Pick up a copy of The New Yorker when the time draws near (it's a weekly) and check out the Goings on About Town section near the front. Have fun.

If you come to the Chantey Sing at the Seaman's Church, Gus of Woodenships Music is usually there with a good sampling of his current stock of Maritime Music.

Connect with The New York Pinewoods Folk Music Society (check out their website). It has one of the best listings anywhere for folk music in the city-- you will be astounded at the listings!

They will mail you a free sample newsletter, and I suggest you join the group (special rate for out of towners) so you can attend one of their free to members concerts.

You'll have a great time, there's not a day that goes by in NYC where you can't hear folk music somewhere.

HiLo,
Which week in November will you be in NYC? There are already a number of things scheduled for November, and there will certainly be more in the coming weeks. Post another message and I'll list things for that week.

I'm rushing to get to an Irish session right now, so no time for blue clickys. But check the websites of Joe's Pub on Lafayette St and the World Music Institute, in addition to the Pinewoods site mentioned above. If you like Irish music, there will also be some events in November, so leave a note on this thread and I'll check back. If you can't find the sites, I'll post the links next time I'm on, if no one else beats me to it.

The best place to go for Folk music in New York City, is Ashville North Carolina...

Just kidding... sort of... check out what is up at the Sidewalk Cafe, they have Anti-folk performances, some of which is - I would argue, folk...

For concerts, get the current copy of Time Out New York when you arrive.

You can also search for music on their website - it says that Chris Smither and Sonny Landreth are appearing at Rockin' the River Cruises at Pier 83 tonight.

Ok, here are some things for starters. You probably should check back with these links as the dates get closer, to see if more events have been added, which is very likely.

Pinewoods is having their Eisteddfod festival 11/16-11/18. (See some of the comments above, and here's a direct link for the festival):

Lorcan, I do agree that Asheville is the best place to go to in New York City. Or at least, from New York City.

But southerners are always amazed at how much old timey/bluegrass/gospel/sacred harp, etc. is played up here- I wouldn't be surprised if there's more folk music here than anywhere else on the east coast .

Now if only we could get the Blue Ridge Mountains to move a little closer.

November 16-18 you should definitely come to Eisteddfod-NY, a whole weekend of traditional music with performers from Jean Ritchie to the Karelian Ensemble (Russo-Finnish border tradition) plus an open mike. See www.eisteddfod-ny.org. This is put on by the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club/Folk Music Society of New York. It is convenient to the subway and highway, and is in a neighborhood with amazing ethnic restaurants. Free admission for responsible volunteers. The Pinewoods Club is trying to provide housing for volunteers from out of town.
A week earlier the World Music Institute is putting on the Carolina Chocolate Drops at Symphony Space, and I hear that they are a terrific group of young old-time musicians.

Greetings:

I recently learned about two relatively new venues in New York City, one in Manhattan and the other in Brooklyn. And by "relatively new," I mean one is only a year old and the other has been around less than five years. So I went and checked both of them out, spoke with the program managers, and got myself and my some time singing partner Anne Price booked to play each. Neither is strictly a folk venue -- each is open to jazz, comedy, poetry, underground hip-hop, etc. -- but both are very "folk friendly." Beyond that, both are small, intimate houses. They have sound systems, but I doubt that they are necessary.

So what, you ask, are these places? The older and more established of the two is the Vox Pop. It's a cross between a cafe and bookstore, and it's located at 1022 Cortelyou Road, one block east of Coney Island Avenue, in the Ditmas Park section of Brooklyn.

The other is the Yippie Museum Cafe, and it's located at 9 Bleecker Street, between Elizabeth Street and the Bowery in the East Village section of Lower Manhattan.

The websites for the Vox Pop and the Yippie Museum Cafe are www.voxpopnet.net and www.yippiemuseum.org respectively.

Anne and I will be at the Vox Pop on Saturday, December 8, 2007, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. We will be at the Yippie Museum Cafe one week later, Saturday, December 15, from 8:00 to 10:00. By our choice, there will be no cover charge at either venue, but musicians' tips will certainly be appreciated.

Maybe we will see some Mudcatters there.

Greetings again!

I currently have three upcoming performances in New York City. One is in Brooklyn and the other two are in Manhattan.

• Wednesday, April 9, 2008. Eco-Fest. Kingsborough Community College Marine Academic Center Playhouse. Brooklyn, NY. 12:30-1:40 PM. Anne Price, Hillel Arnold, and I will be presenting a concert of songs by Woody Guthrie. Admission is free and the general public is welcome, but on-campus parking is limited to KCC students, faculty, and staff.

• Saturday, May 3, 2008. Peoples' Voice Cafe at the Workmen's Circle. 45 East 33rd Street, between Park and Madison Avenues. New York, NY. 8:00-10:30 PM. I will be sharing the evening with with my good buddy Joel Landy. First we will each do a 30-minute set. Then we will take a short break, after which we will come back and finish the rest of the evening alternating songs round robin style. Suggested admission: $12. Peoples' Voice Cafe or Workmen's Circle members: $9. TDF vouchers accepted. No one turned away for lack of money. For information, please visit the PVC website.

• Sunday, July 13, 2008. Bowery Poetry Club. 308 Bowery, between Houston and Bleecker Streets. New York, NY. 7:00-9:30 PM. I will be among the featured performers in the Eighth Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash. Formerly held at CB's 313 Gallery, the acoustic twin of CBGB/Omfug, the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash has become a major yearly event in New York's vibrant folk scene. The other featured performers this year will include Hillel Arnold, Jessica Feinbloom, Emma Graves, Joel Landy, Eric Levine, Anne Price, and Gina Tlamsa. Admission: $6
+ one drink minimum. Click here for BPC website.

Please take note: After more than a century, the Workmen's Circle has sold it's building at 45 East 33rd, and it must vacate by the close of business June 30, 2008. The Peoples' Voice Cafe will move to a new location in the fall, so by May 3 show with Joel Landy will the last time I get a chance to perform at this historic venue. Be there for old time's sake!
