Waterson Carthy, Wilsons, Strawhead, Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman, Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher, Jez Lowe, Muldoon's Picnic, Scolds Bridle, Hissyfit, Bryony - to mention just a few!!! And we'll have a Festival CD on sale to celebrate - with local artists on, besides the big names (the ones I've already mentioned plus Eric Bogle, Show of Hands, John Tams, John Wright, Roy Bailey, Kerfuffle and Clive Gregson). It's a double CD for just £10, so not too bad I think? Please come along and help me celebrate my last year - I'll be the one crying into my Jamieson's!!! Ali |

It's half way between Oldham and Huddersfield, on the Pennines - very beautiful area. And the weekend is July 20th - 22nd. You definitely didn't come to the festival in the mid 80's Lynne - I've been involved since the 1st one, which was in 1998. Vin2 - you'll have to speak to some of the committee over the weekend. Most other festivals with any cred do, and (I hear reliably) this does little if anything to the detriment of programme sales. I always buy a programme, whether I already have the content of the all-important "middle pages" in advance or not. Yes Keith is absolutely right, most folkies will buy a programme to support the festival and as a souvenir, also to get all that extra information such as maps, local adverts and biog details that don't appear on the website in most cases. The big bonus point though is that folks can make plans based on more accurate programme information from the website, they can be sure of coming on the right day/evening to see specific artistes or participate in a specific workshop or singaround (how infuriating are the sites that just say "plus workshops, singarounds, sessions" then when you arrive you've just missed one...). If I'm travelling a longer distance, I really do need to know whether planning to arrive in a strange town at - say - midday on the Saturday will mean I miss a vital event or whether the local streets would be closed for a parade etc etc. And on a Friday, whether events start up from midday or from 7 pm... But probably most important, the festivals concerned end up getting more revenue from those folks who are pre-informed, who will then come and enjoy with confidence and then next year perhaps decide to buy a whole weekend ticket because they were so impressed with the festival and its user-friendly publicity and attitude this year... So - go for it, Alio! |

What I mean by that is that concert goers and the FRINGE are all fully catered for. Too many festivals for my liking exclude 'The Fringe' and will provide camping for only season/weekend ticket holders only. This festival is different in that it is open house to everyone. You can camp for the whole festival for just £10.00 or pay £5.00 per person per night wether you are are ticket holder or not. To me this is the correct diplomacy that all festivals should adopt. I do believe that a true and proper festival should cater for all tastes and not exclude (as so many do, 'the fringe') If you have been to this festival before you will know that the fringe in terms of sing-arounds and musician sessionns is par- excellence in the local pubs (especially in the waggon and horses (I think it is called that!) and what great sessions we have had there. (please correct me if i have got this venue wrong) Anyway, enjoy this festival to the full. You will not be dissapointed. I promise. |

Shrewsbury for instance has a bus to take people into town for fringe events - and Warwick usually has a double decker. Both only offer camping for season ticket holders. One charges extra for camping - the other doesn't. I am sure both would provide cheap camping had they got space but they don't and haven't ever in my experience at Warwick. I have been to three festivals this year so far and only one had space for non-season ticket holders, (but wouldn't have had they sold more tickets of any kind), and one in particular once the festival got under way the campsite was - to all intents and purposes - as full as a chip, despite its size. Some festivals and I can think of at least two - don't offer camping of any sort. Others, like Shrewsbury, charge extra for it. To describe one festival as "correct diplomacy that all festival should adopt " when some festivals can't do this whether they want to or not - and to say I do believe that a true and proper festival should cater for all tastes and not exclude (as so many do, 'the fringe') seems narrow-minded to me when you are claiming to be all-inclusive. I'm doing the PRS stuff as we speak (unfortunately!!) it was the Saddleworth Summer Show which was cancelled - they use the same ground as we do for the campsite. But I've been down there today, and it's fine for camping - drying out nicely. It gets wet very quickly but dries out even quicker, thank goodness. Sessions in the Conservative Club, Waggon, Hare and Hounds, and Granby Mr Happy. Is that OK? There are events in the Commercial too, but I'm not sure if there'll be any sessions going on downstairs there or not. Then on the Sunday night the Survivors Session is in Greenfield Conservative Club cos the room is so much bigger than the Cross Keys, the beer's cheaper, and the landlord's much friendlier!And we've got 2 good sized rooms - the main one for the singaround, and the smaller one for the musicians session. We'll see if it works better than previous years in terms of comfort for everyone - at least you'll all get a seat! Next question? Ali |

I just keep getting this nagging premonition of Raggys' beard getting caught up and all entangled in the said string vest and him having forever to mumble into his belly button. It's a bit scary I know but I can't get rid of this image and it's giving me sleepless nights! |

