BS: Hawkers Lump.....

28 Aug 07 - 07:35 PM (#2135646)
Subject: BS: Hawkers Lump.....
From: Hawker

Hi, Some of you who were at the Bude Folk festival in may were there when I discovered a large lump on my thigh. After leaving it for a few weeks to see if it went away, I visited my doctor, who, I thought, would suggest that it was a lipoma (fatty lump). Apparently it was too deep for a lipoma, is not a knot in the muscle and an Orthopaedics specialist has ruled out it being connected to my knee, hip (arthritis) and achiles problems associated with that leg. I have been x-rayed, and am now waiting for an MRI scan and some blood tests. I have been referred to another hospital with a unit that deals with lumps and have been told that it will be removed, as it is so large. its about 3" in diameter. It is not painful and I am not at present too worried. I will keep you posted as to what happens next, though when I had a TIA last year, it took 7 months to get the MRI scan done, and I only found out for sure that it was a TIA when I finally got the results in July (14 months after) !!!!!
Dont hold your breath!
Cheers, lucy

What's a TIA, Lucy? (I first wrote "Lucky"- good omen, don't you think?)

Anyway, I wish you the best of possible outcomes.

TIA = Transient Ischemic Attack = Little blod clots in the brain = little strokes.

Subject: RE: BS: Hawkers Lump.....
From: Hawker

Transient Ischaemic Attack - a mini stroke I have a very small part of my left frontal lobe missing as it was starved of blood by a tiny clot. it coased a loss o inteligable speech for a few minutes and in the longer term I have occasional trouble finding the right word, though most of the time I'm OK, its when I am tired it is more noticable, and I lost the use of my hands, they felt like they had pork sausages for fingers and I could not pick things up for a couple of days. playing the harp helped get them moving. Its like a warning and Yes I did take heed. Have lost almost a stone since beginning of July, which will help when they cut the lump out too.
I feel lucky, lets hope I'm right!
Cheers, Lucy

Got all my good thoughts Lucy! Don't worry anymore than is absolutely necessary 'cause it don't do ya' no good. Have a laugh instead.....or at least try. I should have been dead ten years ago but this place, a great wife, and a warped sense of humor, have kicked ass over whatever else was going on.

My husband had just such a lump in his calf. We feared cancer, but his surgeon assured us that had it been cancer, he would have been in severe pain. The surgeon thought it would prove to be a benign tumor, but when surgery was actually performed later, it turned out to be a large blood clot -- probably stemming from some injury to that part of his leg that he had long since forgotten about.

A possibility for you?

It was easy to remove, and the only worry was what would have happened had it started to break up -- which thank God it hadn't.

Hi Lucy from Roger and Annie. Yes, I remember touching it, but that was months ago. I guess you have been too busy worrying about the other Hawker, who we hope is better now. I think a private scan is a good idea - wonder if the musician next door might treat you. I think they cost about £650 pounds. We'll ring you soon.

Lucy, I think you've had a rough 2007. The Rx for right now: have a relaxing weekend, eat well, (go get that pint that was offered!), get enough sleep, and you'll feel fine when you go in for your results. Get this treated soon and then put 2007 behind you.

Stay calm, take one day at a time, and throw yourself wholeheartedly into your Secret Santa plotting. Something that provides a good, positive distraction will be welcome!

Take care,

Lucy, I suspect you're about to make medical history - it's always been obvious that you have too much love for your fellow beings for it all to be held in one heart! They are going to find that you have a special second one for keeping all that love in. By the time everybody has returned to you all the love, good wishes and blessings that you have given out over the years - you'll need another!

Seriously though, Jack and I (and Zak) are holding you in our thoughts and hearts and sending you love and blessings.

Thank you all for your good energy and kind thoughts, they really make this a special place to be. The scan pictures were rather like looking at a slice of gamon! Well I have a leg and it has a lump that much is certain. It has not got its own blood supply (the lump that is!), which I am told is good, the specialist told me that he thinks that it is, after all that, a lipoma, but he cannot be sure without removing it and sending it to pathgology to have it tested. I am therefore having it removed some time in the next 3 months. If my secret santa is listening, mobility aids required around Christmas!!!!! ......Ooooh! theres a positive!! Christmas and........Oh! what a shame..... I won't be able to drive.............guess who'll be doing the drinking then!!!!!!! Tee Hee (sorry KB ;0))
Feeling a lot more positive today, and Mum seems to be coping better today too, so perhaps that is light I see at the end of the tunnel!
Gracious thanks to you all for your support, it really has meant a lot to me ....... and thanks for all the pms too. What would I do without you?

Why do they let people stew for a week or two when the news isn't
as bad as it could be? A simple phone call that said 'you shouldn't
worry, it's probably okay, we'll talk about it more at the appointment'
would be the decent thing to do.

I sometimes think that medical professionals get a power surge out

I agree with you, Greg B. Like just about everything else it must emanate from the top. If the top echelon mandates that they *will* distinguish themselves by routinely looking for ways - and implementing them - to reduce the anxiety among those they are serving, the whole office will follow through. If not, it has to be up to individuals- and individuals often adhere to the party line. Mustn't rock the boat, you know.

