How many of you Catfolk are having to deal with like, ahhhhhh, 12 Kbps or less??? Prolly none... I've had it!!! I tired to forward an email that had 3 lusy danged piccures in in and it took literally hours... ....so I said to myself, "Self, this sucks... You gotta move on to the millenium and thus... ...satillite innernet... I've read up on Wild Blue and it sounds purdy okay from what I 've learnt but... ...anyone have any other ideas, other that shootin' myself or my computer or both??? Bobert |

Can't advise about your local providers, but Broadband here is still not really 'affordable'. "email that had 3 lusy danged piccures" The best quick advice is to use an image edit prog to chop down the filesizes of those pics... unless you want to paste up billboard size photos in high res... Some 'sattellite connections' used to still use a dialup to SEND info, so unless you have an 'uplink' you can't send stuff to the sattellite - their advantage was a high DOWNLOAD speed - from the eye in the sky... So I don't know how much extra speed access you would get in trying to SEND large emails. |

If not, satellite broadband is perfectly workable. If you can afford it you might want to get two dishes instead of just one, to provide you with fail-safe redundancy. From: open mike i settled on wild blue -- out here in the country the only wires that run out here are barbed wires! we don't need no stinkin' DSL cable. and won't get it for ages, any way... i found 3 main providers...Wild Blue..Hughes--thru Direct t.v. (D.T.V.) Directway..and Starband. the wild blue service here is carried by Got Sky. it is amazing to have over 100 KBS... not maga bytes but Kilo bytes.. compared to 14.4 or 28.8 when i was lucky before. if you want me to refer you to them, we could both get a discount, i think! if so pm me with your e-mail addy. Laurel i now do not need the extra phone line....and can unplug that.. our lines here are so ancient...PAR GAin..can't even get caller I.D. |

The upload half of the conversation only carries enough traffic to send out requests for HTTP pages, or e-mail, lightweight mostly. Each service level entails a maximum allowable amount of data per month that can be downloaded and uploaded. If a customer goes beyond that amount his service is slowed down to something equivalent to a slow dial-up connection. This is known as "getting fapped". The major bones of contention seem to be: (1) Customers don't have access to up-to-the-minute usage data so they can get fapped unexpectedly. (2) Once one has been fapped and done the required amount of penance, it sometimes takes several calls to customer service to get them to "flip the switch" back to sattelite speed. |

From: Ebbie It always surprises me to be reminded that there are many places in the US- and in the world - where anything faster than dialup is not yet available. Kind of like electricity up to the mid1950s. There were areas that unless you lived within a stated measure of distance from an existing electric line you couldn't get it. And I wouldn't have to drive more than 30 km. to reach a long stretch of paved road where electricity is not available. |

He's a computer geek so he was able to solve them. DishNetwork provides satellite, but you have to be out in the middle of nowhere to be eligible for it--something about how they compete with the local closer service. Maybe you should set up your own satellite system. I've heard about them being set up in the mountains of West Virginia, it was on an NPR program probably in the last 24 months. It's not that expensive to set up and then provide access for your neighbors. SRS |
