Mark put the names of the composers at the end of the song above (click), Johnny Cash and Roy Cash Jr. I have it by Johnny McEvoy on his album "For The Poor And The Gentry". It's a very nice song.

I have a tape of that fine McEvoy album and it bothers me since decades that one of the song titles is truncated on my transcription of the titles:
It's 'Reflections take of...' and I'd love to know the full title.
And if you happen to have the lyrics of that song (it's the only song on that record that's too difficult for me to transcribe) I'd be very happy.

Hi Hell!

I am sorry to say that I do not have a tape or cd, just the record and at the moment no way to convert it. I will in the near future.

The full title is, "Reflections, Take 1". However, on the record it just says Reflections by J. McEvoy.

I have a lot of mixed music on tapes and I just may have that one lurking somewhere. I will do my best to find it for you. May take a bit of time. Blessings Reta

Thanks, Reta, for providing this information and promising more. Yes, that title makes sense to me now. I hadn't been able to find a tracklist of that record on the web. I have listened to several other McEvoy reords later, but I never liked them as much as I like 'For the poor and the gentry'.

My friend just brought in the tapes of the McEvoy LP recordings and I think I have most of Reflections figured out except for a word or two which I think will come soon.

REFLECTIONS by Johnny McEvoy

Thanks so much, Reta. This Johnny McEvoy record was the first folk record I ever bought and it was the first I tried to transcribe. I was quite successful as I found out later (when I found these songs in books or in Mudcat). But I gave up on this song.

Wolfgang, I do believe you have it. I listened to it a few times and The third time it came in clear.

I also think the word 'Youth' is correct in the last verse. It makes sense in the verse also. It's really a great song. I'm glad you needed the words otherwise it would have gone by without much notice by me. The loud echo is what throws me off of it. I do not like that sound, therefore, I just ignored the whole song.

I sure hope Catspaw is back soon.

Do You have McEvoy's "With an Eye to Your Ear" album? Portabello Road is on it and that is the one I loved best of all his recordings. I have to smile everytime I hear it. It's an all time great 'feel-good' song.

Hi Reta,

what a coincidence. 'With an eye to your ear' is the only other McEvoy album I have on tape (exception: a recent tape and a couple of rare life recordings from Germany back in the late 60s or in the early seventies). And just last Friday I tried hard to find those lyrics for they are the only ones on that album I do not have yet (too fast singing for my ear). I nearly found them, for I found a site with lyrics for the first Cat Stevens album which also has this song on it (obviously at least coauthored by Cat Stevens). But this was one of the few missing songs. You even can listen to that song on the web (http://catstevens.com/media/albums/daydo.html)! I'd love to have the lyrics though, for this song and "Bus 22 to Bethlehem" are the last two McEvoy song I still miss the lyrics of (to keep in the spirit of this thread). My favourite fro ever MvEvoy song will be "The hedgehog song" (taped from the radio), for I was in the audience when this was recorded and I was not alone and just when Johnny McEvoy sung "I'm not the kind to complain that I never had a girl to love" she took my hand. It lasted only about six weeks but I'll never forget that of course, for we were so young then. Beside that, it's not a bad song either.

By the way, I think this is one of the songs I sent to the Mudcat along with some other songs during the first part of the year. (Or maybe very late last yr.) None were ever posted so I figured I was doing it all wrong. I did receive a letter thanking me, but as I said, they never appeared. One was a very beautiful ballad called "Slaney Valley". Did U ever hear it?

I am going to attempt Bus 22 using a method Philipa suggested. She said to put
at the end of the sentences. Here goes.

BUS 22 TO BETHLEHEM by B. Cole

We rode a bus that was taking us to the town of Bethlehem.
We left at eight from Damascus gate from the edge of Jerusalem.
With old King David at the wheel we rode along our way,
Past the holy manger store and the three wise men café.
Seven thousand people filled the square.
The mayor and the governor were there.
Voices from the horde cried, "We want the Lord".
They were getting bored in Bethlehem.

