Craig; Morgan; Robson
Thursday, October 11
7PM (late start for those who come from work)
Buffet/Beverages/Concert

I am putting this up early so you can save the date. Bios and some info:

In the Autumn of 2003, three singers, rich in repertoire and musical experience, decided to combine their talents as an a-capella harmony trio. Those singers were Moira Craig, Sarah Morgan, and Carolyn Robson. Under the billing Craig; Morgan; Robson they have been captivating audiences in the UK and America, earning accolades such as "A joy to the ear" and "A harmony master-class". Their debut CD, "Peppers and Tomatoes"has been hailed as "a gem of an album" Mick Peat, BBC Radio in the Midlands
Together, Craig; Morgan; Robson bring a new dimension to the art of a-capella singing. They weave beguiling harmonies around material from the British tradition and beyond with "an effortless range and variety unheard in folk music for many years" (Folk London). Timeless songs of love and longing rub shoulders with compelling contemporary songs, and passionate, dramatic ballads take their place alongside a lilting Shetland melody or a stirring hymn from the Ozark mountains. The occasional solo song only adds to the variety of their overall performance. Here is a trio in which three distinctively different voices melt into one another to create a sound which is all their own. "True tradition bearers" (Living Tradition).

Sounds like a wonderful evening, but highly unlikely for us. I expect to be going back to work that week and Linn will have to be hustling ads on Friday to send to the printer the following Monday. Of course, we could win the lottery between now and then...

And I'm especially disappointed because I've got one of Carolyn Robson's CDs and would LOVE to hear her in person.

Who knows what will happen 'twixt then and now, though...it's on my calendar just in case.

Just overdosed on their singing at 3 concerts at Whitby folk festival - still playing both CDs constantly - check out " Crossing the Bar" on the stranded CD as well as "Minnie of Shirvas Cradle song" on Peppers and Tomatoes - absolutely breathtaking harmonies and lyrics (Tennyson did have a way with words)

This may be the one I really finally get to. Saw them in England 3 years ago. They are wonderful individually as well as together. I'll be in Maine at the time but have to be at a conference in Chelmsford, MA at 8am on Fri.! Not too bad a drive. What a way to end a vacation. Sure hope it works this time.

Mary, do you know whether they'll have copies of songbooks as well as cds? I'm also wondering what the chances might be of arranging a workshop for our folk chorus members up here. Do you know anything more about their schedule for that week. It's probably to late to schedule anything, but it's worth asking!

Maeve, we'll be at Sue and Charlie West's (York) on Tuesday 9th and then driving to sinsulls the next day, and her sing is on Thursday 11th as you know. we were planning to head back to Boston on Friday 12th during the day. Whereabouts are you? If Friday is a holiday (as I've been told) might something be possible that day - or maybe Wednesday or Friday evenings - it all depends on geography! Send me a pm or jsut reply to this note - I'mm away now till Sunday evening but will check then and get back to you.

Mary-

We're going to have to give this one a pass reluctantly. Weekday evenings are particularly hard for Judy (she seldom leaves work before 6 pm), compounded with the fact that we live far out of town. We also have got a lot more recording and editing to do before leaving for Australia at the end of October, not to mention the packing.

We will be joining your song party later in the month when Two Black Sheep and a Stallon will be making an appearance, assuming their delicate voices survive the Press Room sea music session the previous Saturday night.

Cheerily,

Looks like you've got us on the list for Thursday -- not sure whether Tom PMed you or not. I definitely can't do a week night in Portland that late in my production cycle (damned real estate magazine!), although we're planning on making the shorter hike to the West's in York to see/hear them a few days earlier in the week.

There's another bed for someone else!

The weatherpersons of Maine are looking forward to the "nor'easter" they see hitting the state Thursday through Saturday or so, but even they aren't likely to get the real snow to go much beyond hill country.

I'm looking forward to a night of music and to meeting those I didn't the last time I braved the Big City (during the 1/2 concert I was able to enjoy until the snow hit)such as yourself, TRUBRIT, and to visit with those unfortunate few who already know me a bit. Moira sang it while a huge bar of chocolate made the rounds and she ended up on knees begging for it.
Killed the whole "reserved" Brit persona.
This has been a very special evening. Brilliant music, magical harmonies and a house filled with good people sharing. Two sets of about 50 minutes each followed by a disorganized sing around where CMR performed any request that came from the floor. Jeri sang two new songs - one in honor of Seamus' run in with a skunk. The other, a beautiful tune and moving lyrics about life/death at sea. CMR took down the lyrics, musical notation and a recording. Someone has to record Jeri's stuff! It is too good to go unnoticed.
Of course Alice misbehaved and Ashra stole food but I think Kendall did too. Speaking of the Captain - he played while we all sang and told stories and jokes. He was his old self.
Maeve (Holly) was here. She and I picked apples barefoot. Great fun. She has a beautiful voice and added to the festivities. We all went home with assorted farm produce and plants. "Hens and CHickens" will fill my garden next year.
Malcolm sang a song that Micca is going to want - a dyslexic take on the Sailor's Alphabet. Hilarious!
Tami joined me in "The Baggage Coach Ahead", not literally. And she sang a Norwegian lullaby in honor of the Shetland Islands - long story.
Wonder of wonders! Jason sings loud and clear.
This entire evening was a pleasure.
Thank you all for a wonderful evening. Now, to bed in a Nor'Easter.

