05 Jul 07 - 05:18 PM (#2095047) Subject: Recording records (LP's) From: nutty I've looked at record decks for converting my LP collection for a number of months and at last decided to splash out on a Steepletone machine. I'm delighted with the item I ordered ... its so neat and SO functional. It plays records of 33, 45,and 78 rpm and converts them to digital MP3 format either directly to the computer or MP3 player or to an SD card. It is also a radio and cassette player. It arrived this afternoon, took 10 mins to set up and I've been playing with it for the past couple of hours. The tone of the speakers is brilliant as well . I never knew my LP's sounded so good. Teac makes two units, AM/FM stereo, record player and CD play/record., They are pricey at retails of $400. & $600. US. Still not sure I want to spend that much. Too bad I can't find a good CD record deck anymore. |

24 Sep 07 - 06:27 AM (#2156161) Subject: RE: Recording records (LP's) From: The Fooles Troupe I have sen similar machines here in Australia (imported) - most of the 3 speed ones I have seen do NOT have a changeable needle - they only have the microgroove one, and not the wider one needed for 78 rpm playback. You will get a sound, but the needle is riding on the base of the groove, not on the sides, so you will lose most of the correct sound. |

Considerably cheaper than the price I payed a few months ago. I don't regret it however cos its a super little machine. An EXTREMELY GOOD TURNTABLE seems to do away with most of the hisses and scratches. You can obtain new needles and spe3cial ones for playing 78's. from the manufacturers. It will digitally record directly onto MP3 players or onto a memory card for transfer to PC. If you are willing to spend a little time seperating the tracks manually (stop and start recording after each track) you can drop individual tracks direct to CD without having to use another program. eg Audacity. which also comes as patr of the package. As a bonus the machine is also a CD player and a DAB radio. |

25 Sep 07 - 01:41 AM (#2156852) Subject: RE: Recording records (LP's) From: johnross I have recently gotten a record washing machine (a VPI 16.5), and I am just astonished how much difference it makes in eliminating background noise on my records. The VPI is pricey (~$500), but you can accomplish much of the same thing by hand, with a brush and a blend of distilled water, dishwashing liquid (like Dawn or Ajax in the US), and industrial-grade isopropyl alcohol. And use a soft brush to clean the fluff off the needle before you play your records. In my experience, you don't need to use any software to de-noise most records unless they are either scratched, or the original recording has tape hiss. |
