Lyr Add: Rambling Sid Rumpo (x 2)

14 Jul 07 - 03:38 AM (#2102218)
Subject: Lyr Add: Rambling Sid Rumpo (x 2)
From: Mr Red

heard on a round the Horne replay recently

1)
KH - Oh, good

RSR - yes, after a hard day in the grunge foundary, hammering their artefacts, the jolly grungemen repair to the local hostelry or fumbleshop and charge their thunderjugs with the foaming nut brown meths and then they link nadgers and let forth this stirring refrain. As follows:

Come fellows raise your fumblejugs, until your nadgers plungin'
Come raise aloft your nutbrown splod, for soon we'll all be mungin'
for tonight I'll drain the potted dry, every man shall do the same as
I
If he don't I'll wordle in his eye.............., tomorrow he'll be grungin'
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

tune is come Landlord fill the flowing bowl.

2)
Keneth Horne - Now what are you going to sing for us this week?

Rambling Sid Rumpo - 'Tis a master fumblers's tradling air, and tells of a fair young maid from Hackney Wick for whom he'd glady wordle his stunging troon and it goes after this fashion

In 'Ackney Wick there lives a lass whos grommets would I woggle,
Her gander partsnan puts her pass and her posset makes me boggle.
Her moolies fine, her grunge devine. The way her loomers tick,
I'd give up work for one quick nerk, (I won't go into a long explanation of the precise meaning of the word nerk as it would weary you)
Sweet lass of Hackney Wick,
Sweet lass of Hackney Wick, Sweet lass of Hackney Wick,
I'd give a groat for one quick scrote, Sweet lass of Hackney Wick.

For non-UK 'Catter and those too young to know - it was Kenneth Williams and - well yopu can guess - better heard than read.

I am not sure if Rambling Sid Rumpo was up there with Woody Guthrie among the folk icons of the twentieth century, but I would not have wanted to miss his contribution!

Ramblin Sid! We were too young to understand all the nuances, but Round the Horne was a major part of my childhood.

Strange that Kenneth Williams was so loved, even through such homophobic times as we were living.

He always made me laugh and I couldn't have given two hoots about his sexual predilictions. I was too young then (and we were generally YOUNG in those days) to even be aware of the idea of homosexuality.

Mr Red,

In the first song you quoted, I believe

"...for tonight I'll drain the potted dry, every man shall do the same as I..."

should be

"...for tonight I'll drain the posset dry, every man shall do the same as I

My personal favourite:

Ye nurgles and bogles
Of Bonnie Glen Pustule,
Oft have I greebled
Amongst your trees,
And wurtled my lassie
Among your nettles,
Swore my devotion
And stung both my knees...

We bogled and grundled
And grundled and bogled -
I grotted my muckles
For bonnie wee Joan,
Now she's run away with
A plumber from Sidcup,
So I lurk in the forest
And wurtle alone

Liz, you're obviously far too young to know that we can't vada anything on the radio. It means see.

But what you would vada, if you could, would be someone's eek. Short for eekaff. Or ecaf. Which is face spelled backwards.

As any fule kno.

Right. That starts another one. Who else remembers nigel molesworth?

OK, so I'm not up on the polari - it's not my scene... but at least I've heard of them!

And... to be even more pedantic - some time ago, the BBC7 website did have pictures of Kenneth Willaims and Hugh Paddick so I COULD vada their dolly old eeks.

Besides - the pictures are always better on the radio.

She sounds just like J Peasemold Gruntfuttock already, but that would be the clincher.

My grandfather's grunge ws too big for the house, so he kept it outside by the door.
It was bigger by half than the old man himself, and it weighed half a hundredweight more.
He would whirl it around with a mighty booming sound, while my granny looked on in surprise.
But, he's stop short, never to grunge again, when it's cold outside.

therre was more but I can't remember it.

Additions and corrections welcome.
----

And Walrus, I think 2 way Family Favourites (which my Mum always called Forces Favourites) was first, then I think Bill Cotton (Wakey Wakey), and then Round the Horne, or Navy Lark, or Clitheroe Kid. These were followed by Movie-go-Round, with the theme from Carousel as the signature tune.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

My riah is perfectly bona, thank you but the lallies leave a lot to be desired - like about 6 more inches in length!

