08 Jul 07 - 09:10 PM (#2097347) Subject: RE: BS: If you carrot all From: Bill D there's some REAL 'roots music' there! Well, I found that one on a link from WFMU Radio page...which I found by finding this archive of shows from WFMU while searching for "Sol K Bright's Hollywaiians" because I heard "Hawaiian Cowboy" at http://cowboyculturalsociety.com/ I did have to listen to the whole show, but hey.... ain't the WWW grand? |

He says "Dr. I don't know what's wrong with me." The Dr. says, "Your not eating right." |

09 Jul 07 - 05:27 AM (#2097550) Subject: RE: BS: If you carrot all From: JennyO In Australia, we have this guy - Linsey Pollak. He makes instruments out of practically any vegetable, and a lot of other things as well, such as music stands, chairs, watering cans and rubber gloves. You can hear some of them on his website. I've seen him at the National Folk Festival a couple of times, and he is amazing. For instance, he'll stand on stage carving up a carrot, putting the holes in the right places, then a minute later he plays it like a whistle. He uses mouthpieces off real instruments for a lot of the blowing ones, and they sound just like a saxophone, an oboe, or whatever. The Rubber Glove Bagpipes are one of my favourites. |

I eat snooker balls, I eat the red ones, the pink, the blue and the brown'. Doc says.... 'You're not getting enough greens'. Archimbolo would be rolling in his grave. LTS |
10 Jul 07 - 02:31 AM (#2098401) Subject: RE: BS: If you carrot all From: Rowan Thanks, JennyO, you beat me to the mention of Linsey and I can't do blue clickies anyway. As well as his kitchen sink orchestra he used to perform a sequence called "Kev the roadie". If you ever get to hear it, you'll never disregard gaffer tape again. Although he spent much time playing traditional instruments like the gaida (and I have a lovely story of him at Ennis in 1977) these days he spends a lot of time developing modern versions of reed instruments. His glass bass clarinet has to be both seen and heard to be believed. But carrot clarinets used to be his forte too. Cheers, Rowan |

10 Jul 07 - 09:14 PM (#2099331) Subject: RE: BS: If you carrot all From: Rowan Having just looked at the video clip I'd have to agree, Bill D. The comment over my shoulder (from the offspring who've seen Linsey in action) was to the effect that the Vienna mob aren't nearly as good as he; Linsey Pollak is seriously good, musically, with what he does and I'd go well out of my way to see and hear him. Cheers, Rowan |
10 Jul 07 - 11:53 PM (#2099430) Subject: RE: BS: If you carrot all From: JennyO Yes, I meant to say that about Linsey Pollak. The music really is very good and the instruments sound quite beautiful. If anyone hasn't yet checked out his website that I linked to upthread, you can hear some of it on there. |

01 Sep 07 - 12:27 PM (#2138408) Subject: RE: BS: If you carrot all From: GUEST,leeneia Thanks for posting, Bill D. I do not believe that you can take a carrot and make that flute-like sound with it. They must have modified it somehow. Mostly it's a charming video, but it gave me the creeps to see someone driving the bit of an electric drill into a vegetable held in his hand. The damage to the hand if the wet vegetable slipped would be terrible. Nonetheless I liked it enough to e-mail the link to my musical friends. |
