The only song with the word 'garret' in it that comes directly to my mind for now Barbara is this one, probably cause it makes me laugh and I love singing it.
I'll keep thinking however.
Best o' Wishes

AULD MAID IN THE GARRET

Noo I've aft times heard it said by my mother and my father,
That tae gang tae a waddin' is the makins o' anither,
If this be true, then I'll gang wi'oot a biddin',
O kind Providence won't you send me tae a waddin'.

Chorus :
For it's Oh, dear me ! whit will I dae,
If I dae an auld maid in a garret.

Noo there's ma sister, Jean, she's no handsome or good-lookin'
Scarcely sixteen an' a fellow she was coortin'
Noo she's twenty-four wi' a son an' a dochter
An' I'm forty-twa an' I've never had an offer.

I can cook an' I can sew, I can keep the hoose right tidy
Rise up in the morning and get the breakfast ready
But there's naething in this wide world would mak' me half sae cheery
As a wee fat man that would ca' me his ain dearie.

Oh, come tinker, come tailor, come soldier or come sailor,
Come ony man at a' that would tak me fae my faither,
Come rich man, come poor man, come wise man or come witty
Come ony man at a' that would mairry me for pity.

Oh, I'll awa hame fur there's naebody heedin'
Naebody heedin' tae puir Annie's pleadin'
I'll awa hame tae my ain wee bit garret -
If I canna get a man than I'll shairly get a parrot.

Take a look at "I Wonder When I Shall Be Married" in the Digital Tradition - it is probably a variant of what you are looking for.

Page 58, Ord's Bothy Songs and Ballads. Song is called "I'm gaun tae the garret". If no one else has provided the lyrics by the time I get back from Tesco, I'll do it :o)

Tom and Anne Reid of Cullerlie used to perform this as a duet and it was one of the last songs I saw and heard Anne sing before her untimely death last year.

I belive that Sandy Paton recorded that song on his very first album, back in the 1850's! Bob(deckman)Nelson

From: Drumshanty

Here y'are:
^^
I AM GAUN TO THE GARRET

"My mither has three butter platies."
"Platies?" "Ay, platies."
"My mither has three butter platies
And she's nae ither dochters but me."

"But I maun gang to the garret"
"The garret?" "Aye, the garret.
But I maun gang to the garret
Since there's nae bonnie laddie for me."

"My father's a wee white horsie."
"A horsie?" "Aye, a horsie."
" My father's a wee white horsie
And he's nae ither dochters but me."

"But I maun gang to the garret"
"The garret?" "Aye, the garret.
But I maun gang to the garret
Since there's nae bonnie laddie for me."

"My mither has forty white shillins."
"White shillins?" "Aye, white shillins."
" My mither has forty white shillins
And she's nae ither dochters but me."

"But I maun gang to the garret"
"The garret?" "Aye, the garret.
But I maun gang to the garret
Since there's nae bonnie laddie for me."

"But down in yon howe there's a miller."
"A miller?" "Aye, a miller."
"But down in yon howe there's a miller
And he sometimes comes and sees me."

"So noo I'm gaun to be mairrit."
"Mairrit?" "Aye, mairrit."
"So noo I'm gaun tae be mairrit
Before that my beauty decay."

I'm not totally convinced by that last line, to tell the truth, but I can't remember what Anne sang if it wasn't that. Ord doesn't provide any notes about the song, but there are dots for it.

Thanks Tracy for the words, was great to see and hear you at Kirrie.
I certainly heard a puckle more songs I would like to learn LOL. Can't believe what a bucket I made of Auld Roguey, couldn't get the tune for love nor money, think I was making it up as I went along. They called me out of turn and I just went to pieces LOL. Oh well never mind there is always another year another competition.
I hope your sister is okay, your Mum said she had been taken into hospital, very best wishes, Barbara x
I don't have a direct address for you, but mine is barjayne59@yahoo.co.uk if you want to get in touch. x

Sandy learned it [ie 'The Auld Maid In A Garrett'] while over here in 1958 from the Scottish singer Isabel Sutherland.

The Auld Maid in a Garret was sung in our house, round the piano, in the mid 1940s. Sometimes, after a few drams, my father would sing "carrot" instead of "parrot" in the last verse.

Robin Hall also used to sing "carrot".

I seem to remember writing a parody (as distinct from a "parrotty") of the chorus of "Auld Maid in a Garret" as a teenager, many years ago... Ironically, Johnny Moynihan of Sweeney's Men, who popularised it in Ireland, is now a neighbour of mine.

... and just to read her words above, I still have her voice ringing through my head from all the years that we were residents at the same folk club.
A very great singer was Isabel and a strong influence on my attitude towards traditional singing.