When Limpit and I go shopping we navigate the trolley through the aisles with 'Right turn, Clyde' (Any which way but loose) and 'Left hand down a bit'. It's caused many an amused look from older shoppers...

As an aside, Jon Pertwee was probably the only main cast member who was actually in the navy. He overlapped his time on HMS Troutbridge and in the TARDIS and in 'Dr Who and the Sea Devils', he disguised himself as a Naval officer. There are a couple of 'in jokes' on the Navy Lark about him 'moonlighting' and requests for a doctor which are greeted with giggles.

We seem to have forgotten H.h.h.h.ancocks Half Hour - a radio programme long before it was on TV and "Educating Archie".

For any American or older readers "Educating Archie" was a fine example of that little known phenomenon, a radio programme featuring a ventriloquist and his dummy.

Yes, a ventriloquist and his dummy - but doesn't that mean?????......Yes it does.

I'll get mi coat. I am still struggling with the concept even though I was there at the time.

Educating Archie is WAY before my time and hasn't been on BBC7 yet.

I am enjoying the replays of 'Round the Horne' though... but 'The Embassy Lark' is not doing it for me.

Educating Archie was a springboard into the 'Big Time' for a LOT of good comedians - Max Bygraves , Tony Hancock , Beryl Reid and a whole string of others .

I am old enough (just) to remember Jon Pertwee in his Navy days appearing with Eric Barker in a Radio show in war time which ran parallel to Kenneth Horne/ Richard Murdoch in Much Binding in the Marsh and Charlie Chester in Stand Easy.
Pertwee played an assortment of characters including The Postman, always reminiscing about his days as a bugler at Plymouth, The Padre, named Wetherby Wett, and Flying Officer Kyte of the Fleet Air Arm.
But enough of this, back to Rambling Sid....

I took out my cordwangle oh, and let me moolies dangle oh.
Then she took hold of my artefacts, and gave them a couple of hearty whacks,
Which took me breath away!

To the tune of 'Dashing Away with a Smoothing Iron.

Beyond our Ken was the earlier (and in my opinion funnier) show.

For Round the Horne, there was a new scriptwriter (Marty Feldman) who apparently HATED folk music, which was the reason for Ramblin' Sid, but it backfired a bit when he became a success.

Does anyone have "Spotty Lil of the Balls Pond Road"?

The one noone has mentioned yet is Life With The Lyons (Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon). It immediately followed Billy Cotton, and my father who hated American comedians, as soon as he heard the words 'And now Life With The Lyons', would jump up and switch it off. I was about 10 efore I found out it was a comedy. I genuinely believed that it was a natural history programme about lions, and that my father was switching it off because he believed it would be too scary for me!

"I got a Rambling Sid Rumpo CD from Amazon. They've still got copies."

yeh, I bet they have. I made the mistake of buying the double cassette of Julian and Sandy. After about ten minutes you get a bit fed up of flirtatiousness. Double entendre doesn't sustain that long. I just kept wishing they'd get married and settle down in a bungalow - somewhere nice.

Bonar Bottoms, maybe?

I haven't read through to if it's there but I remember a verse form
another Rambling Sid ditty...

I'll tell you a tale of a highwayman bold,
Whose feats were remarkable, so we are told.
He'd scrope all the ladies and wurdle the men,
And he'd straddle his nadger and ride off again.

What a nostalgia trip reading through all the above.
I rem that Julie Andrews began her radio career on "Educating Archie".
What has surprised me somewhat is the fact that no-one has mentioned the great serial "DICK BARTON - Special Agent, who took on all kinds of crooks and spies with the help of his loyal "Jock" the Scotsman and "Snowy" the chirpy cockney .
If I remember correctly the show was at 7.30pm on the BBC Light Programme (1500 Med Wave) ?
There was also a show on Sunday mornings, repeated , I think, on some weekday evening, called RIDERS OF THE RANGE, does anyone remember that ?
It featured a rancher, Cal McCord, and his cowboys, driving cattle to the railhead many , many miles away and having to fight off rustlers, "Red Indians" and Coyotes etc.
