Liege & Lief live at Cropredy 2007

Great idea of Fairport to celebrate 40 years at Cropredy by performing the whole of the legendary Liege & Lief album on the Friday using the original line-up minus Sandy of course (rip) i.e Richard Thompson, Ashley Hutchins, Dave Mattocks, Simon Nicol, Swarb and Chris Wiley (standing in for Sandy). Should be fab!

That should be Chris While, Vin. Yes, an interesting event as you say.

Too early for a report yet, but looking forward to seeing one.

Did the BBC record it I wonder?

It was absolutely amazing!!!!!
A one-off piece of history in the making. Such a privilege to be there.
Particularly emotional to see Dave Swarbrick dancing about the stage and showing he is still one of he best fiddle players. "A fantastic advert for the NHS" to quote Simon Nicol's introduction.
Chris While was "living her dream" singing for Sandy. She was superb.

I believe BBC2 were recording it to be screened at a date tbc.

Good that the BBC have made the effort!

It was exceptional. One of the best things I've heard for a very long time. Hope they do it again.

Youtube seems to be down right now so I can't provide the exact location but you can see and hear the L&L lineup doing Matty Groves at the BBC folk awards there with Chris While doing a great job on the vocals.

That sounds exciting. Liege and Lief has always been one of my favorite albums.

The Durbervilles, who have a regular show on BBC Radio Leeds, were there collecting material. To quote from their myspace page:

"we're gathering material for future shows at Cropredy Festival. This should include a future Lieg & Lief special with all the surviving line up contributing!"

It was wonderful.

As others have said, Swarb was absolutely on top form. He and Richard Thompson had got a superb rapport going just like the old days. DM's cowbell rang out on the Toss the Feathers medley - off went Swarb - no stopping him! As Simon Nicol said, he's the best advert there is for the National Health Service.

The festival will be on the radio (BBC, Mike Harding) - I think the cameras were from an independent company employed by Fairport. I did hear that they were going to be documenting the 40th anniversary tour - don't know how much footage they did. But there will be a DVD!

I only managed to make the Saturday which in itself was a great day, but how I wish I'd been there for Liege & Lief!! Still, it was nice to listen to Richard Digence, Strawbs and Swarb playing fiddle like he'd never been away.

There must have been at least 100 recorders there, but nothing has surfaced yet.

What I want to know about this year's Cropredy is:

Who was the chap wearing a dress and using a banana phone?

Who was the guy in 16th century costume demonstrating a hurdy gurdy by the record tent?

Who was the girl wearing a basque & thong who asked me why said guy was winding up a gramophone inside said instrument? (Found out about the thong when she bent down to look inside the hurdy gurdy - ohmigawd!)

Who says Glastonbury has all the sights?

I curse the hideous automatic record level on video recorders, still it was nice to see. The clip of Richard Thompson when his mic failed is interesting - showing complete professionalism, despite being obviously furious!

Has this been a one-off special performance by Fairport Convention's 1969 line-up..... or do you think they will tour at some point??

*Hysterical laughter*

Come on then Ed...tell us how you discovered she was wearing a basque as well, we're all agog!
