Omigosh -
I don't know the song; didn't even know there was such a song, but I tried to get a job babysitting Ian and Sylvia's son in the late '60's, and their pet name for him was "Mr. Spoons."

Right. It was written by them for and about him. I do have it somewhere. I will try to find it.

. . . O. K. It was easier to find than I thought. It is on their Lovin Sound Album, MGM 4388. Actually, it is credited to just I. Tyson. I am taping it from the LP for easier transcribing. I will be back with it later this evening.

From the LP notes by John Court: "They're partners in life as well as in music, which must have its difficult moments like the prospect of having to sing with someone you were maybe not speaking to. But they certainly have made that work, what with that thing rolling around on the rug, young Clayton Dawson, herein and hereafter referred to as 'Mr. Spoons.' "

Mr. Spoons
Ian Tyson, recorded on Lovin' Sound, MGM 4388, 1967.

Mr. Spoons, you make me laugh in the morning
And no one else has ever done that before
Not for a long, long time
Little boy, you hide cares away without warning
You make me laugh, make me cry
Far as I can see, you're my reason for living
Cause you never, never know 'bout living
And you never, never know 'bout loving
And one day he's here and its all so clear

Spring schemes die, I let them pass me by without knowing
But fall dreams lie so warm in his eyes
Bright, brown eyes
Stay with me until the time when you're all finished growing
You made me laugh, made me cry
Far as I can see you're my reason for living
Cause you never, never know 'bout living
And you never, never know 'bout loving
And one day he's here and its all so clear, Mr. Spoons

Sylvia joins Ian on the last three lines of each stanza.

thought you might be interested to know that "Mr. Spoons" aka Clay Tyson is all grown up and starting to make a name for himself as a singer-songwriter in Toronto.

Yes, I saw his interlog page which I found some time ago through his mother's Quartette page. It doesn't mention Mr. Spoons. (must have lost that nickname a while back!!)

The Internet Cowboy Page is a great jumping off place for Ian Tyson, Sylvia Tyson, Quartette, Wilf Carter, Cindy Church, and a great many things Western. Here is the introductory message on the site: This site is devoted to the Western lifestyle that is Southern Alberta. From the Cowboys, to the Rodeo, to the Ranchers, to the Oilmen, to Western Music and Western Hospitality. I hope you enjoy your ride through the West.

This has been a long time coming. My guitar teacher and I figured the chord chart out (mostly him, by the way) this week:

Intro: C Em Dm G
Verse 1: C Cm7 C7 Dm G / C Cm7 C7 F G / C Cm7 C7 G / C Em Dm G / Em Am Em Am / Dm A
Bridge: D F#m Em A
Verse 2: D Dm7 D7 Em A / D Dm7 D7 G A / D Dm7 D7 Em A / D F#m Em A / F#m Bm F#m Bm / Em A
Outro: D F#m Em A D

This is the version on Lovin' Sound. I have not yet checked it against the version on Full Circle.

Two things to add to the post above. Yes, it does work for the Full Circle version, although the intro is repeated once (I believe). And this is really important: capo on 4!
