Subject: Obit: Funeral Arrangements for Col K. R.I.P
From: treaties1

Colin died peacefully in his sleep from a heart attack and his funeral has been arranged for Friday 7th September 2007 at 13.00 hours UK time at Skipton Crematorium. BD23 3BT

Departure from the Undertakers,( Hellewells Funeral Services, Burnley Road, Colne. BB8 8LA) is at 12.20pm
Because on street parking is scarce, suggested parking on the nearby ASDA car park, or alternatively go direct to the crematorium

Hopefully afterwards there will be a Jacob's Join in Colne Royal British Legion.
This venue has yet to be confirmed, but please bring food for yourself and one other

(inserted from later post, just in case folks don't read all the way through:)

LATE NEWS! Final sing off will now be at The New Palatine Club, 32 Norfolk Street, Nelson Lancs BB9 7FG which will be open 2pm onwards.

Colin's Mother Margery is absolutely overwhelmed by all the Mudcat messages and has willingly agreed that sympathy cards can be sent to her at 27 Hendon Road, Nelson, Lancs. BB9 9JL

Any donations in Colin's memory for the RNLI, may be sent to either Mrs Margery Kemp, the undertakers or direct to RNLI.. Cut & pasted from RNLI site:-

In memory giving :-
You can commemorate the life of a loved one by sending a donation to the RNLI in place of funeral flowers.

How it works :-
If you would like to remember a relative, friend or colleague in this special way simply telephone our Supporter Care Team on 0800 543210 or alternatively e-mail
pmiller@rnli.org.uk

Sorry I can't do blue clickies to road maps, but Eileen, Maurice and I, hope as many of you who can, will be there on Friday to give the big lad a last fitting send-off.

If I should go before the rest of you
Break not a flower
Nor inscribe a stone
Nor when I am gone
Speak in a Sunday voice
But be the usual selves
That I have known

Weep if you must
Parting is hell
But life goes on
So .... sing as well

For those who, like me are unfamiliar with the term 'Jacob's Join' it is similar to a faith supper or as its known in Yorkshire a 'fuddle' where everyone brings food for themselves and puts it into a pol with others. Always a good idea to bring a bit more for those who may not be able to contribute. Sadly I am unlikely to get there (seems only time off for teachers allowed is for 'close relatives') but I hope Geoff and Maddie will make it.

DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND WEEP

"Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow;
I am the softly falling snow.

I am the gentle showers of rain;
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush;
I am in the graceful rush.

Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.

I am the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die."

I do not have to work on Friday so I (and Lady Elizabeth) can get to Colne Railway Station at 11:41 which gives enough time to get to the Crematorium.

We will have to leave whatever happens at The British Legion Club at teatime in order to get back to Brighton at about 01:30 on Saturday.

If the opportunity presents itself I'll try to sing something for those of my Mudcat mates who are not able to get there.

What is dying?

The ship sails and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon
and someone at my side says 'She is gone'.
Gone where? Gone from sight, that is all; she is just as large as when I saw her.

The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the moment when someone at my side says 'She is gone' there are others who are watching her coming and other voices take up a glad shout 'There she comes'

and that is dying.

Our sincere condolences to all his family. I hope it is some consolation to know how much he was loved and respected by the whole folk community.

And, thanks to Theresa for putting the information about donating over the phone to the RNLI. Ours has gone in today.

I can't make it either as my aged parents are arriving from Australia tomorrow for an all too brief stay. I will go to my quiet place in the garden at the right time and send my thoughts to you all and to Col. I hate crematoria funerals anyway, but I would have liked to sing him on his way. There's something very healing about a large crowd of folkie friends belting out a big chorus in someone's memory.

The photo link on the other thread of Col and duckling is so beautiful, I will hold that in my mind as I do my little solitary ritual.

I think from now on, Father Christmas will have ColK's face for me.....

Lynne, the first time I took part in Secret Santa, in 2003, it was Col's face for me. He was my Secret Santa. And a fine and generous one he was, too. You're right, that is a beautiful photo. I'm just sorry I never got to meet him.

Of course, I can't make it to the funeral either, being in Oz, but I will stop and think about him at the appropriate time. What a great loss for us! And a bit of a wake up call for me too, considering I am 3 years older than him, and don't take as much care of my health as I should.

There is no finishing time for the Big Sing so late arrivals needn't worry.but should it peter out early the club is in walking distance of Eileen and Maurice's where a "gentle wake" might continue.

We are hoping to create a Friendship type Photo Album for Col's Mum so if you have a great photo print of Colin with other folkies, it would be great if you'd bring them along annotated on the back with details of who, what, when, and where.