Old men waved from the limestone caves and the friendly factory,
And everyone was laden down with crafts and rosaries,
With crucifixes, (sounds like cordaglans), the Star of David pins.
With misty eyes, and zoom-zoom pies we watched the show begin.
Five men dressed in ashes blew their horns.
A man put on the crown of paper thorns.
He gave a number coughs to his plastic cross.
We were all impressed in Bethlehem.

It represents that sad accent to the Hill of Calvary.
From underneath the grand stone bell Mrs. Jones replied, "I see".
In the dark the Patriarch was busy with his books,
While the Christians and the Muslims exchanged frozen looks.

Twisted by the passing centuries.
All you have to do, if you're passing through,

Well Wolfgang, I cried the whole time I was working to unravel the words to this one. I could not bring myself to use capital letters on the holy manger store or the three wise men café. It is a very thought provoking song.

I just looked at the clock and I have been over 2 hours with this one. Thanks so much for asking for the words as it is another I only listened to without really hearing it.

The word I couldn't make out must be a word for a Muslim icon of some sort as the Catholic rosary and Jew's Star of David are mentioned.

Hi Wolfgang, I just pulled up the Hedgehog song and It is cute. I have never heard of it before. The experience you had as a youngster would make it very special indeed. Nothing like a youth who is smitten.
Some of the wording in Bus 22 sounds so strange, perhaps asking in a new thread for corrections would smooth it out? I come up with the same words no matter how much I listen.

thanks so much for these two songs. I hear the music in my head when I read them silently. I have been away for nearly two weeks, that's the only reason for not responding earlier.
I'll relisten to these two songs tonight (my computer isn't where my music is).
just from memory: "sad accent" might be "said ascent". No, I never heard of "Slaney Valley", I'll have a look at that ballad.
Reta, do not expect to see your contributions in the DT much earlier than after about one year. They make the update twice a year and they have to do such a lot of editing and all that before the actual update that they (Dick, Max and Susan) just can't make it faster. You are not the first one to wonder though.

If 'Mudcat' doesn't have lyrics for "I Still Miss Someone" in their data-base of 'millions' of songs then you may find it at: http://www.nsknet.or.jp/~motoya/index.html You will have to edit them somewhat but the man has done a lot of work there. KB

with your lyrics before me, I relistened. Here's what I hear:

Portobello Road sounds perfect to me, perhaps (??) line 8 starting with 'all' instead of 'are'.

Bus 22:
- can't help with cordoglans
- verse 2, line 7: he gave an upper toss (?) (it should be toss for the rhyme.
- verse 3, line 1: I think it's "said ascent"
- verse 3, line 2: I rather hear "grime stone" (does it make sense?
- before last line, a typo: 'you're' should replace 'your'.

(does that make sense?)

"Grim stone" sounds good, but I still hear "grand"

Last line is "you're" as U have it.

I think we have gone as far as we can with it and it might be a good time to start a thread and ask if anyone else might know the words.

I think you are pretty close and if it were I, I'd just use what makes the most sense. I think I will surf about and see if McEvoy has a web site.

I caught another mistake, I think!

Verse 2, line 2, 'laden down with crafted rosarys'

Verse 2, line 7, 'upward toss', (you were right.)

I still hear 'sad ascent' in verse 3, line1.

Also, verse 3, line2, is still 'grand stone'.

I really think this is all correct.

As for 'cordaglans', I am going to call the college and see if a friend of mine from the East can figure that out.

thanks, it's getting better and better. And you are more than generous to say I was right when I had heard "upper toss" which is now "upward toss" and this way makes much more sense.
I volunteer another far shot: 'cordoglans' has the sound of 'caught a glance', but I can't fit that yet into the semantics of that line.
It's fun to approach more and more perfection.

I do believe that 'cordaglan' will be some sort of object that is connected to and used by Muslims in the practice of their faith someway. The reason I think that is because the rosary and star of David are mentioned in connection with the Catholic and Jewish faiths.
