31 Jul 07 - 07:29 AM (#2115389) Subject: The Acoustic Guitar Show (UK) Sept `07 From: GUEST A couple of years ago I met Phil Davy, the editor of "Good Woodworking" magazine, he'd just completed a series of articles on "boutique" guitar builders from around the world and when he spoke of an idea that he and a couple of friends had discussed for a festival celebrating the skills of British guitar builders I was immediately hooked and wanted to get involved. Having performed in just about every corner of the UK I'd encountered many enclaves of acoustic guitar builders / aficionados / collectors / players etc and I believed this would be the ideal opportunity for us all to get together and celebrate the richness and diversity of British Lutherie. Despite an initial impetus the plan was put on hold but Phil's enthusiasm and belief kept it alive and now, almost two years later it has reached fruition. "The Acoustic Guitar Show" has been put together by a team consisting of Phil, Paul Hayden and Matthew Haynes and is being staged over the weekend of 7th, 8th & 9th of September in Cheltenham Town Hall. Website: www.guitar-show.co.uk They have amassed a data base of over 130 UK based luthiers and each one has been contacted and invited to book a stand, with prices starting from as little as £60.00 it means that virtually every single guitar builder in the UK can afford to exhibit their instruments. The plan is to make this an annual event and I for one love the idea so PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE pass this on to every luthier and guitarist in your locality. As well as displays by individual instrument makers and retailers there are master classes, workshops, gigs, demonstrations, jam sessions, etc and for £5.00 (advance) day ticket and £12 for an evening concert it has to be the bargain of the year. It's my burpday so I may be ratarsed and it clashes with Knockholt which is one of my faves. I knew a man who got a series of gigs doing demos for Taylor guitars. Technically a bit of a wizard, but nothing you could sing along with and no observable soul. Clearly a marriage made in heaven! |

They've got Amrit Sond there - I've only seen him once, but it was very much "all sound and fury, signifying nothing". Lots of gimmicks (flip-off capos, eBows, bit of tapping, bit of body percussion) and sometimes good technical skill, but not much actual tune. Graham. |
