New session in Hull

01 Sep 07 - 05:31 PM (#2138576)
Subject: New Friday night session in Hull
From: Cavia_P

We all had such a good time last night at the Hull Sea Fever welcome session...
So we have asked the landlady if we can run another songs, tunes, poems and stories session.
She's very enthusiastic about it and is getting another barrel of XB, as we emptied the last one.

The first session is next Friday (7th Sept 07) starting 8.30pm.

The White Hart is a traditional pub on Alfred Gelder Street near Hull City centre. The pub has decent ale and good acoustics in the back room. There is good access with car parking and a main bus route right outside the frontdoor.

The session is open to anyone that wants to perform or participate in any way, or just come along to socialise and enjoy the evening.

If this meets the needs of folkies in the area then it has the potential to develop into a regular weekly session.

Regards,

Cavia_P & Glevum

I'm in London now, so won't be travelling up especially for this -- but all the best with it. The White Harte's a lovely pub, and ideal for a session, I'd have thought. Well done for taking the initiative & asking. Smokers will also be delighted to know that there's a beer garden, if you need to nip out for a quick puff. ;-)

Funny but I was just wondering why Hull doesn't have a club/session although I've got to admit I'm only interested in sessions that have singers as well as muscians, might manage next Friday but we're often away at festivals at weekends - Good Luck
P.S. Could you post the post code, hoping it's to the west side of Hull, living in Rawcliffe Bridge!

The session is at the (New) White Hart, 109 Alfred Gelder Street, Hull. HU1 1EP. Between the Guildhall and Drypool bridge. Not so much west as central really. We had in mind more of a poems and pints with song and music type session, but you never know how these things will develop! We've nothing against all forms of folkie stuff but our preference is more vocal than twiddly.

Success with the new venture!! Sorry can't make it this week 'cos we has a gig, but will support were and when I can..

Talked to a lot of out of towners at the shanty fest this week and they were astounded that a city this size has no folk club - home of "The Watersons" and that. They all thought that the "Black Boy" was a folk club.I did point out to them that singers are not allowed/encouraged at the Black Boy pub.

They, like I, thought it is a great pity we all cannot get together in the intrests of keeping music live.

We (Hull folkies) have been talking about starting another folk session since Folk Union One folded. The Friday night sessions ran for a good few years at various pub venues finishing at the Kingston on Cumberland Street. I know there have been other attempts at running a folk club or just a regular session since then. I'm not aware of any that lasted for long, due to various problems.

We're starting up the White Hart Friday session and just see how it goes from there. We figure we've got a good venue and if it's on every week at the same time, participants can come along when it's handy.

It isn't a club, there are no memberships, no fees and no guest artists. Any one attending can take their turn and have a go if they want to, or not.
There should be no pressure to perform. Just come along and enjoy the company.

Cavia_P and Glevum

They have a barrel of Black Sheep waiting ready for us. Not the hoped for Theakstons XB, but no complaint here.
:o)

The first session should all kick off around 8.30 tonight, then we'll see where we go from there...

The new session at The White Hart kicked off pretty well.
The Black Sheep Special was excellent!
The landlord and landlady were welcoming and enthusiastic about the session.

There were six of the usual suspects performing songs, tunes and poems but mostly chatting. Some of the pub regulars came through but didn't join in this time.

This session was maybe too laid back. Next week I'll try and tighten it up so we start on time and get a few more performances in. Next Friday we'll make the seating arrangements more open rather than sat circled in one corner of the large back room.

Songs, Tunes, Poems and Pints
at the White Hart, Alfred Gelder Street, Hull
Each Friday, from 8.30pm

Getting from 'ull to the Beverley for a tenner is about the price most 'ull taxis charge.
However coming from Beverley to 'ull is a little differant - prices vary from driver to driver, firm to firm, the time of night, the cycle of the moon etc. etc. etc................... where prices of upward of twelve pund is not uncommen.

This sounds good
WHat are your boundaries re musical types at your meeting?
Can we come over and bash out a few of our own Folky(sounding) songs?
OR are you aimed at a more Traditional sort of Evening.
WHatever it is good luck and could just pop over for a listen even if not needed for playing.
Cheers
Tim

Tim,
Anything goes.
We sing, we play tunes, we recite poems and monologues, we sit and chat...
We tend to take turns, but it's not a rigid structure to the evening.
We want to keep it informal, it's not a Folk Club. Just a friendly venue on a regular date (White Hart, Friday, 8.30pm).

