OK, so I'm not up on the polari - it's not my scene... but at least I've heard of them!

And... to be even more pedantic - some time ago, the BBC7 website did have pictures of Kenneth Willaims and Hugh Paddick so I COULD vada their dolly old eeks.

Besides - the pictures are always better on the radio.

And Walrus, I think 2 way Family Favourites (which my Mum always called Forces Favourites) was first, then I think Bill Cotton (Wakey Wakey), and then Round the Horne, or Navy Lark, or Clitheroe Kid. These were followed by Movie-go-Round, with the theme from Carousel as the signature tune.

My riah is perfectly bona, thank you but the lallies leave a lot to be desired - like about 6 more inches in length!

When Limpit and I go shopping we navigate the trolley through the aisles with 'Right turn, Clyde' (Any which way but loose) and 'Left hand down a bit'. It's caused many an amused look from older shoppers...

As an aside, Jon Pertwee was probably the only main cast member who was actually in the navy. He overlapped his time on HMS Troutbridge and in the TARDIS and in 'Dr Who and the Sea Devils', he disguised himself as a Naval officer. There are a couple of 'in jokes' on the Navy Lark about him 'moonlighting' and requests for a doctor which are greeted with giggles.

We seem to have forgotten H.h.h.h.ancocks Half Hour - a radio programme long before it was on TV and "Educating Archie".

For any American or older readers "Educating Archie" was a fine example of that little known phenomenon, a radio programme featuring a ventriloquist and his dummy.

Yes, a ventriloquist and his dummy - but doesn't that mean?????......Yes it does.

I'll get mi coat. I am still struggling with the concept even though I was there at the time.

I am old enough (just) to remember Jon Pertwee in his Navy days appearing with Eric Barker in a Radio show in war time which ran parallel to Kenneth Horne/ Richard Murdoch in Much Binding in the Marsh and Charlie Chester in Stand Easy.
Pertwee played an assortment of characters including The Postman, always reminiscing about his days as a bugler at Plymouth, The Padre, named Wetherby Wett, and Flying Officer Kyte of the Fleet Air Arm.
But enough of this, back to Rambling Sid....

I took out my cordwangle oh, and let me moolies dangle oh.
Then she took hold of my artefacts, and gave them a couple of hearty whacks,
Which took me breath away!

Beyond our Ken was the earlier (and in my opinion funnier) show.

For Round the Horne, there was a new scriptwriter (Marty Feldman) who apparently HATED folk music, which was the reason for Ramblin' Sid, but it backfired a bit when he became a success.

Does anyone have "Spotty Lil of the Balls Pond Road"?

The one noone has mentioned yet is Life With The Lyons (Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon). It immediately followed Billy Cotton, and my father who hated American comedians, as soon as he heard the words 'And now Life With The Lyons', would jump up and switch it off. I was about 10 efore I found out it was a comedy. I genuinely believed that it was a natural history programme about lions, and that my father was switching it off because he believed it would be too scary for me!

yeh, I bet they have. I made the mistake of buying the double cassette of Julian and Sandy. After about ten minutes you get a bit fed up of flirtatiousness. Double entendre doesn't sustain that long. I just kept wishing they'd get married and settle down in a bungalow - somewhere nice.

What a nostalgia trip reading through all the above.
I rem that Julie Andrews began her radio career on "Educating Archie".
What has surprised me somewhat is the fact that no-one has mentioned the great serial "DICK BARTON - Special Agent, who took on all kinds of crooks and spies with the help of his loyal "Jock" the Scotsman and "Snowy" the chirpy cockney .
If I remember correctly the show was at 7.30pm on the BBC Light Programme (1500 Med Wave) ?
There was also a show on Sunday mornings, repeated , I think, on some weekday evening, called RIDERS OF THE RANGE, does anyone remember that ?
It featured a rancher, Cal McCord, and his cowboys, driving cattle to the railhead many , many miles away and having to fight off rustlers, "Red Indians" and Coyotes etc.
