08 Jul 07 - 06:15 AM (#2096851) Subject: HELP. e-on tv advert? From: wilbyhillbilly I haven't got my hope up this time 'cos this is an obscure one, but, can anyone help?. The current advert for this power giant is playing a harmonica tune that I know I had once many years ago when harmonicas were popular (Larry Adler etc) although I don't think this was one of his. It sounds as though it is supposed to be a train with the occasional vocal oohs and aahs. My brain keeps flashing words like train and blues but it could be nothing, and it's driving me NUTS!!. Anybody help pleeeeeeeeeeeese? whb |

If you get desperate I could always digitise it to an MP3 for you but it's not the work of an instant. I seem to recall it was by Sonny Tery and Brownie McGee and calle Hootin' Blues inspired by the sounds of ships hooters but that may be pure fantasy and codswallop, it was so long ago. |

He was a trailblazer of a DJ who used technical tricks such as multi-tracking,etc, very innovative for that time and not to every listeners satisfaction. 'I wish he'd stop messing about with the records' was the jist of many complaints. But he carried on and blazed a path many would follow. He also chose all his own records, and scoured widely for them. I was an avid fan, and listening one night heard him play this wild music, harmonica and eerie whooping voice. When it was done he introduced it as 'Hootin' Blues' by the Sonny Terry Trio'. He played it freqently. It was much requested. Later, when I got into folk music and learned of Sonny Terry the memory of that Jack Jackson show came to me. Yes, Jackson definitely called it 'Hootin'Blues' by the Sonny Terry Trio. Very probably Sonny, Brownie McGhee, and his brother 'Sticks' McGhee. Burl. |

From: GUEST,Terry McDonald I have a Sonny and Brownie CD entitled 'Back Home Blues' and the second track is 'Whoopin' the Blues' (Sonny on his own) which sounds like the one on TV advert. I remember hearing this paricular piece of music when I was a child/early teenager(?) on Two Way Family Favourites on a Sunday Lunch time. I'm sure Burl is right about Jack Jackson playing it on his programmes. In the late 50s, Sonny and Brownie spent a lot of time in Britain, touring with the Chris Barber band. As 'singers/variety artists' they weren't subect to the Musicians' Union ban on Americans playing here, and I was lucky enought to see them three or four times. Whoopin the Blues was one of the standard numbers in their set. |

I just watched that clip of Broadstairs (which is NOT the one they are showing in our area) and it gave me goose pimples. I recognised the houses standing up high and it brought back long forgotten memories of when I must have been only about 3 or 4 years old. We stayed in a large house at the end of a row that had a road outside that ended at the edge of a cliff, and I remember my dad who was in the army at the time, exercising the men marching up and down outside, with me joining in with a little wooden rifle. It must have been well before 1945. Thanks for the memory! whb |

From: Roger the Skiffler Sonny of course used this technique frequently but his showcase number had different titles at different times. On the LP "Long way from home" recorded in 1969 it is Wailin' & Whoopin' ;on a 1989 CD reissue called Midnight Special (reissue of 1960 LP Blues and Folk) it appears as Sonny's Squall and this is closest to the advert version of the recordings I've got. His 1947 version of "Whoopin' the blues is similar but has quite a different introduction (issued on CD as Whoopin' the blues:the Capitol recordings 1947-1950).
