BS: Beckham Madness

Our British Friends may find amusement in this note. The entire available seating for Washington, DC's RFK Stadium, >43,000, has been sold out so that DC football (soccer) fans can have a chance to see Beckham MAYBE play with the LA Galaxy against DC United. He may or may not actually appear, due to his leg injury.

He played a bit in the second period. Thousands of screaming babes waited for a glimpse of him.
One observer said that, though he didn't see him, he was honored to be in Beckham's presence.

Blimey, life must be boring over there to allow an old crock to be the major force.

I don't see why football fans should have any less business to rent an aircraft than directors should on a corporation shindig. That happens rather more frequently and passes without comment. I am always baffled as to why some folks' fun should be less important than others.

Are they looking forward to hearing him try to speak English, with which he seems to have a problem!

It's amazing what some people will "buy into". Why a very talented - but not fanastic - footballer, and a manufactured pop singer, should have so much press coverage is farcical.

Laugh all you want, but, when the Yanks decide that football is worth $$$, they are gonna be hard to beat. Beckham is $$$... and, the Yanks have him. Do the math.

...so the Beckhams get into their taxi at Los Angeles International and the driver asks: "Where to?"

David says: "Drive us to the .... ooh, I can't remember the name of the hotel. It's ... no, it's gone, I'll get it in a minute. Help me out, mate ... give me the names of some London railway stations."

"I dunno. I'm from LA. What ... King's Cross?"

"No, that's not it."

"Euston?"

"Nope."

"Waterloo?"

"No."

"Paddington?"

"Still not it."

"Victoria?"

"That's it! Victoria. Yeah! ...

Victoria, what's the name of our hotel?"

No wonder he left Europe. Reading some of these comments would make me want to get the hell away from all the snobby whiners.

He's having fun, the fans are having fun, his "English" is fine - it is pure entertainment. The rest of you old farts can go kick your own balls.

This? This is nothing. For whining, you want to see the Kate Rusby thread.

(No, on second thoughts, you probably don't want to. I know I don't)

Sod the whining

this subject is important, in what way?

If watching Beckham play makes people happy, then it is important to them. That is enough.

RON, EtAl:
I never said the subject was important...This is after all the BS section.
I never said that those who bought their tickets were not entitled to enjoy the game.
In fact, I didn't intend to start anybody ranting for of against Beckham. He's hardly Hitler, or the Anti-Christ. he did, on the other hand, recieve a hefty chunk of ire for leaving Emgland.
I thought that those who loved to hate him would be amused to hear how he was being appreciated over here.
There was also a touch of an "isn't the nature of celebrity strange?" comment.
People who have read my posts over the years will know that I usually post in a tongue in cheeck style, but seldom in a knife in the back style.
No-one should think that I believe that Mr. Beckham gives a rat's ass about my jottings.

" I usually post in a tongue in cheeck style,"...
But it appears that I don't post in a "spell-check and proper grammer" style. This is evidenced by the numerous typos and spelling errors in my short posts.
I offer my regrets to proper practitioners of our most noble of languages.

Ron

You may not have experienced the problems in the UK.

The blind attachment of large numbers people to soccer causes problems in a small old country. TV shows little else - when it can get away with it, we have had riots between tribes which the football community seem to refuse to see as their problem and their duty to solve. It is aof course everyone's problem which politicians cannot do much about it - lest they votes. Something that pervasive has a duty. It barely addresses that duty. The problem has been worse but it is a long way from being solved.

Anything about soccer should acknowledge the problems it causes, whining is not strong enough. Action is needed, still.

I get the feeling that baseball in the US has largely solved the crowd/tribal problem. Hockey has been through it, has it solved the crowd problems yet?

Enjoying soccer? Some people enjoy trouble and can hide in large crowds. Large crowds need careful control, they are dangerous because of that too. Soccer should be acting, but seem hidebound, the vast sums of money have a big influence.

Hillsborough was a disater waiting to happen, it was caused by large crowds and the "me" generation demanding to be let in regardless of ploice remonstration on grounds of safety. Spectators were sad, how many were circumspect? Let alone acted on the experience?
It is always someone elses fault and there are a lot of someone elses in large crowds, large number of police, large sume being paid to players, to TV.

Those of who don't like soccer told you so. Who was listening? No humble pie eaten over here.

David is a very talented football(soccer) player. It is a shame he married such a horrible person as POSH. But saying that they have two very nice kids and should be applauded for thier care and support towards them.
   Cheers Mick.

From a Footballing point of view David Beckham is a good player, when fit.He lets the ball do the work.He is an excellent distributor of the ball.Excellent at free kicks, corners and long ball passing.
He rarely takes on players, which for me is a shame as he has the ability, but is an excellent crosser of the ball from the right. His tackling is not his strong point and he has the tendency of staying in the middle and trying to run the game from there. In the last World cup he lacked fitness and kept in the middle and was not effective. On his recent return to the England team he is back on the wing ,fit and eager to play well and is.In his current form he is an assett to any team.
As for Victoria ,it would be nice for a change to see her pose for the cameras with her mouth shut.

David Beckeham - feh.

I remember when we had real football here - I used to go to all the Cosmos homegames at Giant Stadium. Pele, Chinaglia, Beckenbauer, and a few good american guys. Great matches evn though the american offsides rule sucked.
