Oh, bloody hell, how did I miss that? ... Please, if anyone did record this, they can count this as another request for a bootleg dvd.

I am a big fan of Emma Kirkby, but why wait till she's on TV? I hear her lots on Radio 3. The sound's better too!

Sorry - I've got the 2nd half recorded (I didn't realise until too late either), but not in a form I can easily copy. I've just had a look at itv.com. They are planning a 30-day catch-up PC video service soon, but it's not in operation yet. They also do podcasts from some of the South Bank Shows. There isn't one for this show, but it might be worth checking back on the site later.

Now I can die happy - someone calling themselves 'punkfolkrocker' is into Emma Kirkby! Good on you! What is she singing these days?

Pardon the oldtimer's memory, but I first saw her in the 1970s at St Martin in the Fields. This young, stunning pre-Raphaelite angel came onto the stage, in white robes with cascading red-gold hair down to her waist. I sat with my mouth open, not sure she could possibly be real. Then she started singing, and I fell off my chair.

I do understand the folk connection. At that time there were two great female singers with a pure arresting voice tone. One was Maddy Prior, and the other was Emma Kirkby, both still going strong. In those days they were singing very different stuff. Nowadays it wouldn't surprise me to come across a duet.

Cheers,
Chris

What a lovely description!

And yes, there's plenty of folk relevance and lots of crossover (common ground even) between early music and folk music. Vivien Ellis of Alva and the DuFay Collective is a good example - similar kind of voice, sings both folk and early music, and apparently has a credibility problem in both worlds (too folky for the classical world, too classical for the folk scene). I don't have a problem with it, but then I've got a foot in both camps too.

Wish I'd known about it. Fantastic singer. One of her albums of Dowland songs is among my favourites.

I agree with Anahata, I find early music and folk music complement each other remarkably well.

Suddenly i think of Sting singing Dowland, a recent hit.

he sounds like the man-in-the-street doing it, which makes him sound very allied to folk-singing.

Saw prog over my shopulder from comp. Was surprised when she said what linked the music from the 11th to the 18th cventuries was the words, and loved seeing everyone singing Bach in day clothes, jeans etc. Lovely.

Saw just the last five minutes, curses! She came and sang at the parish church in Bishops Castle a while ago. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up!

Thanks Treewind for some others to look out for.

My music collection started with folk and early music. Another connection is that they are both modal, but I wouldn't dare mention that on Mudcat, or we'll get five people competing to each provide the more impenetrable 'explanation' of modality. Shhhh!

But back to Emma, 'A Feather on the Breath of God' linking her with Hildegard of Bingen is hard to top.

Thanks for reminding me of happy times.

Chris

A trillion years ago she did an album of Alasdair Clayre (hope I'm spelling it right)'s songs entitled "Adam and the Beasts". Great stuff. Anybody ever hear it? I used to have a copy (orange cover, LP) but it seems to have disappeared during one of my many house-moves, probably borrowed & not returned.

BTW, for anyone who doesn't already know, she's Dame Emma Kirkby now.

I'd recommend the Emma Kirkby Collection CD -one of my favourites!
Also Emily van Evera- I think is her name - worth listening to -Dufay collective and Circa 1500 if they are still together

Best CD value I got was a cheap ASV(??) wth Emma and Evelyn Tubb performing Monteverdi Duets. Ecstacy!!
