BS: Members who arrive as Guests

It can be annoying when some members decide to log out and return as guests. Despite what they may think, your style of writing is a fingerprint.

This might sound harsh but some of the things that I have read on the forum can be very rude and not necessary. 95% of the people here are serious about this site, but it really is annoying when they guestpost.

If you have a true opinion, you put your name to it!!

I have said before that all opinions count, but the system is kinda like....
being able to call a stranger on the phone and tell them they are ugly and not give your name, and hang up. Not fair..

Just food for thought, I still think its the best site on the internet!

Anyone who posts as Guest in the BS section risks having that post deleted. Joe has warned us over and over.

Bet me to it Spaw. Wonder why he/she felt the need to disguise him/herself for this one. The lady doth protest too much.

I doubt it is Mudcat member known as MAG. Too bad someone had to use her moniker this way.

If my cookies aren't working because we have had an upgrade on the system overnight, I usually write in my mudcat name as a guest, but sometimes, because you are used to having your name there, it is possible to hit the submit button without thinking. The only answer is to go back in and ask Joe to add your name or own the message.

The claim that members are doing this is made quite frequently.

Max, Joe and Jeff have said that it is a rare occurance. And they have ways of tracking.

I know whose opinions on it I trust more.

On the other hand, a couple of members have established "Guest" personalities - and will logout to post as that character. but those are not normally the type post being complained about.

Nor is it the members who might occasionally log out to post about a 'delicate' subject where they would rather keep their anonymity.

I don't know how frequently some members post as troublesome guests, but I trust the opinions of Max, Joe and Jeff when they say it isn't all that often.

On those occasions, I imagine the people concerned might be warned, and if they persist in doing it, they could always be banned. That hardly ever happens, but in theory it could.

Kat, that's why I put (Member as Guest) after it.

I actually should have said ""Guest personalities".

I don't think it's "lady doth protest too much" as much as "hitting a raw nerve".

Who can honestly place their hand on their heart and say they never did this ?

Guest MAG, I have never posted as a guest since joining, except by accident a couple times when I didn't notice my cookie had expired or been eaten.

If I have an unpopular opinion, I can state it with moniker intact.

I've posted accidentally without logging in; I'm sure it's happened to all of us. But that's not the kind of "member-as-guest" postings we're discussing here, is it?

I occasionally consider logging out to create a new thread anonymously, in order to introduce some "delicate" issue ~ but I think about it much more often than I actually do so. I'll typically mull over the subject, imagine what I'd like to write, and get things worked out in my mind without ever actually posting my anonymous rant.

When I feel strongly enough about something I read in one of these threads, I'll usually react immediately and start typing, without taking the time to consider logging out and shedding my identity, and certainly without worrying about whether my opinion will prove to be unpopular or controversial. If I put my foot in my mouth once in a while, so be it. (Like MMario just said above, "When I say something rude and obnoxious I do it as myself! Whether I have a cookie at the time or not.")

The only time I've posted anonymously I called myself Guest - Temporarily Anonymous, and it was for a specific reason which involved my not using my "handle" for that particular thread. I have never logged out just to post as a Guest to a thread - the temporarily Anonymous one was a thread I had started to ask about issues relating to the identity in reality of an online person. Do people really log out and then post opinions to threads as if they were mere guests? Why bother? It's not like anybody knows who you are in real life who would change their opinion of you, and anybody who already knows you in real life won't change their opinion of you anyway...

A good tactic, Poppa. I've often actually written a reply & then canned it without posting it, because I know it's far too incendiary. The writing is cathartic in itself. Of course, sometimes I do post it. Alas, I gave the wonderful Joe angst recently & he deleted an entire thread. Mea culpa, but I still think the target deserved the response!

I can understand the point MAG (Arran, if it is/was Arran) is making. I've railed against Guests trolling often enough. But posting as "Member as Guest" probably wasn't the best way of making said point. Word to the wise & all that... ;-)

I can go with Mmario here. If I have something to say it goes under my name - if I can't do that I don't post at all.
