BS: Secret Santa Time for 2007!!!

30 Aug 07 - 04:36 AM (#2136681)
Subject: BS: Secret Santa Time for 2007!!!
From: Liz the Squeak

The festivals are tailing off, festive cards have been on sale in the shops for a couple of weeks (coming just after the 'Back to School' offers that appeared before the children had broken up from school...), leaves and berries are turning red, the sloe gin is on standby and my hair needs trimming - all this means it's Secret Santa Time!!

If you want to sign up for Secret Santa, you have until SEPTEMBER 30TH 2007 to send me a PM with your postal name, postal address including country and postcode (zip code) and posting preference* to be entered into the annual melee that is the Secret Santa Draw.

*tell me if you want an overseas or only your own continent/hemisphere.

RULES:
Gifts can be hand made or bought.
There is no price limit but we suggest a cost of around £10/$20 - A CD can be bought for this amount.
What I say goes. I'm in charge but not responsible. I'll act as courier and go-between but I'm not responsible. I don't care if you get the same Santee - that's half the fun!

SUGGESTIONS:
Something from your local area or a CD you were involved in.
Something you've made yourself.
Lots of little presents are often more fun than one big one.
Tease your Santee with clues and obfuscation.
Food regulations can vary between States and Continents so check before you post anything - no garlic sausages to Australia please, it upsets the koalas.

Joe has assured me that anonymous posting on Santa threads will not be treated as naughty, unless it's a Spam attack or someone being totally out of order. Just be consistant in your use of pseudonym.

Let the games begin!!

as GUEST,Scrooge said last year

"it is threads like this, and people like you, that give the encouragement (if any is necessary) to the absurd commercialism of Christmas, so that it is 'in our face' for *4 damned months* of the year.

Stop it! "

Just to reiterate (there's a word for a Thursday lunchtime...)

Even if you have sent me details every year for the past 3 (is that really how long I've been doing this???), even if you haven't moved off the couch, let alone out of the house, you MUST PM YOUR POSTAL ADDRESS TO ME AGAIN!

Otherwise I won't know where to send the begging letters.

As for commercialism - I don't like the way Christmas has become commercial either, but sometimes it pays to be prepared. The Secret Santa starts this early so people can cut down on postage by using the Getaway attendees as couriers, take advantage of cheaper rate autumnal travelling and post early so the poor postal workers aren't innundated with garlic sausage and disgruntled koalas.

There was no public revelation of Santas but if you wish, I can discretely inform you as to who you should have had.

Good! Great minds think alike, Liz! Just this morning I was thinking I needed to start a thread about Secret Santa early shipping and the pleasures of finding a variety of interesting, oddball, and easily shipped items for my (or your) Santee.

Fall is almost in the air here, it is in the quality of the light. And I have already seen holiday displays (okay, they were left-over plants at the nursery from last year, but they were out where I could see them!)

Let the games begin! I'll send my PM pronto, Liz.

Ah... we have this every year - Admittedly I did start this a few days earlier than normal because I'm going to be away from a computer for a while... but there's no reason to piss on other people's chips just because you don't like to hear about Christmas. If you don't want to see it, don't open the threads about it. Especially don't open them if all you're going to do is whine about it getting earlier every year.

Go start your own thread and whine in that, but this one usually gives pleasure to a lot of people, stay out of it please.

There is a department store here that used to be called Foley's (now it is part of Macy's) that I used to visit because they had beautiful furniture and kitchen stuff (that I couldn't afford, but I'd walk around the mall with my toddler getting exercise and looking. There was an antique huge Japanese black lacquer screen in their furniture deptartment that I adored and would visit whenever I was out there.) They always set up a discrete corner of the store with holiday stuff right after Labor Day (early Sept. in the US) because they had a few customers who shopped early and mailed stuff overseas. That was enough to get the creative juices flowing, gave me time to think of small things I could make at home with my daughter (and then my son, when he came along) or items I liked I'd save for or go get on the day after christmas for half price. I don't care for the massive displays of ornaments and such, they all blend together and are just too much.

CapriUni - this is a good time of year, if you are anywhere near a tourist area, to pick up local stuff, tacky or otherwise, that might be good for the Secret Santa gig.

We're lucky in Maine - there's always lots of lobster and moose stuff at good prices, so I can make sure the package is full and interesting!

Tosted marshmallows are, indeed, a strong object lesson in patience, and sometimes dire consequences of seeking instant gratification.

My memories of toatsed marshmallows include a lot of blowing cooling breaths while holding the stick... And occasionally, gingerly, testing the marshmallow with my fingers, to see if they're safe to pop in my mouth, first.

Have you ever had s'mores, Liz? you'd liked those, I think, and you need toested marshmallows for that.

