Was this one of the Scottish antecedents to "Sweet Carnlough Bay? Or was that "Dundee"?

Any more info? I heard Paddy Tunney singing one called "The Banks of Dunmore" at the weekend. Sort of 19c. theological chat-up lines for people of differing religions. Certainly the first song I've heard with the word "transubstantiation" in it !

Mick Maloney and Robbie O'Connell recorded it together. I believe O'Connell may have written it.Dunmore is in Co. Waterford.

Road to Dunmore is on a Robbie O'Connell CD. called ``The Love of the Land ´´.According to the cover,he wrote it in 1987.Unfortunatly there's no texts in the cover ,but I can write them off by hand if no one else comes up with anything.

Greetings John.

THE ROAD TO DUNMORE
Words and music by Robbie O'Connell c.1987
As sung by Robbie O'Connell on "Clancy, O'Connell & Clancy"

1. I was walking the road to Dunmore
One evening as often I've done,
And my heart was as heavy as stone.
I was thinking of times that are gone,
When we walked arm in arm on the shore
And we watched the waves roll on the sea
Never thinking that there'd come a time
They'd be rolling between you and me.

2. And it's many's the tide now has turned
Since I stood all alone on the quay
And I watched as you waved your farewell
And you left a heart breaking in me;
But if I were a prince or a king
And had money and treasure in store,
I'd travel the whole world wide
And not rest 'til I'd found you once more.

3. And it's many's the morning I'd wait
For the letters you promised to send
And I counted the hours of each day
'Til we'd both be united again
And they say that in time love grows cold
And it fades like the morning dew
But time will not alter my mind
For I know that I can't forget you.

4. I have money enough for one glass
But maybe my credit will hold
For in memories I'm rich as a king
Though they can't warm a heart when it's cold
So I'll drink to the times that are past
And the days when we walked on the shore
And to you I will raise up my glass
For I know that I'll ne'er see you more.

Also on "The Love of the Land" (Green Linnet-GLCD 1097).
Greetings John.

Martin,
Did you say you heard Paddy Tunney recently? If he is still alive I would love to hear him sing. He is one of my favorites! What a thrill. Where was it? harp

Paddy is alive and (reasonably) well! He was performing at a small festival of traditional singing in Feakle, CO. Clare., at which he was presented with a special award for his contribution to traditional singing over the years. The voice is no longer what it used to be, of course, but the energy and spirit remain. Not sure what age he is - late seventies or so? I have his two books somewhere and must check.

HIs talent for controversy also remains - I might tell the story in the "song appropriatenes" thread!

Regards

p.s. Returning to the thread topic: if its Robbie O COnnell, the Dunmore is "Dunmore East", in Waterford, as Tom suggests earleir.

It is indeed Dunmore East.I could have typed in the cover notes yesterday but it was late and i was tired!
``The coast of County Waterford is among my favorite places in Ireland. The town of Dunmore East is the scene for this song of separation,a very familar topic in Irish songs.´´
That's all it says about the song on the cover.
I met Robbie about three years ago when he played at a little Irish pub in Oslo called ``Shanachie´´.He was with Liam Clancy and they played three evenings! This must have been in the autumn of 1995 when I think about it.I know this because I sent Lian a CD that I produced and that wasn't finished until November.

Liam and Robbie made a CD with Liam's son Dónal. It's called strangely enough ``Clancy,O'Connell & Clancy.´´
Recorded and mixed at Liam's studio -Ring,County Waterford.I met them all again at Skagen(Denmark) music festival where they were promoting this CD.
This is rambling on a bit...I guess I'm trying to show Robbie's connection with County Waterford, but then again ,maybe he comes from there originally?
Anybody else know the answer to that question??

Greetings John.

Does anyone know where I can get the lyrics and, if available, guitar chords to THE ROAD TO DUNMORE, as sung by Robbie O'Connell in the album CLANCY, O'CONNELL & CLANCY? I cannot find it in the mudcat/digital tradition data base or in any sheet music in the music stores in the Raleigh, NC, area. I would be grateful for any suggestions or help. Many thanks. John

@John Wood - Robbie O'Connell wrote the song and he is from Waterford. I used to work in The Black Rose (Roisín Dubh) in Boston back in the 80s and Robbie was a regular singer there. Loved hearing him sing. Great voice, sings from his heart. Sent me the chords for DADGAD too - very kind.

The lyrics are in this thread- still needing chords it seems. Here is a link to the song as sung by the composer. Perhaps that will entice someone to post chord suggestions. Road to Dunmore (Robbie O'Connell)- YouTube

I "sang" this one at the Getaway this past weekend. It's been a favorite for many years.

What a lovely song! Ultimate Guitar has posted chords for this song.

Mick Moloney and Eugene O'Donnell recorded this song on a Green Linnet record, called "Uncommon Bonds" (c) 1984, but also released on CD in 2007.
