19 Apr 99 - 12:07 PM (#71999) Subject: RE: mp3 From: Jon W. MP3 is a technology for compressing digitally recorded music without loss of sound quality - so instead of getting 10-20 songs on a CD you can get 150 or so and they still sound as good. I've only read about this so far, not evaluated the sound quality personally, but with the link above, I'll check it out when I'm home where my PC has a sound card. Of course compression also means much faster download times for getting music off the Internet or e-mail or whatever. I'm hoping that our beloved Mudcat Cafe will eventually become a prime MP3 site for folk/blues. I guess I should put my money where my mouth is. |
19 Apr 99 - 01:21 PM (#72029) Subject: RE: mp3 From: Max The Mudcat is soon to have quite an MP3 collection. Some will be free and others may cost a buck (for fundraising of course). The quality is fantastic. More to come.... |
19 Apr 99 - 01:42 PM (#72038) Subject: RE: mp3 From: Harald Sound fantastic. I´m itching to get more to know. Does that mean, the mudcat CD becomes obsolete ? We get all those songs and many more as MP3s ? |
19 Apr 99 - 03:36 PM (#72087) Subject: RE: mp3 From: Max No, the Mudcat CD will also and always be available too. Not everyone has the ability yet to deal with MP3's nor do we or will we ever negate those without even a computer. The Mudcat and Digitrad are not exclusive to the net or computers. |

20 Apr 99 - 12:07 PM (#72184) Subject: RE: mp3 From: Alan of Australia G'day, When you get to the mp3 site do a search for "folk", "celtic" as well as "ireland". Then follow the genres mainly. There's a lot of stuff there. MP3 is a form of "lossy" compression but its quality is extremely good, you can seldom hear the difference between it and the original when using the "near CD quality" parameters for encoding. Near CD quality compresses to better than 1/10 the original size, imagine over 11 hours of music on one CD ROM. Quality also depends on the encoder. Some are better than others. It's very controversial in the recording industry with concerns about it being used to illegally distribute music, although it seems to me that it's not the fault of the method if it gets used this way. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) recently tried in court to stop the sale of the Diamond Rio MP3 player. I understand they lost! Explore the mp3 site at www.mp3.com, you'll learn all you ever need to know, including the latest on software and hardware.

MP3 with WAV conversions
Best info and leads are found in the News Rooms. Midi appears to be dying quickly. |

Aside from "recording industry blow" there ain't much in the way of political discussions connected to MP3 info. Just good sound advice. |
23 Apr 99 - 07:36 AM (#72919) Subject: RE: mp3 From: katlaughing From what I've read on the mp3 site, it gives an artist a direct way of producing and/or marketing the cd's they already have and getting them into the hands/computers of their followers, without any "middle persons" or the need for lots of expensive equipment. And I understand it is really upsetting ASCAP etc. because it leaves them totally out of the equation. Max thatis really exciting to hear! Harald, if pure phoak isn't "digital", how do all those pickers work those strings?***BIG GRIN*** katlaughing |

"Intertrust gets kudos for mailing the Rio, which is pretty much the only game in town right now," Mr. Mooradian (analyst Jupitor Research, New York) said, "Does this mean the war is over? Of course not."
Joe Jennings, an Intertrust senior vice presidnet, said his company hopes to make its technologies copatible with others that emerge as industry standards, such as a new storage format from Microsoft Corp. He added, however, that "MP3 is going to be with us for a long, long time."

I can't wait until the really nice portable MP3 players are available on the market for really low prices. the prices are already coming down and the capacities are going up.

The file sizes for the music look immense -Most of us aren't on ADSL yet, and these tracks would take the rest of your life to download. You would get a lot fewer onto a CDROM as well, though I expect they sound good. Cheers |
31 Mar 01 - 07:31 PM (#430278) Subject: RE: mp3 From: Brendy Audio Catalyst 2.1 is the MP3 encoder that comes with the Xingtech player. It also converts .wav to .mp3, and vice versa. at 128 kbps and above (Cd quality) Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge 5 is an excellent two-track wav editor; LP's can be recorded through the 'Line-in' function on your soundcard, as can cassette tapes. And sure...if you look hard enough, you might be able to find a serial number that works .....Or you could just go and buy it.... But both these programmes - which I bought, do their jobs excellently, IMO. B. |
01 Apr 01 - 10:55 AM (#430546) Subject: RE: mp3 From: reggie miles Wow, am I at a loss here with all this recording geekspeak. Somebody tell me it's easier than it sounds to do all of this. I want to transfer my already recorded cd material to my computer or a website or maybe even one of these sites mentioned above where folks can listen and have a chance to contact me or buy some of my recordings. Do I need a new or special soundcard? Perhaps a thread dedicated to this topic would be appropriate. |
02 Apr 01 - 07:47 AM (#431075) Subject: RE: mp3 From: Brendy Audio Catalyst is an excellent CD ripper, Reggie. That means it will take your CD tracks, and one by one transfer them to your hard disk in .wav, .mp3, or .wma format. There are a few other formats it covers as well. So get Audio Catalyst or the like; if you do have a CD burner on your computer, the main burning programme may well have that capacity. I know that NTI CD Maker Pro includes the facility in their package, as I think, does Nero Burning Rom 5. You then upload your MP3's onto your website, or internet storage space. After that, it's down to marketing. But there have been a few threads already on this subject. B. |
