Hi,

This is a message to a certain Les Sullivan. I am a student on the folk and traditional music degree in Newcastle studying guitar and voice. I was just wondering if i could have permission to record a version of you're song "Five Pounds" and put it on my myspace. A friend of mine Dave Auld used to sing it, may i congratulate you on an excellent song!!!!

Am sure Les will drop by soon, he pops in as Guest, Frog from time to time.

If you see Dave Auld, please say Hi from me, haven't heard him sing for ages....

Actually, on second thoughts, PM Herga Kitty instead. She comes on here more often.

Well he used to get around the clubs on the North Western fringes of London. Haven't seen him for a while, but then again I haven't been around much either. Wait a mo' - maybe Breezy will be able help.

We popped. Its already on Les' Myspace but if you want to record it that's fine as long as he's credited with writing it. Also do you want to be his "FRIEND" on Myspace, the extra words are there too. He has written an extra verse as HergaKitty and Derek said it was too short. Email to Les@howlingtoad.wanadoo.co.uk and we'd be delighted to speak to you.

sorry Les says I should have added we'll be in Fylde next week. He's playing the Steamer on Wednesday night and Victoria on Friday night as part of the festival should you be around.

Quite right - Les will be at Fylde on 29th and 31st August - and we've cancelled everything else to make sure we're at both events...   especially the 31st August :0)

CU you next week at Fylde

thank you for cancelling everything else. Les has decided to buy a new string for his guitar in your honour but can't decide if it should be one of the thick ones or one of the thin ones.

I have checked my piggy bank and it contains the following ..thirty eight pence three buttons one threepenny bit and a 1942 anti gas dressing so I guess ill have to use the same old strings plus ca change!   see you soon Les.

Les, don't worry about strings - I'm boiling you up a set of my old ones - one careful owner less than 100,000 plucks (kept for such an emergency) - thick and thin!

See you Wednesday - even buy you a pint - so bring the anti gas dressing :0)

Derek and I sang Five Pounds in the Station Inn at Whitby, with additional third verse, and Sarah Morgan asked us who wrote it because she enjoyed hearing it....

PS I think Dave Auld got his version from my recording with MCP (Dark the Day), in which case the words (especially for the last verse) will be different from the version recorded by Les on Echoes of Mingulay.
