What is your favorite band name?

Well, I haven't given this a ton of thought but I saw a thread posted today by the, "Flying Chaucers," and I thought - wow,
what a great name for a band - so my lot is is cast with the Flying Chaucers; but, what is your favorite band name; and yes, you can list more than one. In fact, you can even put forth a band name that no one has ever used but you think would be a great name.
I always though "Truncheon" would be a great name for a metal band. Have fun. Cheers.

When I lived in Liverpool in the 60's, the Liverpool Echo ran a competition for names for a pop group, can't remember what won but most unforgettable was 'Snotty and the Nosepickers!'

I badly wanted to call a band I was in Lemming Moran and the Tarts, but I was voted down.

A short-lived effort (but I did like the name) was Macswel's Friends .. you'd have to have met Macswel to appreciate the name. Macswel was a soft toy made by my Mum, with heaps of character.

Caustic Soda and the Bleach Boys

The thread Alice refreshed has the Sensitive New Age Cowpersons, I'm pleased to report. The first all female rock group in Oz (in the early 70s) that I heard about was called "Hen's Teeth"; unfortunately they didn't last very long. A couple of years later another all female rock group formed in Sydney, called "The Ovarian Sisters"; I think they lasted 4-5 years.

And, in the late 70s, I occasionally played (and sang the occasional shanty) with "Rum, Buggery and the Lash!" who did a great version of "Running Bare".

Cheers, Rowan

The latter was after a joke on (I think) Round the Horne referring to Lord Snowdon as Anthony Hamstrung-Bones.

A fave name I know is the Blues band - Cliff Rescue & the Helicopters

Brent Ford and The Nylons were in Birmingham in the 70s. And I liked the sound of Ricky Cool and The Icebergs (presume it's the same person now touring as Ricy Cool and The Hoola Boola Boys.

Hi Georgie - Nick Pallett from Principal Edwards (they later shortened their name to that) was a mate of mine at university and he there had a band called the Nathaniel Clackthorne All-Rubber Band.

One of my uni bands was Shaft and the Rocks (the lead singer was a mining engineer, see?) and one of my school bands was the Pink Perves. Another uni one was Wandering Hands and the Jailbait.

I am also the oldest surviving member of Roger the Chorister.

More currently, yes, I too think that the Flying Chaucers is a great name, and there is a snigger snogwriter female trio from somewhere near Cambridge called "Deadly Lampshade".

I liked the in-your-face element of Courtney Love's band name "Hole", and also "the Slits".

"The Chosen Few" is a pretty good name too.

I think that The Rolling Stones was a hell of a good band name. Inspired. Nice that they also turned out to be a hell of a good band.

Some other band names I think are quite good:

The Band       (The essence of simplicity! Smart.)
The Mothers of Invention      (although I did not like them much)
The Grateful Dead          (brilliant name!)
The Viletones
Stark Naked and the Fleshtones (a pun based on "The Viletones")
Sex Pistols
The Velvet Underground
The Clash
Voidoids
Cardboard Brains
Dead Kennedys (utterly tasteless...but very effective for its purpose)
Bunchafuckingoofs (the most honestly named band in the history of punk rock!)
Souxie and the Banshees
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
King Crimson
Meat Loaf (Conveys a lot, doesn't it? Or maybe not? Heh!)

I put a lot of punk bands on the list, because I find their names hysterically amusing. It's very odd to base a musical movement on total loathing for self, society and others...but they somehow did it. Quite extraordinary in retrospect.

A now-defunct Celtic group in Portland, which had at least 2 different incarnations with variations in the band's personnel, was "Howling Gael."   I love that name.

The Electric Prunes

Climax
In the Sixties, most of us wouldn't have understood the implication. I've been listening to some "bubblegum" songs and realized the lyrics were not as sugar and spice as whe thought. Oh my...)

Lemon Pipers
Speaking of bubblegum, here are some of the fanciful words that, when you take another look...)
"Take a trip on my pogo stick
Bounce up and down, do a trick
I'll play a beat on your pumpkin drum
And we'll have fun in the sun"
Now I KNOW how naive my friends and I were! How we managed to stay so sweet 'n' innocent in the craziness of the Sixties I'll never know.

Apologies if any of these were mentioned earlier, but:

    Sid Sideboard and the Chairs
    Us and Him
    Wit of a Banker
Women Wrestling in Mud (another that got complaints from disappointed punters)
Floating Crowbar (named after an electrical circuit?)
    Dickie Hart and the Pacemakers

but the ultimate most brilliantly tastless band name of all time has just got to be

Edward II and the Red Hot Polkas

" The Nicaraguan Over Eighties Nudist Leapfrog Team"

Thought it was a brilliant name then ................ still do come to think of it