The Wedenesday night is still in the Cross Keys. If you have ever been to Saddleworth FF you would know that this is a must-do festival and the same true converts to this festival turn up year after year no matter what the weather threatens. They are a truly happy and brilliant set of people and their number keeps growing every year. The concert and workshop scene is buzzing with rich talent and the singarounds and musician sessions are some of the best I have ever come across. I usually mainly frequent 'The Fringe' element of the festival (sorry organisers!)and I had considered Staithes folk weekend because it sounds reight down my street and I'm sure I would love it. If fact I've considered it more than once and even mentioned it to other folkie friends but their reply has always been "Sounds good but it clashes with Saddleworth!" Saddleworth AND Staithes are two of my favourite places on this planet, but Saddleworth will always win out (and it's only a half hour drive for me over the pennines to Yorkshires' lost but never forgotten little garden of Eden) It's a shame and a regret that both festivals are on the same weekend. I know it is very difficult to avoid clashing with other popular festivals over the summer (what summer? I hear you say) but I am sure that if there was some flexibility to move the Staithes event to some other weekend you would get lots of the Saddleworth folk 'fringe' fraternity going to it. I for one would be up like a shot. I sincerely wish both festivals every success and hope that they will both continue to prosper and grow in the years ahead. Chris P.S What exactly did you mean Tim when you said in an earlier comment on this thread "I do believe that it is more traditional to make yer own entertainment so that is what loads of us will be doing while you lot are slumming it and being pampered ....enjoy your commercial merry making..??" That's not very nice is it? It seems that the difference between Saddleworth FF goers and Staithes goers is that whilst we are polite, good natured and welcoming, Staithes representatives are inpolite, bad mannered and slag off other festivals because they can't get anyone to come to theirs. Saddleworth FF over-flows with people making their own entertainment in the pubs and clubs because it has such a robust and very large 'fringe' following which is fully supported,encouraged and accomodated by the festival organisers and hostelries. IN other words it is an all-inclusive festival that caters for every taste and inclination so eveyone is happy. So it is obvious from what you have said that you have never been to this festival and know absolutely nothing about it I would be suprised, Tim the Twangler, if you were an official and acceptable spokesperson for the Staithes festival because,quite frankly, your comments and your attitude actually does this festival more harm than good. You are a poor and, I'm sure, unwelcomed 'representative' of this festival who would do well to shut up and keep your own counsel. If however, you really do 'represent' Staithes folk weekend and speak on behalf of other like-minded people,then do you know what?, I would'nt touch it with a barge pole. The moral of this tale therefore is...there is NO CONTEST folks...get yourselves to The Saddleworth Folk Festival THIS COMING WEEKEND and have yourselves a great time. |

Geoff's opened it up today and would have told us if there were any problems. it's easy getting from the campsite into Uppermill - only 200 yards approx.. Friday starts off with a concert, a singaround and a session, all around 7.30. There's usually a singaround in the Waggon on Thursday as well. Had inadvertant midnight roll in the en suite mudbath on Fri night, still digging congealed soil from me glasses frames - lucky 'twas dark or would've made a spectacle of meself! Could'nt find me tent in the dark & only lights to be seen was the loo block - so ended up spending the night on the floor of mens chaning room - hard - but nice & wqarm & DRY! LUXURY!! Rest've weakend sessions in the pubs great - met lots 'catters- talented lot aren't we! Ray Padgett, Muppet & many others had us all in stitches with their most entertaining renditions, & very memorably Sooz's contributions in Con Club last night. Good place that - big enough for both the massed folkers [did I spell that right?] & also the small but intimate sinaround in the little members bar [no I'd not been peeking!] Even heard the most fascinating version of 'Danny Boy' from one've the locals with the words & tune of 'Old King Cole' [naughty Boys Brigade version]!! Can't weight for next time!! |

