I know it's a bit late to mention this, but...

"Porter Wagoner and his back-up band, Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives will be on the Late Show with David Letterman! tonight, July 25!"

An Event of Wagonerian Proportions?

No, but Porter Wagoner turns 80 on 12 AUG 2007, which is something most of us will never do.

Also, Marty Stuart is one of the most underrated musicians around. He is a stand-out on mandolin, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and vocal. I hope to see him some day and it does not matter if he plays rock'n'roll, country or bluegrass.

I saw him live as a young kid with Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass and a late teen with Doc Watson in his child prodigy days when he looked like a Countrified Donny Osmond with incredible chops on mandolin and fiddle. Then I saw him on TV with Johnny Cash and playing Rockabilly guitar with his own band on Austin City Limits and in recent years, hosting Opry segments. He has learned what to do with a limited voice since those early attempts on that first Ridge Runner album and to become an excellent showman.

Most of us are lucky to claim to be a Child Progeny.

Marty has been to the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View several times and put on first class shows each time. He was also on the Tribute to Woody Guthrie at Folk Alliance in Nashville a few years ago. I would doubt there is any artist working out of Nashville who has more love and respect for country music traditions. He produced Wagoner's latest CD. My favorite track is "Committed to Parkview".

He also, if memory serves me right is married to country singer Connie Smith & has probably the biggest collection of country music memorabilia that there is, including stage clothes etc. Anyone give us more info about this?

I do know he has a large collection of country music memorabilia and many items are on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum in Nashville.   I have also seen displays of photographs he took of some of the Nashville old timers. I was quite impressed by his support and comments during the Woody Guthrie Tribute.

There's a really good article in the Folkwax Ezine this week about Marty. I just can't make the dadgum blue clicky work today.
