BS: Really bad junk food

Subject: BS: Really bad junk food
From: Wesley S

One of the ladies in my office went to an amusement park over the weekend. Six Flags Over Texas to be exact. Here's a sample of some of the "food" that being offered:

Fried Oreos

Fried Peaches – a peach put on a popsicle stick, covered in batter and then deep fat fried and served with a scoop of ice cream.

Funnel Cakes covered with chocolate syrup and whipped cream. A funnel cake is dough that is deep fat fried {do you see a pattern here?} and then covered with powdered sugar. But they've just started adding the chocolate syrup and whipped cream.

While discussing these delicacies someone else in the office sent this story to me about - so help me - FRIED COKE:

"Now, vendor Abel Gonzales Jr. has come up with a new artery-clogging concoction for the State Fair of Texas. It's fried Coke.
Gonzales deep-fries Coca-Cola-flavored batter. He then drizzles Coke fountain syrup on it. The fried Coke is topped with whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry. Gonzales said the fried Coke came about just from thinking aloud."

Plus – for those of you watching your weight you'll be happy to know that you can now buy FRIED DIET COKE.

Are they trying to kill us?

Let's face it Wes, we just love that deep fried, uh........well, anything! Attending any county fair in Ohio will assure you of access to a range of deep fried veggies from asparagus to zuchini (literally). Then there are things for the more refined fat fried gourmet such as deep fried cheese, pickles, or ice cream....not to mention just plain bread and PBJ's too! And if you're talkin' funnel cakes you have to have a Dumbo Ear too.

I have often said that if you battered up some dog crap and threw it in the fat, somebody would eat it. I don't know what drives this strange compulsion but gawd knows we seem to have it bad in the Buckeye state.

Isn't there a song with a chorus that goes something like "Quack quack waddle waddle, quack quack waddle waddle?"

I was thinking particularly of the "waddle waddle" part.

Considering that according to recent figures I've heard, heart disease (clogged arteries) is the major cause of death in this country and that a good 30% of the population is considered obese, perhaps we could take that as our national anthem.

Very timely thread!

This past weekend, my family went with some friends to a local country fair, primarily to see Robinson's Racing Pigs (do a Google---or even better, a Google image---search: piglets running obstacle courses, 'nuff said!). Anyway, the pigs were awesome, and we had loads of fun looking at the prize-winning cattle, poultry and assorted vegetable matter, the kids went on rides, etc. Inevitably, the children became hungry during the course of the afternoon...after much searching for something evenly remotely nutritious, we finally managed to locate a booth that offered grilled chicken and/or veggies in a pita pocket, but it was NOT easy.

Now, I'm intelligent enough to know that the comestibles at such events are not necessarily (!) designed for the health conscious, and I'm as happy as the next person to choke down the occasional fried dough in the spirit of the occasion, but I was literally appalled at the stuff being sold as "food," with little or no alternative. Besides the fact that almost everything was deep-fried, it was almost impossible for the several vegetarians (some of whom are children) in our group to find anything to eat, besides ice cream or the above-mentioned fried dough. Obviously, the solution is to pack a picnic, eat lunch and then get some ice cream (much cheaper, too!), but it really was an eye-opener to see so many people making an entire day's diet of this stuff; unfortunately, those statistics aren't all that surprising...

It's coming up on fair season here in Maine and the only thing I ever get at the fair is hot apple crisp a la mode (as fair season falls smack in the middle of apple season!). I'm sure it's horrible for me, but I eat it once a year. Its the other shit we stuff our faces with the rest of the year that's going to kill us.

That said, I know a woman who once insisted on getting chinese food for lunch at the fair one year. You couldn't pay me enough! It was packed in tubs on the front seat of the guy's truck, no refrigeration, sitting out all day. Bleck!! I'm surprised Sam and Ella didn't pay my friend a visit.

Wesley,

The few times I've been to Six Flags were when the kids had the 600 minute reading club passes they give elementary school kids. The periods you can go free are when it's hot as Hell in there, usually July 1 to Aug. 15. I would pack a cooler full of ice and cold drinks and sandwiches and at lunch time we'd head out to the parking lot and drag our cooler under the trees (they have shaded and covered picnic tables out there) so the kids could have a little down time and "normal" food. When you go someplace like that on a budget, the concession junk food is usually what breaks the bank.

We had a horrible experience there with the "lemonade." Someone in the group announced it would be better if it wasn't watered down with ice, but that stuff is concentrated (we learned) and has to be poured over ice or it is undrinkable. It was a waste and we finally found a fountain to dilute the stuff after pouring out a lot of it.

At least at Six Flags the give out free glasses of water.

Becca 72 -- aplle crisp and icecream is real food -- not to be eaten in excess but real apple crisp and real ice cream equals real food. My philospphy on eating is real food - in reasonable amounts, stop when I am full and have a glass of wine pretty well as often as I want. Seems to keep me neat and trim.

