if you need any more information.

Ed

Kate Rusby learned this song from a Nic Jones record; he adapted it from a set published by Walter Scott, which is also in the thread MMario linked to.  She also recorded a song which she called The Drowned Lovers; this she also learned from a Nic Jones record.  There is a transcription made from Kate's record here:  The Drowned Lovers  and an older, traditional version here:  THE MOTHER'S MALISON (Clyde's Water)

Can anyone help me with some (simple) chords for this? also, if anyone can explain what "turled low on the pin" means?

Drowned Lovers/Clyde Water Child #216.

Turling on the pin means ringing the doorbell.

Which version? I think Nic Jones' version only uses three or so chords. Granted he's doing it in an alternate tuning, with embellishments. But I think you can get it down to fairly simple chord progression. There's a variant that Martin Carthy does for his version (titled "Clyde Waters"),which you can also get down to three chords. Don't have time at this juncture to figure them out.

well thanks to both... would still like those (simple) chords though! I have been trying to figure them out, and I am but a simple man, alternative tunings, drop tunings, etc, are all on another planet from mine!

Tune to C modal C G C G C D
Standard C chord, up 2 frets to a D/G and play around.
Haven't tried but something like that.

I'm using the think method here, not using my guitar:
   D                  G             D                   G
Wille stands at his stable door, combing his milkwhite steed
    D                G                D          G       A
He's doubted on May Margaret's love and his heart began to bleed.
   D             G               D       G       A
Give corn to my horse, Mother and meat to my man John
   D       G       D                D         G    A D
And I'll away to margaret's bower before that she lies down.

The chords may not line up when this is translated, but I tried. Good luck. I picked D as an arbitrary key.

Annan Water is a different song.

"turled low on the pin" I take to mean "gently rang the door bell", but I could be wrong.

Cheers,

Drowned Lovers is the same song as CLYDE Water.
Already said 'turling on the pin' is ringing the doorbell at 0343 above.

Ah, I see two threads have been combined.
Glad to see that somebody from 8 years ago concurs about capo at the 3rd fret . . .

Anyone ever figure out a more complete Nic Jones version of the song and care to post? I like the modal tuning + playing around with a standard fingering for c and will try that.

The American version names the 2 main characters as Running Bear & Little White Dove, though I pefere the Voice Squad's rendering of Annan Water better.

There are (at least) two wonderful versions of Drowned Lovers/Clyde Water by Nic Jones - the Penguin Eggs track with concertina etc is great, but much darker is the solo version on Game Set Match which as far as I can tell uses open C tuning (CGCGCC). Trouble is I can't play anything else using this tuning, so I try to play using drop D (with capo on 2) - you can get some of the impact of the latter version without the hassle and audience (ie friends) irritation factor of extensive retuning.

Can anyone advise the tuning AND the fingering for this tune as per the Game Set and Match version? I love it so much, and I've knocked myself out trying to hit the spot with it!

You can do it in DADGAD too, with the capo on 3 (sounds in F). It's not identical to Nic's version, but I quite like it.

Just to note that version I recorded from him in 1973 is close to the Game Set and Match version - I don't know the date for that version. He clearly rethought the accompaniment before recording Penguin eggs (1980).

And according to the album notes from 'Unearthed', his wife didn't approve of the reworking!

C/G/F/C/
C/G/C/G/
C/G/CF/C/

"Turl" revealed very little, apart from people asking this question, but then I found this at merriam-webster.com - thank you.

Definition of tirl

chiefly Scotland

intransitive verb

to make a rattling sound (as with a door latch)

Makes sense, and with the Scottish connection too, this seems to be the answer.
