Could you point me in the right direction to obttin the words of a song my Mum used to sing only she has forgotten the words now as she is elderly and I was trying to locate them for her.

It started with
As I went out upon the ice ----------------
the ice it broke and down I went
and wet my tagliony

Many thanks

"As I went out upon the ice (Ag Dul amach ar an Leac Oighir dom) is also known sometimes as The Glin Cottage Polka or Johnny O'Leary's, comes from the Sliabh Luachra region of the Cork-Kerry border in Ireland. There is likely a connection with the comic song "Taglioni" which goes:

As I went out upon the ice,
The ice being rough and stony,
The ice it broke and down I went,
And wet my "Taglioni"!

"

"AS I WENT OUT UPON THE ICE - Polka - BREATHNACH CRE 2 #122 p65 Am from Denis Murphy, Co Kerry - MOYLAN 2 #52 p31 (##A) from John O Leary (melodeon) has words: "One day as I went out to skate, the ice was rough and stony - the ice it bent so in I went - and wet my Taglioni"

"

Sean Keane sings it, you might get it on his website, he gives lots of lyrics. I think it's SeanKeane.com

The lyrics to this have aleady been posted, thanks to Martin Ryan (spelt Taglioni). See this thread.

I've heard different versions of this. The Cork version has a different air to the Northern version (Fermanagh) that I think I heard Andy Irvine sing.

This is the version recorded from 80 odd year old farmer Martin reidy from County Clare, Ireland; to be found on CD 'Around The Hills of Clare.
23-2 The Tangaloni (Roud 3569) Martin Reidy, Tullochaboy, Connolly Rec. October 1977

There are new fashions out of late,
I cannot tell the reason.
There are new fashions out of late,
A dress for every season.

Chorus.
With me ring fol ah, rally do ri ra,
Me ring fold da ra loni.
And it's all about a new topcoat
They call the Tangaloni.

Ah, I went to town the other day,
I met with great disaster,
1 bought a pair of skating boots.
For to be a skating master.
And as I went skating on the ice.
And there I stood aloney,
And the ice, it broke, and down I went.
And I wet my Tangaloni.

I met a maid upon the road.
On me she took compassion.
She said, "Young man, draw in to the fire,
For I know you're in a passion."
And as I drew so near to the heat.
And there I stood aloney.
And she said, "Young man, keep up from the fire,
Or you'll burn your Tangaloni."

This girl, she had a little dog,
On him she christened Tony,
And every time I kissed the maid.
The dog'd bite my Tangaloni.

And I must buy a jaunting car.
And I must buy a pony.
And I must hire a servant maid
That'll brush my Tangaloni.

A Taglioni, referred to here as Tangaloni, was a type of overcoat popular in the 19th century which was named after a celebrated Italian family of professional dancers.

Other recordings: John Loughran, Co Ty¬rone, Harvest Home 2, Arts Council of North¬ern Ireland.

This song was also recorded by Shegui, on their album "Around the World for Sport", IIRC. Words are a bit different from those posted.

Last year I heard some Cork supporters on their way back from Croke Park singing a version this song and mimicking the actions of the dog (called, of course, Tony).

From: Jim Dixon

From Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads, Harding B 14(168):

TAGLIONI COAT
Tune, "Umbrella Courtship."
W. Jackson and Son (Birmingham), between 1842 and 1855

I once was shabby, low, and mean,
Loved knock-'em-downs and skittles,
Could smoke a second-hand dudeen,
Thought trotters dainty victuals,
But now such things I never eats.
I've cut each vulgar crony,
And lounges through the parks and streets
Wrapped in a Taglioni.

Cigar in mouth, I'm known in all
The fashionable quarters.
There very often words will fall
From London's fairest daughters,
Such as, "O, what a shape and air!"
Although I'm rather bony.
My figure quite compact appears
Wrapped in a Taglioni.

One chilly day, not long ago,
I met a sad disaster,
When on the Serpentine to show
Myself a skating master.
I circles cut. The ice gave way,
Transparent but not stony.
It cracked, gave way. I tumbled,
And soaked my Taglioni.

I flounced about with ... [illegible]
I just contrived to float did,
Until they kindly dragged me through
The bottom of a boat did.
A lady pitied my distress
And said, "I've lots of money.
You at my house may change your dress
And dry your Taglioni."

I did, and while before the grate
My toggery was drying,
Her face, her furniture, her plate,
I constantly was eyeing;
But when to talk of love I tried
In accents sweet as honey,
She blushed, hung down her head, & sighed,
"You'll burn your Taglioni."

I caught her hand, drooped on one knee,
And plied her well with flattery,
Until, "Dear youth, my heart," said she,
"You've stormed with Cupid's battery."
We are married now, a happy pair.
I keeps a shay and pony;
A flunky, too, to curl my hair
And brush my Taglioni.

God bless the ladies, one and all,
For they're angelic creatures.
Married, single, short or tall,
I love their charming features.
All you who'd gain a bride with posh
And rise by matrimony,
Don't sport a blouse or Mackintosh,
But try a Taglioni.

Woops! I thought I had forgotten to post those lyrics. Turns out, I had posted them in the other thread. See Gulliver's link, above. Now we have 2 copies.
