Alaska Mike's Daughter in Maine

I am putting this above the line in the hope that I can attract some Mudcatters to South Portland to meet the lovely Lori - daughter of Mike and Tawmmie. She arrives tonight and leaves Sunday PM. Anyone available for an informal get together or a night out in Portland?

We've got tall ships in Portsmouth Harbour. Come see Prince William, Pride of Baltimore, Spirit of Bermuda, plus the slightly-tall Urania, the official Tall Ship of the Royal Netheralands Naval College.

A bunch of us will be singing there on Saturday.

That sounds like a plan, Jeri. Directions? Where to park? Who will be in the bunch?

Top red dot on this interactive map of Portsmouth (the maritime version) is where the ships will be. I'll be parking in the High-Hanover garage myself, but there may be free parking somewhere else. Tom/curmudgeon would know.

Tom & Linn will be there, the dorypersons (and they'll be bringing along a special guest from the deep (and I mean DEEP) south, maybe other Gloucesterpeeps, Barry Finn maybe - I can't remember if he has something else going on, other local folks (I'm sure), and moi.

I should just say that the limited number of singers have all been notified in advance - it's not a come-all-ye type of thing. People who want to gawk at gorgeous ships can pretty much just show up.

So we'll gawk and when no one is looking we'll hum along.

Lori arrived last night. The Downeaster was late, of course.
We went to a local pub for dinner and some live music. Neither panned out. The waitress served us drinks and saw us looking at menus but when we finally caught her to place an order - "The kitchen is closed".
DOH!
Then the live music started - a singer-songwriter night. The crowd was noisy, the acoustics awful so performers fought a losing battle. The shocker? The organizer who quieted the crowd for his own songs, yacked away at the bar in front of the performers who followed. Incredibly rude.
We picked up take-out Chinese and went home.
So Mom and Dad, your baby is safe, not hungry and had a good night's sleep. Today we are off to Portsmouth to wander around the shops and then the shanty crowd at the Press Room.
Mike's new CD is playing. Very nice. And a lyric sheet - thank you! My favorite song - "All My Troubles Go By". Very pretty.
Seamus didn't get to the beach - we slept. Guilt trips all around.

I'm glad Lori is in such good hands. We wish we were somewhat less far away from things in the lower 48 sometimes, but retirement is only 3 years away. Our children are scattered now over 5 different states (Mass., Indiana, Michigan, Arizona and Alaska). Tawmmie and I hardly get to see them at all. I hope you have a great time in Portsmouth. Keep us posted, Mary, we look forward to seeing you again sometime too.

She'll be treated well in Portsmouth Mike, even thought she'll be getting an earful of shanties.

Give her best wishes from the HOT southwest. Mike, is "Hate To See You Go" about her or another of the brood?

I know you folks in New England will treat her like family, Barry. Shanties are fine with me, I just don't know very many. Wish I could be there in person to harmonize. I'd kind of like to see those tall ships as well.

Art, I know its quite hot down there, I spoke with my brother just the other day. He lives in Parker, Arizona where the temp was over 120 F. Too hot for me. "Hate To See You Go" was written when my oldest daughter, Tracy, left for college back in 1994. But I miss each one when they finally leave the nest.

Lori is tucked away in her bed. Tami and Bandit just left. The day started with a tour of local lighthouses with Seamus in tow. Lori did meet a man in Maine - a Japanese tourist who needed a photographer to capture him, his friends and a lighthouse.

Seamus had some brief swims while Lori visited Museum Gift Shops and trekked out to Spring Point Lighthouse.

Then back home to drop off the puppy, brush our teeth and off to Portsmouth. We had a wonderful time joining with the shanty singers aboard a tall ship whose name I have forgotten. Lunch and dinner at the Press Room. Lori did a bit more shopping and needs a week in Portsmouth to hit all the boutiques. She was well received by the Portsmouth crowd. All send greetings to Tawmmie and Mike. She met Barry Finn, Linn, Tom, Jeri, Danny Spooner, Bruce McIntyre, Peter and Joann Sousa and about a dozen others I am forgetting. She really fit in.

We stood on line for about a half hour before getting into the dock area and were entertained by three veterans from a local home all recovering from head injuries - ask Lori about Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix as well as Attila the Hun and the Hindenburg. I got a little nervous when everyone started baring their tattoos. But the management stepped in and gave us all pirate rings and stick on tattoos so all remained modestly dressed.

Tomorrow: breakfast with Kendall and Jacqui, Old Port shopping, and I am not sure what else although Lori still hasn't had a lobster.

She's wearing me out, Mike!
Love,

Ed the cat finally let me know how disgusted he is by the influx of houseguests and dogs. It's been years since he has gulped down two cups of dry food then walked to my bedroom door and coughed it all up. I think Bandit was the straw that broke the kitty's back. At least I saw it before I stepped in it barefoot.
Nice kitty...nice kitty.

I hope you can last til the end of the day, Mary. You see how Lori is, you can imagine what they are like when all five of my children get together. This happened to Tawmmie last fall. Thank goodness I was in a coma.

Lori is on her way back to Boston after lunch with Kendall and Jacqui - Lori's first lobster.
We shopped 'til we dropped, visited JP Thornton's, Micca's favorite hangout, rested for a moment and put her on a train.
All the brothers were valiant.

Thank you for taking such fine care of our lovely daughter, Mary. She called us today to say how much fun she had under your watchful eye. This was just the relaxing weekend she needed to recharge her batteries and get set for the rest of the summer. I hope we can visit you again ourselves sometime soon. Now that she's gone you should be able to rest for awhile and recharge your own batteries.

Mike

We had a great time with Lori at lunch yesterday. It was good to indoctrinate her into the lobster habit and I think that she will be coming back again for more!

She definitely fitted in with the Maniacs here.

The booth was three inches short and Kendall made the most of much to Lori's amusement. She'll be back.