Most any indigenous personage can tell you, it all started with them. Just take a lump of whatever passes for "bread" from any particular indigenous people, drop it in hot grease, & voila, the origins of State Fair Food. Or, just go to most any Pow Wow, and try the Fry Bread. Years back, I overheard an elder at a Pow Wow mention to another that only a White man would pay a whole dollar for a lump of dough cooked in grease. They both laughed heartily as they continued to eat their Fry Bread drenched with honey.

I dunno; the fried peach on a stick sounds pretty good.

In the Netherlands I used to get what I considered high quality junk food - deep fried, puff pastry wrapped, kirsch and marzipan stuffed apples, for starters. Nassi or bami bals (rice or noodles lightly curried, breaded and deep fried. Eibrodjes - half a boiled egg in thick bechamel sauce, on a rectangle of toast, deep fried. Or whipped cream two inches thick between two large round wafers.

Of course, you could always eat healthy by getting the raw herring with onions. ;-)

If you go to a country fair and look for an alternative, the alternative is don't go to the country fair! You don't go mountain climbing if you don't like heights, you don't go in a cave if you can't stand cramped spaces.   Feeding your kids veggies in a pita at a country fair?? That sounds like child abuse!!

Seriously, it is not something you would do on a weekly basis. Fried food is not bad as an OCCASIONAL treat. If you can do without, no problem there. Let those who choose it enjoy their deep fried oreo!

"Child abuse"? That's very funny!

Mea maxima culpa, but as it happens, several of the children referred to in my post are vegetarians and were on the point of just skipping the whole business or eating fried dough for lunch by the time we found those cruel and abusive pitas...maybe we redeemed the situation ever so slightly with the ice cream that followed? But now I'm rethinking the matter, maybe they just shouldn't be allowed to go to county fairs at all, no matter how much they enjoy the farm animals or the carnival rides. In any case, I have to agree that those 200 lb ten-year-olds certainly are fortunate to have parents who are willing to fork over $40 to make sure they get as much fried food as they can manage. It's the American way!

The ice cream was a good start Desdemona, perhaps if you squeezed in a hotdog (or at least a plate of french fries for the vegetarians - slathered in malt vinegar) you would be on the road to redemption.

Of course you do understand that allowing junk food like that once in awhile will not make a "200 lb ten-year-old".   The problem is that some parents do not offer balanced meals and feed their children regular diets of that crap. That is where the problem lies. There are usually other social problems involved as well. If you are doing a good job on a daily basis, which it sounds like you are, then you children will make the right choices.

Having a beer does not make a person an alcoholic.   Having a serving of fried dough or greasy food will not someone into an overweight slob.

I understand your plight if your children are vegetarians, but I do not think that a country fair should be required to offer meals to all diets. Was their any kosher or Halal food?

In re-reading our exchange, I hope I haven't inadvertently given the impression of being one of those paragons of inflexibility who won't let their kids eat a cookie! They're old enough to make their own choices, and are all pretty omnivorous (and since they're rapidly growing boys, the emphasis is definitely on the "omni"). While I'm basically a vegetarian, as are my partner's daughters, I'm not bothered about what other people eat one way or another, aside from what I assume is the general discomfort about the statistics viz. obesity, childhood diabetes, etc. in our country.

Obviously, the occasional greasy fast food meal isn't going to kill anyone, but I guess what bothers me about the situation at so many "family" oriented events is the implied assumption that, given their druthers, deep fat fried everything is what people *choose* to eat, ie, what constitutes a special treat. On those occasions when I eat something especially greasy and "junk"-y, a pretty yucky feeling usually follows, a reminder of why it's not a good idea to eati that way on a regular basis. Unfortunately, it's a sad fact that many people do make that sort of food their regular diet, rather than treating it as the occasional indulgence. Presumably it's all part and parcel of the "supersize me" phenomenon, but it seems like a telling indication of what our culture considers "good" that a major feature of a grand day out is the availability of as wide a variety of fried, fatty food as possible.

I used to be able to eat just about anything, but after a lifetime of that, I've met a few food additives that just plain make me sick. So when I go to the fair or the theme park I have to choose food carefully or end up suffering in the bathroom a few hours later. Depending on what the food is, it can hit me a lot faster. Sometimes things like the hot dogs and breads are actually a better idea than the fruit and veggies, because one of the culprits I have discovered is the pre-chopped veggies (lettuce in particular) are treated with something to keep it from wilting or turning brown. That stuff kills me.

Germany is ideal for food junkies. Everything mit schlag, except the sausages which are rich in pig fat.

Fried crickets! One summer in Austin, Texas, there was a cricket plague. They were everywhere and into everything.
At our favorite eatery near the campus, the attractive female cook was getting unwanted attention from a customer. He received his hamburger with a layer of fried crickets on the meat.

Fats are needed as part of a balanced diet. The problem is keeping the craving for excess fat at bay. Could be a genetic leftover from stone age days when those who had stored the most fat were more likely to survive winter and famine.