We've no PA facilities, but the venue doesn't really need amplification once they've turned the jokebox off.
There's a performance space (in front of the fire place) which we could use if enough people turn up.

You or anyone else is welcome to come along. Please join in or sit and listen.

Regards,

Chris and Jennifer

Last night was a smashing session. It went on past midnight, the Theakstons XB was pure nectar!

Learning has taken place!
We changed the seating and this made the session much more open. People from the other end of the pub came along to join in or just listen for a while.
There where the usual suspects performing. A couple of Canadians joined in so we sang them some Stan Rogers and they sang us some quite strange stuff, funny breathing etc.

It sounds like our sort of thing.
Tend to do glum or even dark stuff so hope there are plenty of upbeat types there to counteract us.
Cheers
and looking forward to it loads

This Friday 21st, there is a party with Karaoke at the White Hart.
We've been told that we're welcome to join in, but most of our regulars have found other things to do...
We should be back to our usual session next Friday (28th). You are very welcome to come along and join in.

Unfortunately Friday 28th may be our last session.
The landlady informed us this week that the brewery want to close the pub from 2nd October. We have no idea if or when the White Hart will reopen.
At this point we are looking for an alternate venue. If we find one we'll post the news on Mudcat and anywhere else we can.

Chris and Jennifer

Sweet Jesus, they can't close that place permanently! It's where the good people of Hull decided to close city gates to the King's forces during the English civil war & everything.

(We used to have our union meetings in the Plotting Parlour upstairs, many years ago).

Button,
Ye Olde White Harte is still going strong and in no danger of closure afaik. Thank goodness!

Our session is at the (New - 1904) White Hart near Drypool Bridge.

It's a listed building, including the wonderful ceramic bar and interior fittings so they can't easily demolish it. Unfortunately it doesn't make enough money for the brewery...
We don't know yet what's going to happen to it.

Tragic! Just bloody tragic!

On a Sunday in the mid '60's it was always a swift half in the White Hart after spending the the afternoon in the Coffee House and then the mooch down to Market Place and the Old Blue Bell for the Folk Union One session.

Glory days!

And we will be there if we can.

We have a new venue!

As from Friday 5th October we shall be meeting in the back room at the Bull Inn, on Beverley Road, Hull HU4 1AH.
The session is free and open to anyone that would like to perform or just come along and enjoy.

We went in last night and had a long chat with Martin the landlord.
He and his wife have really great plans for the pub and have already put in a load of work on bringing it back to life. They have six real ale pumps in the back room and a good range of draught lagers too.
They are planning on restoring the upstairs function room. He's very supportive of local performers and enthusiastic about our Friday night session.

Depending how it goes we may change days, but for now it's Friday nights at the Bull.

Friday 28th September will be our last session at the White Hart, it's picked up quite a lot of publicity so I'm hoping we'll have a great last night before the pub closes.

See you there,

Chris & Jennifer

Tim,
Weather's fine so far.
We are due to kick off at The Bull Inn on Beverley Road this evening from 8.30.
There's been a bit of local interest since the 'Ull Daily Mail picked up our notice and announced the 'Music Sessions' are on at the White Hart every Friday.
:o)

As it happens, the White Hart is still open.
"..A man from the council came round on Wednesday and prevented the owners from boarding up the White Hart because it's listed..."
so the owners are keeping it open until they can find a buyer.

See you at the Bull,

Last Friday's (26th) session at the Bull Inn was very disappointing.
Jenn and I turned up to find the landlord running Karaoke in the front room and the Pool Table in full play in the back room.
We could have moved the pool table when the players had finished, but it looks like Karaoke may become a regular feature.
We hung around 'til 9.00 and met Liz and Louise but didn't get a session going.
Jenn and I are away this weekend so won't be at the Bull this Friday (2nd).

The good news is, that the White Hart is staying open as a pub and the landlady would like us to come back.

Both of these were in Pubs that were a little run down and had Dubious reputations.
Oh well.

However, the landlord at the new place seems to know a good thing when he sees/hears it & 'though he's lots other events going on most nights, he was cosiderate enough to ask again for our contact fone numbers, 'cos he was planning a Halloween quiz night & to warn us in advance if it might disrupt our sesh.

In the end, it didn't & the Halloweeners joined in the sining & music with us.

Here's hoping u folks have better luck soon!
