18 Jul 07 - 05:23 PM (#2106216) Subject: Eric Hoard (Ian & Sylvia) From: GUEST,Jim I'm not sure if this is the correct spelling of Eric's last name, but he was Ian & Sylvia's accompanist (guitar and banjo) at the 1961 and/or 1962 Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia. Does anyone know what he's doing now? Eric, John Herald and Monte Dunn inspired me to learn to flatpick the guitar. |

There's a special story to be told concerning one man's contribution: Dr. Eric Hord, the man who played many classic guitar parts on famous songs by the Mamas & Papas and Barry McGuire. Nowadays he's a contruction worker and doesn't play anymore. But he's a friend of producer John Bird and one day there was a knock on the studio door and in walked an unkempt elderly figure in a worn tie dye shirt and baggy shorts. It was the Doctor. As a surprise to everybody, he agreed to play on a track and added a one-take improvisation to the albums's core tune "Good Ole' Boy in Gomorrah" . Then he left and was not seen again. So, this might be the last and final performance of the legendary Doctor Eric Hord on record." That is a few years old. |

Written by Fred Hellerman, the song was called "The Biggest Ride Since Paul Revere" and was released by MGM that spring. We later split up, but I've not seen Eric since. He was (is?) a masterful banjo picker and guitarist. If you see this, Eric, it was an honor knowing you. |

They had a teenage daughter and maybe also a son. I was in my mid-20s and Eric seemed to me at the time to be a stoned old hippy-type of person. Always very friendly. I knew he played guitar but not that he was "The Doctor" or had played with any big names. I recall I gave him some parts from some old guitars I had. They didn't remain the managers for too long after I moved in. |