I won't be able to make the trip across the pond, but it is not from lack of desire that this is so. Col, judging from these posts, was one of those giants that occasionally tread the path, touching all that come within the sacred circle of his presence, and leaves them feeling the warmth that only great hearts possess. Were I able to be there, I would certainly sing a song that ere I have only sung once publicly, at the funeral of my best friend. And that would be Dave Carter's "When I Go", which I became aware of from Jeri. It is a stunning lyic, and I would have been honored to sing it for all of you on behalf of this gentle giant of a friend. I commend to all of you, as you ponder, in this time of sorrow, the frailties of this life, the last verse of this wonderful song:

And should you glimpse my wandering form out on the borderline
Between death and resurrection and the council of the pines
Do not worry for my comfort, do not sorrow for me so
All your diamond tears will rise up and adorn the sky beside me
When I go

Though I wish I could be at Col's funeral to say my Goodbyes, as for many others my day job has got in the way. I'll be able to get home for 1pm, so I'll spend some quiet time with Richard while the service is on. We'll also try to get along to a Sing or Club during the evening to sing in Col's memory, and will certainly be making a donation to the RNLI.

While looking for a card to send to Col's Mum yesterday, one almost jumped out of the rack and will be posted today. It simply says:

A life that touched so many will never be forgotten. Many thoughts are with you today

Wishing safe journey to all travelling to Col's Leave-taking and thanks are due to all who are helping to make it possible for so many of Col's friends to join together for this day, either with arrangements, lifts, floor space, information or blue clickies.

Noreen: many thanks for putting up those photos, my copies are still on the matrimonial PC so I haven't seen them for some years, a lovely memory!

The Big lad had a terrific send off. Over 200 people made it to the crematorium, The Shellbacks and nearly everybody raised the roof. The Jacobs Join meant everyone had plenty to eat and the cash collection in Colin's memory raised £215 for the RNLI. Shellbacks scheduled to sing at Great Yarmouth had to leave the New Palatine Club early. Colins Mother joined us at 3.00pm and stayed for over two hours. By mobile phone Albuwood liased with others and provided two verses and a chorus a play on the Keith Marsden song "She wheeled the coffin down the aisle with two verses completed two more versespenned whilst still on route were too late to be sung by Theresa who with a little help, quickly taught the chorus which was sung lustily to the enjoyment of Col's Mum

"They came from near they came from far, they filled up every pew,
Because he was a steward and his mother never knew_
How much this Yorkshire Lad was loved, from Brighton to Dundee.
And they brought a lot of food with them so they could have some tea"
Thanks to the wonders of Mudcat, the speed of spreading the news meant that a sad day ended in a tremendous send off.

This has all given me goosepimples and a lump in my throat. The funeral itself sounds wonderful, but the number of people who were adding their thoughts from all over the place too....I'm so glad it comforted his Mum.

I know people say this sort of thing when anyone dies, but I think that in this case it's really true. He was a very special person. Must have been to have called forth this amount of grief and love with his passing. I've only known him about three years but it seems as though he's always been there.......

Lost for words once again....

Goodbye Col

I am not known for my song writing ability, nor posting my thoughts so publicly but Colin was special.

We left straight from the crematorium but I was texting Mitch, Elizabeth and Theresa as Steve drove along to see how it went.

You know Theresa - when she got a few words she said that's it I am going to sing it! Mitch had some ideas too and Elizabeth helped fit some of the words in a verse but here is what came out.

Elizabeth called us on Steve's mobile so we could hear it on the car speakers as therea sang - it was great!

Colin's Funeral Song

We set off early morning on a clear and sunny day
We 'ad to go to Yarmouth, so we knew we could not stay.
So driving down I wrote this for a very special gent,
So if you couldn't be there you could 'ear just 'ow it went.

They came from near they came from far,
They filled up every pew,
She knew 'e was a steward,
But 'is mother never knew how much this Yorkshire lad was loved,
From Brighton to Dundee.
And they took a lot of food with them so they could 'ave their tea.

Some they came by train or plane,
Some they came by car,
Some met up at the Rhubarb, so they could 'ave a jar.
Then shared lifts together, so they would not be late
But the car park was so full they 'ad to park outside the gate!

The funeral directors came close to stand and stare,
The vicar said he's never heard such singing like that there,
They sang so loud, they sang so clear they, made the rafters ring!
And 'e asked us were we free on Sunday – at his church to sing?

There was a bit of crying, but the tissues they was shared,
And lots and lots of hugging, as we all showed we cared.
We loved 'im and we'll miss 'im, but life it still goes on.
And we will all remember 'im when we join in this song.

So there it is - apologies to Keith Marsden!

Disappointed as I was not to have been there, like Lynne and others I feel very gratified that Colin had such a send-off, because he certainly deserved it.

What an example of a man. Unassuming and asking for little, giving so much all the while. May we all be remembered/loved one tenth as much as he surely was/will be.