I remember a restaurant years ago where staff and service were slow, indifferent and inaccurate. When I met the manager I wasn't surprised at the quality of the service.

Three probably is a field of expertise where training in the *art* of service is taught but I wish more people were listening.

Lucy, you must be a very rare pirate not to have enough rum in that game! Most of us have way too much for what we need. Sooner or later you will too. I have a few parrots - they are very pretty, but useless. A lot of that booty is useless in fact.

BUGGER BUGGER BUGGER
I may not be having my op, following a severe angina attack on Wednesday night, which the doc thinks MAY have been a slight heart attack (am awaiting the troponin test results) I may not now be fit enough for surgery. I am not hospitalised and am resting quietly in between doing things I shouldn't be!
Get test results on Monday.
Cheers, Lucy

Now, Lucy, this just won't do! In the whole scheme of things, from what you have posted so far, the lump is small potatoes, so take care of yourself, breathe deep, and accept gracefully all hugs that come your way.

And here is another {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{hug}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} coming at you.

Catch!

Good news all, Troponin levels OK and ECG shows no change from last month, so it was just a BAD angina attack, no harm has been done to the old ticker. Hopefully, I will still be able to have the op, though the doc is not sure if they will, but at least the rest of me is OK!
Cheers and thank you so much for the support and good wishes, it really means a lot.

Hi Sue,
The Op has been re-scheduled for Thursday 20th December I had the pre op check and ecg on Friday and they seem OK to go ahead.......... unless my bed is needed! I have to be in Barnstaple hospital by 0800 that morning and though they couldn't give me the exact time of my op, they say I should be able to go home by about 2pm! They also couldn't tell me whether it would be a keyhole or a big cut, as she said they didn't know until they got in there how much they would need to take out - I suggested a couple of stone would suit me fine, but they didn't seem to appreciate my humour!
Thanks for asking!
Cheers, Lucy

Hi Lucy

I said the very samewords a couple of years ago when I had a growth on my ovary. I also expected to come out 2st lighter. Buggerme it the lump was only the size of a grapefruit and was made totally of fresh air and nasties and weighed nothing. No justice. Footsies up for you over Christmas, take care ma love. best stay sat down incse you spill the wine!
Love

Nice article in the paper about the Bude Folk Club today, Lucy!   I'll buy you a pint of Doom if you get to The Tree some time. Only you, mind - there is a sub-prime crisis on, you know!

Yep sorry folks, have to wait another week for the dreaded op, but that gives me a week more shopping!
No Jillie I am NOT organised at all, haven't even done my cards yet! Life has been a frustrating pickle recently and I am in 2 steps forward and one back mode at the moment!
Steve! Finally got let out of my padded cell and went to the tree last Friday - My how you've changed! You looked reamarkably like Harry McC LOL! Tree fellers were playing and not 3 in a Bush! Trust me to go on the wrong night! I have to suffer the delectation of a Budehaven cabaret evening tonight I am afraid, so wont be able to make it. Come to the folk Club Christmas party on 23rd, I promise you its not cliquey or stuyffy, we are there to share and have a good time.
Cheers, Lucy

Well I am home and lump free, I have a 6 inch scar on my right thigh now - look like a real pirate! Its bloody sore, lumpy had gone deep and down the side of my thigh as well as through the muscle, so the surgeon had to cut through muscle and haul me about a bit. He had hoped to make a 1 inch incision, but ended up having to make a big hole to dig it all out, anyway lumpy is no more and looked OK though it has gone off to the lab to be certain.
I am feet up and not enjoying being unable to do anything!
Cheers, Lucy

bummer, I hope the pain goes soon so you can enjoy your holiday by doing holiday stuff.

but when the scar has healed you could get it tattooed. I once saw a pic of a mastectomy scar with a trail of flowers around it! You could get a skull & 1 crossbone around yours.

sandra (well, it is the silly season)

Ouch! Take it as easy as oyu can, Lucy, to let it heal up well and fast.

As to tattoos...I always swore I'd get a zipper tattoo if they ever opened my chest for heart surgery. Now that I have the scar, I could get it, but the skin is so tender and it is so close to the bone, I think it would hurt way too much for this gal. Maybe I could get more flowers around it, connecting to the ones on the right side which I've had for years. Still, a zipper would be funny silly!:-)

Being a pirate is all fun and games, until somebody loses a lump...

Yer going to have to make up some sort of story about the scar,
now, something more vivid than "my body rebelled against itself
and grew something that didn't belong."

Did you get to see the thing? Did it perhaps have little feet,
hands, and a head? An alien perhaps? Or perhaps the ultimate in
ectopic pregnancies?

So glad it all went well Lucy. I like the tattoo idea - might try the zipper for my abdominal scar - seems to be the favourite place for opening me up.

Take it easy, rest up and I'm sure that you can find plenty to put your talents to whilst you're off your feet me love.

So glad to hear it's all over Lucy, we're all breathing sighs of relief for you!!! Sounds like the surgeon did a 'proper job' to make sure the lump has gone completely, what a good Man!!

Now you're really going to have to behave yourself & rest up, have you got enough slaves around? I'd gladly pop down & help to pamper you for a few days if there's a rota going!!!

Love & Hugs & still thinking positive thoughts for your recovery,