The restaurant critic on a local NYC TV station did Fair Food once. He tried the cotton candy, greasy funnel cakes, and a bunch of other stuff but could not bring hinself to even taste a corn dog. They gross me out too.

I think most of the food is fried because it is the simplest way to do it at a fair. At the San Gennaro Festival in lower Manhattan, drums of boiling fat line the streets and in them calzones are fried. Normally a calzone is baked but where and how do you set up a temporary oven?

Ron,
I can't let your statement "Having a beer does not make a person an alcoholic.   Having a serving of fried dough or greasy food will not someone into an overweight slob."

Overweight does not equate to sloppy. I carry quite a few extra pounds. I also wear clean clothes which match and/or coordinate. I have my hair cut and colored on a regular schedule. I shower daily, use deodorant, manicure my nails, pedicure my feet. I am overweight but not a slob.
And if I could figure out a way to lose the weight AND KEEP IT OFF I would. Diet and exercise? If it were that simple we would all be thin. There are a few other elements which feed (no pun intended) into it. And interestingly enough, food is low on the list.
I can name at least ten Mudcatters who like me have managed to lose 50+ pounds only to gain it back plus five more. It is a constant battle between what we want to do and what nature and nurture have programmed us to do.

A very popular brunch item at Elizabeth's, on the waterfront in New Orleans' upper 9th ward, is praline bacon ~ bacon with a coating of brown sugar and chopped pecans. (That's American-style bacon, of course, which is different from the "rashers" you get in Ireland or England, and also from Canadian backbacon.)

Further upriver ~ coincidentally, also right across from the Mississippi River levee ~ at the corner of Shrewsbury and River Road in Jefferson Parish, the Rivershack Tavern used to have as a menu item the deep-friend muffaletta. General public outrage at the existence of such a cholesterol bomb prompted them to take it off the menu, but rumor has it that those in the know can order it anyway and they'll fix you right up.

Even without being battered and fried, a muffaletta is quite a sandwich, filled with pretty much the same stuff as a NY/NJ-style Italian submarine sandwich ~ proscutto, salami, mortadella, and a couple of cheeses ~ plus the defining ingredient, a big glob of olive salad, all on a full round loaf of Italian bread. A muffaletta loaf is about 9-10 inches in diameter and 2-3 inches thick.

At the Rivershack, they make the sandwich, dip it in batter and breading and plop it into hot grease. Nice!

*****************************

Guilty-pleasure confession: I like corn dogs. I never ate one until about age 35, when they were about the only food available at my kids' elementary school fair, and it was "love at first bite."

Fast food fan fined for monster gorge

By staff writers

October 02, 2008 02:51pm
Article from: NEWS.com.au

    * Trainee nurse spends 1.5 hours eating at KFC
    * Fined for breaking restaurant car park's limit
    * "It didn't feel that long ... we were hungry"

A TRAINEE nurse who was hit with a $336 fine for staying too long while gorging on a monster-sized family bucket at KFC says she is "disgusted".

Natalie Jackson and a friend spent 1.5 hours eating fourteen chicken pieces, six bags of fries and large cokes at their local branch in West Yorkshire, England, The Sun reported.

The feast worth 5456 calories - 3516 more that the recommended daily calorie count for women - cost $29.50.

A few days later, Ms Jackson received a fine in the post for breaking the restaurant car park's 75-minute limit.

The 24-year-old, who eats at KFC three times a week, said she was unaware of the car park restructions, and was never going back.

"It's disgusting, I spend a lot of money there," she said.

"It didn't feel like I was in there all that long. We were hungry."

KFC told The Sun that restaurant parking was contracted to a private firm - but promised to review Ms Jackson's case.

A spokesman said: "A parking restriction was introduced to prevent non-KFC customers using the car park.

"The 75-minute time limit is designed to accommodate our customers who generally eat for about 30 minutes."

Homage to the Goddess of Chocolate ...

Chocolate Scrying
by: Ariadne/Caitlin/Carol

You will need: a white bowl with sloping sides, a double boiler, chocolate that melts, a dark brown candle, a stick of your favorite incense, a yellow M&M and a box of chocolates.

Melt the chocolate in the double boiler and pour it into the bowl, being careful to evenly coat the inside of the bow. Any remaining chocolate should be cooled and placed on a plate near the candle. Place the yellow M&M in the center of the bottom of the bowl. Light the candle and the incense.

Gaze at the yellow M&M while slowly nibbling the left over chocolate and/or boxed chocolate. Say words similar to these:

"Oh, Great Chocolate, without whom life would be so plain and thin, guide me as I meditate on your many forms."

Eat a piece of chocolate. Keep eating and gazing. Soon, a chocolate answer will appear.

At the end of the scrying session, dispose of the candle properly. Patiently remove the chocolate from the inside of the bowl and eat it, savoring every mouthful, and absorbing the visions of which you have just partaken.
