Hi

Does anyone know anything about Farmstead? all I know was that they were an 'amateur band from the Yorkshire Dales' and they released 'The Sheep and The Hay' on a private pressing in 1977.

Be interested who they were and any more info anyone has

Thanks

According to my oracle Google, only 500 copies of this were released on Fellside FE005. One of the band members was Vere Foster,(fiddle, mandolin, and guitar) who went on to other groups afterwards. There is a track from it on current Fellside compilation Seasons, Ceremonies and Rituals, FTSR5, so perhaps the sleeve notes have more info. I did find link to a download of the original LP but not sure of the legality of this so you will have to google it yourself!

That's certainly more than I found via Google - many thanks. I knew about the 500 ;) but not much more. I've search Vere Foster and I'm getting somewhere now.

Cheers

I've just dug out my copy of The Sheep and the Hay ......

Farmstead are listed as ....

Vere Foster
Robert Dugdale
Lucy Rawlingson
Russell Jackson
Kevin Downham
Bill Noble

The recording was made in April 1977, only 30 years ago, so they should still be around.

The sleeve gives further info (it does help to read things thoroughly) .....

" The members of Farmstead live in and around the small Yorkshire town of Bentham"

I heard one of their tracks played on a late lamented North Yorkshire radio show this past year.

(The song was just lovely--one of those radio-listening moments that made me just listen, and then want to buy the CD... until I learned that it was an old old record; this song had the same tune as a song on Mike Tickell's Warksburn).

It may have been "The Song of the Yorkshire Dales" which was a poem by F W Moorman set to the tune of "Come all ye tramps and hawker lads"

actually HighBbentham

band was named after the jug player's (the sadly now late Bill Noble) cottage next door to the butcher on the high streeet.