(or are s'mores a solely American thing? -- iirc correctly, they were invented by our Girl Scouts)

Just come back to the US from a UK trip where for the second straight year, I've actually met up with my Santa and Santee in person. I stayed, quite enjoyably, at the homes of both. This is a good thing to build lasting friendships, and I shall continue and hope that great people and good hint ideas keep coming up to continue having as much fun as I've had fun doing it the last two years.

Jaqui --

Hmmmm.... if I get a santee from Britain, then, I might just include a box of graham crackers, for a "taste of America."

Too bad you can't get taste clips when you do an internet search... I could look up pictures of Digestive Biscuits, but that's not really relevent information...

Snuffy --

Whenever American companies come up with a "flavor" for a breakfast cereal, they generally put in one part flavor to ten parts sugar.

Severn: This is a good thing to build lasting friendships, and I shall continue and hope that great people and good hint ideas keep coming up to continue having as much fun as I've had fun doing it the last two years.

(Of course, whatever we first taste as adults rarely measures up to the ones we enjoyed in childhood-- nostalgia enhances every flavor).

If a person (such as myself) forgets to specifiy a preference for foreign or domestic Santee, do you read that as "no preference"? (or do you want "no preference" spelled out?

Desert dancer - you may sign up as one but you need to stipulate whether you are to be classed as one person or two. One person means you'll get something between you and send out one gift. Two people means you get a gift each from different people and send two out. Please confirm in a PM to me.

This from the other thread, on food imports into the US:

US Customs says:

If you are a private individual who wishes to send beverage and food items to the U.S., you should be aware that some items are highly restricted, particularly food items with meat products, including soup mixes, bullion, sausages, tinned meats, etc., and fresh produce. As a general rule, candies, condiments, spices, coffee and teas that are commercially packaged are ok, however bulk teas or spices, etc. are subject to inspection and if they are found to have insects, they may be seized and destroyed.

It might be helpful if someone could post similar rules for the UK, Oz and Canada.

Australian import info from Quarantine service, Dept of Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing

==============
enquiry -

my British & American friends were asking if they can send sweets or commercial biscuits/cakes as presents. I've tried searching AusPost, Customs & AQIS sites and can't find anything relevant to small presents, just large commercial shipments and forbidden & dangerous items.

sandra

answer -

Thank you for contacting the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service.

An Import Permit is not required.

Cooked cakes, biscuits, puddings (puddings with suet are prohibited) mailed to Australia that are shelf stable and do not require refrigeration to retain their freshness are all allowed by quarantine, subject to inspection on arrival.

Please Note: Biscuits and cakes containing custard or dairy based fillings that have been cooked with the cake (excluding cheesecakes, mooncakes, dairy puddings or vanilla slices) must be shelf stable to be exempt from quarantine. Import conditions for these products are listed under the ICON case "Dairy products excluding cheese - Uncanned" and "Dairy products excluding cheese - Canned".

There is a weight limit for food items of 10kg per consignment.

Information regarding import conditions for specific products can be found using AQIS's Import Conditions Database (ICON). ICON is a simple and convenient way to access information about Australian import conditions for many thousands of commodities. ICON can be used to determine if a commodity intended for export to Australia needs a quarantine permit, mandatory treatment or if there are any other quarantine requirements. ICON can be accessed via the internet at the following address http://www.aqis.gov.au/icon.

sorry, chocoholics, you can't get more than 10kg of chocolate into Oz. Tho if your Santa is wonderfully kind they might send a second parcel!

I have PMed you Liz

I suggest that if you get a Santee in OZ that you order from an OZ business if you wish tyo send scrummy chocolates and/or other foodstuffs.

I had a santee in UK twice and both times I ordered giufts from a UK seller of wines and spirits (Drinkon) which worked out well. I also sent stuff from home which didn't always work out. I sent some snack foods to UK last year that went missing forever and ever. (tortilla chips and jars of salsa)

Chocolates, clothing, CDs and other nonperishables all went to the UK from the USA without incident in the past

Hope that helps.

For some of us this Year ( what with this being the big 007 event) Secret Santa manouvers will be a totally covert operation. The presents from these particular kinds of Secret Agent Santas will suddenly appear at their top secret destinations in a stealth like manner.

You may think there are only 43 Secret Santa Candidates but can you be sure Moneypenny?

Covert usually means they'll be doing it in cognito - wherever that may be.

When the time comes for Secret Santa Candidate to switch from Giver to Receiver I am positive that they will be very grateful and down right vocal about their gift and for the thought behind the present their own Secret Santa Candidate bestows apon them.

In the next few days, you'll get a PM with the name, address and secret identity of your Santa. Share with no-one except your immediate family (unless, by some fluke, you've been allocated your immediate family... don't laugh, it happened once!), and don't even share with them if they can't keep it buttoned!

Post lots of hints in the threads and enjoy the silliness that starts around October 5th...