What a weekend................ Didn't think Saddleworth could get any better but the 10th certainly stood out as the best yet for me. The Saturday concert in the Museum was superb except that the midges certainly had a good supper - many thanks to whomever invented anti-histamines. bUT BACK TO THE HIGHLIGHTS Hissyfit continue to delight with both material and harmonies (I'm so jealous girls) Scold Bridle, Stanley Accrington, Muldoons Picnic, Jez Lowe, Bryony , Bill and Dave .... in fact everybody - I was not disappointed by one single performer I even heard good reports of the ones that I missed. I wanted it to be a huge singers festival, and it certainly was. The Wilsons told me on Sunday morning that they've never known a concert as easy as the one in the Civic on Saturday night - they only had to sing a couple of words, and every time this wall of sound came back at them! Ray - thank you so much for your lovely words to me at the Survivors Session. And what a wonderful session it was! It took nearly 3 1/2 hours to get through all the singers. The Greenfield locals couldn't believe it! Rolling Home was just amazing, wasn't it? So thank you to you all - artists, stewards, friends, festival goers. You're all just wonderful! I know the festival will carry on from strength to strength with the people who come every year - many of this year's Saddleworth "virgins" have said that they're coming back again. (Yes, we still have them over here!!) I jjust wish I'd seen Mr Happy and Linda (Hissyfit) get stuck in the mud - that would have just made my weekend perfect! Especially the thought of Colin K lifting Linda out!! Hazel - don't foget to send me the photo! I'll see you all soon - maybe in Saltburn and definitely at Fylde. Fortunately it didn't sink further as the weekend progressed. Linda was not so lucky. The rain didn't dampen spirits - it just left a tide mark on everything! Wellies are wonderful... So are disposable gloves! (They save ruining a good manicure when pulling up tent pegs) What a wonderful weekend we had. Thanks Paddleworth! The lovely comments above are very kind. Linda and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We didn't win the war but we enjoyed the battle. Good to hear Bruce's clever monologues, I'll have to wait to hear him sing. It was great to hear Dave F and Bill W at their 'extended' session in the Commercial on Sunday(!!) and the Wilsons were 'new' to me. Wow,how many different harmonies? Thanks Ali, for asking us to sing and for guiding us to Greenfield last night. It was brill. I loved it when Pete (Shellback) sang his Pirate song and cried with laughter at his variation of Gaudete! Impeccable timing. I sang myself hoarse with all the choruses but that's not a complaint. It was an amazing night with a room full of happy voices. It was a great privilege to share a weekend that's so special. I'm tired. I need to rest mind and voice. Great to put 'mudcat' names to faces and catch up with everyone again. H x.x.x Goodnight. |

My woefully inadequate footwear which was rescued by Col K (my hero) from the mudbath, have been consigned to the bin -the trench foot is healing nicely but i think the tent is terminal. Alio, this year was spectacular Wilsons-wow! wonderful sets from Bill W and Dave F and Jez -only sorry I couldn't catch more and the singing in concerts in pub on the campsite -well it was mighty! Was a bit tentative this year as me mate Jim, who normally came along sadly died in an accident recently but the atmosphere and friendliness of the festival helped tremendously. Sat'day night in the Civic was amazing; after each guest spot you kinda thought, 'wow, follow that' but each act was truly brill climaxing with the fab Waterson / Carthy even without the great Norma (hope you're feeling lots better). The survivors night as Linda said, was tremendous; what an end standing up and joining hands 'as we went rolling home'. I think the only criticism i heard was that the early acts on Sat eve didn't have long enough which to me shows the quality on show, such that people didn't want to let em go. Great tribute to the organisers! Well done and thanks very much Ali for a smashing time (sure we'll see you around next year) and all the committee for the hard slog througout the year. The running track was a godsend but the least said about the toilets the better. Weather not withstanding we had a great time. With such a great line up I rarely left the main concert hall, except to go to a couple of "meet the artist" & a couple of workshops. (My friends Chris & Siobhan Nelson doing "Appalation Clogging & "Home Recording" respectivly). Everybody on Sat was really good & it was terrific to see The New Scorpion Band on Sun. Unfortunately the program didn't allow me to get to see Hissyfit this year. Looking forward to next year. Cheers Les |

A couple of gripes The MC (who shall remain nameless) was pathetic he let the first two/three acts run over so we we ended up with just FOUR songs from Bill Whaley and and Dave Fletcher! Mind you they were four wonderful songs. He did however have the bottle to tell the Wilsons they were loosing a song! OK pathetic, but brave. These small niggles however never spoiled what is without doubt one of the friendliest Folk Festivals around. Well done Saddleworth AND we won the war of the roses.....Let my joy be unconfined |

Just thought we'd better mention, in response to the previous posting, that the first few acts on Saturday night didn't overrun... what happened was that some acts later in the concert were cut short for some reason, even though everything had been running ahead of time (according to the artists' schedule, anyway) until then! We were the first act on, and the set we played was exactly the length it was supposed to be. We were amazed, and very disappointed, when Bill Whaley and and Dave Fletcher didn't get their allotted time... weren't they brilliant, though! ..and we agree, the audience were great! (I mean destressed of course - not cold!!) We're not sure what went wrong with the concert on Saturday - I know Dave (the MC) was really trying to do a good job. Anyway, it didn't seem to detract from everyone's enjoyment - a lot of people are saying that it's the best lineup they'd ever seen - not bad for a small-ish festival!!