These folks are a delight to have around. Good material and so well done. If I had to choose one word to describe their singing it would be "mellifluous".
If I wasn't hung over I'd have more to say besides, it was worth it.

Poor Kendall is suffering this morning. Never mind, after a nice plate of eggs he'll be fine (I think).

What a wonderful evening. If you weren't there you missed a real treat. These ladies are SO good! They did a Mike O'Connor song that I have to learn and so many other good ones it is impossible to list. We bought both the CDs and I'm sure that we will be playing them a lot.

I agree with Mary about Jeri's songs. We should get her singing them more often - they need to have a wider audience.

Thanks about the songs. I literally just wrote the serious one, and I'm sure it has rough bits. If CMR sing it (which would cause some serious chuffage on my part), I'm sure they can smooth them out.

I'm glad Maeve made it. It have been bad to have missed this concert, but we would have missed Maeve and her singing.

What a wonderful evening! I could close my eyes and get happily lost in the exquisite harmonies of perfectly blended voices singing tasty arrangements.

I need more sleep...

I hated to go home last night, but the wee Bandit was home alone and needed out. So to console myself, I'm listening to my two new CDs.

Just foundout that Malcolm wrote the parody of King of Rome. Damn! It would have been fun to hear that from the man himself.

Yeah Jeri That one, he calls it "the cat that roamed" and he also wrote
"Oh No not the fields of Athenry
If I hear it one more time
I think I'll cry
they should ban the bloody thing
there are better soongs to sing
I'm so fed up with the fields of Athenry"

Thanks to Saro, Moira, and Caroline for stunning music the other night, and to Jacqui and Sinsull for being clever and kind enough to help me find a way to hear the music and generate funds to pay at the same time. Everyone- I do so appreciate the encouragement, warm welcome, and good company. Thanks to TRUBIT and her TRUELOVE for their hospitality.

If you couldn't come to hear these delightful and talented musicians, do buy yourself both cds and the songbook at their website. You need their music, and we want them to come back soon!

And Sinsull, the yellow apples are particularly good once you get past the skin. Thanks again!

LOL
Pre-concert barefoot apple picking with Maeve (Holly) was a welcome break from the kitchen. So there's hope for my pathetic apple trees?

For me, this was the most enjoyable evening ever. The music was superb, the performers soooo gracious and talented and generous and...you get the picture. Holly cleared my yard of apples and shed of the long lingering organ pipes then sang so sweetly I could have cried. Kendall told his stories with that wonderful blue eyes twinkling/ dimpled grin thing he does. Jacqui was healthy enough to sing and cook breakfast. Jeri shared her new song with an audience that is begging her to record. Tami joined me in The Baggage Coach Ahead (not literally) - where did that come from, lady? Jason sang. Deborah was floating on air with the magic of the evening.

My only regret is that more couldn't attend.
Mary

Actually Jason sang very well. It's a shame that he's so shy - he would be a real asset to any gathering.

A smaal, but selevt gathering. Those who weren't there really did miss out.

Small and select; as it was.

I am looking forward to (I hope) returning for the upcoming song circle (see separate thread) in daylight! Perhaps Jeri will sing her new "serious" song for us once again. I'd love it if she is willing.

Yes, Mary, the apple trees certainly can be made much nicer. We enjoyed an apple salad today at lunch using one of your yellow delicious type apples with one of our red-fleshed "hidden Rose" aka "Airie" apples. Oh, MY!

And a friend has PMed me with the offer to Tell All regarding the case of the headless statue, so I'll have statue, head, and provenance ready for Antiques Roadshow. By the way, we've discovered that one can play the newly cleaned organ pipes like a one-note recorder. What fun we'll have! Thank you once again.

Oh no! I wish you had kept that to yourself. Linn has about 50 very portable sized pipes. Not good.

Maeve -- you were so very welcome......it is nice to have someone else in the house. Three of us rattling around in this house is just plain silly but I can't bring myself of downsize -- just love this house.........
