Lyr Req: Twenty Pound Dog

Someone sang this song last night
"Champion he was a dandy
......
.....with his black and tan terrier
And murdered my twenty pound dog"

Made me wonder
Would it have been OK if Champion had killed the terrier?

TWENTY POUND DOG

My name it is Michael McCarthy I come from a place of renown
Had a bet with one Timothy O'Flahaty that my bulldog could wallop the town
He told me of one Terrence Murphy who lived away out in the bog
Who had an old black and tan terrier that could murder my twenty pound dog

Oh Champion he was a dandy, till Murphy that dirty old sod
Came along with his black and tan terrier
And he murdered my twenty pound dog

Well I let out my bold twenty pounder He looked just as good as a king
How he eyed that black and tan terrier as they both sashayed right round the ring
They fought for an hour and a quarter it was away out in the bog
And the terrier he took all the laurels and a corpse lay my twenty pound dog

I swore that I'd have satisfaction, I off with my coat and my hat
Made a race for the whole Murphy faction from big Terrence down to little Pat
Then I made a race for the terrier and I kicked him way out in the bog
And all the way home I swore vengeance sweet vengeance for my twenty pound dog

Must admit Bill, I share Mo's distaste for the song, not one I'd want to learn or listen to.
Giok

An earlier thread on this one.

Woof!

Coming from a province where there is still an ugly underground dog-fight business, for the sake of which many innocent animals have been tormented and killed, I would never sing this song, historic though it may be.

What is wrong with people?

It's the same with all the songs glorifying fox hunting but we can't sanitize history we can only learn from it.

But as Bee said, it's not history, it's still going on, and in the UK too.

So is foxhunting, but that is beside the point.
The song is at least 30 years old - probably much older - so cannot possibly be referring to anything that is happening today.

I have never heard the same argument being used about the 'Cappie the Dog' song

Dog fights are put on by men who are not sure of their own maleness. It is less trouble than doing their own fighting. Or, maybe they simply have wee willies and have to overcompensate.

Nutty, I don't know the 'Cappie the Dog' song. I do understand why someone who'd grown up with this song as part of their local heritage might sing it, I have no problem with that, but it isn't part of my heritage, and I have no desire to bring it in.

Personally, I find the lyrics revolting, but I wouldn't stop someone else singing it.

I suppose what struck me as offensive was that not only was McCarthy prepared to use his dog for fighting, but he wanted revenge on the other innocent dog afterwards.
Nutty said "The song is at least 30 years old - probably much older - so cannot possibly be referring to anything that is happening today." Maybe so but by joining in the chorus I was condoning the attitude depicted.

I always liked the story Gamble Rogers used to tell about the tourist who was told another man's dog had killed his dog. The tourist was astonished. He told the onlookers that his dog was a Great Dane. What kind of dog could kill a Great Dane? "A Chihuahua," was the reply. "How on Earth could a Chihuahua kill a Great Dane?" "He got stuck in the Dane's throat."
