Arrogant Worms & Second Fiddles in New Jersey

Subject: ARROGANT WORMS & SECOND FIDDLES IN NJ
From: WFDU - Ron Olesko

The Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club will open our new season, in our new home, on Saturday September 15th at 8:00pm when we present "Canada's Clowned Princes of Comedy" - The Arrogant Worms and an exciting old-time string band from NYC - The Second Fiddles.   The concert will take place at the Fair Lawn Community Center, 10-10 20th Street in Fair Lawn, NJ.

We are very excited about our move to the new Fair Lawn Community Center. We will present our concerts in the Center's 171 seat auditorium with comfortable theater-style seats, state of the art digital sound and lighting, and a large stage that is very close to the audience creating a cozy environment. Pictures of the site, plus descriptions and music samples, can be found at our new "blog" - www.hurdygurdyfolk.blogspot.com.

The move was made possible by our new partnership with the Borough of Fair Lawn. We are happy to offer quality entertainment to Bergen County residents at reasonable costs.   Fair Lawn is about 20 minutes from NYC and can also be reached by train! (The FLCC is about 1/2 mile from the train stop). Plenty of free parking is available.

Having the Arrogant Worms as our first headliners is an event that I have been looking forward to for a long time. If you have not heard the Worms, you are in for a treat. Think Marx Brothers with guitars. Their songs poke fun at a variety of "issues" - the plight of shipwreck balladeers, the brutal acts of vegetarianism, Celine Dion, and the culture of their Canadian homeland. They have been entertaining audiences across North America, and we are proud to bring them to Bergen County.

Our opening act is the Second Fiddles, an exciting group of musicians who have been at the front of a traditional music renaissance that is taking place in the NYC area.   The group performs a blend of pre-war blues, old-style country and swing music. They are fun to watch - huddled around a single mic singing in an old-timey style.

It should be a memorable evening! For more information, please visit our website - www.hurdygurdyfolk.org . YOu can order your tickets online with a major credit card or Paypal account (you do not need a Paypal account to order.)   With 171 seats, we encourage advance sales. Tickets will be available at the door, and they are also available through mail order.

For more information, you can call our "hotline" -(201)384-1325.

Just a refresh. I'm sort of surprised that NO ONE showed any interest in this.   Where are all the music supporters in the NJ/NYC area??   Comeon, our friends across the pond can post a note that someone is going to show up at a pub concertina in some dinky little village in the U.K. and 59 people post notes in the hour!   Where is the support here in the U.S.???

While the Worms are not a "traditional" folk group, their appearances at festivals in North America have received rave reviews.   I've seen them a number of times, and I would attend this show even if I were not involved!   The Second Fiddles are a more traditional old-timey band and groups like theirs need support and interest.

I really hope that local folkies will come out on Saturday Sept. 15th for a great evening of music.

Ron

I saw the Worms here 'over the pond' at Edinburgh Folk Club last year. They are well worth the effort to go and see. I promise that you'll be singing Rippy the Gator (with actions) for days. Carrot Juice is Murder, The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, and many more.

I forgot about Rippy the Gator!   Nowe I will have that song going through my head... thanks Ian!!!

You mentioned the "actions" they perform during that song. I love the energy that they display when performing. We have a very large stage and I can't wait to see them use it to full advantage.

Yet another thinly disguised "refresh" in a vain attempt to grow an audience for folk music here in the Northern NJ/NYC metro area. Come out and support live music!!!!

Maybe you should post links to the bands websites etc. to attract people, Ron.

Sorry that is a little far for me...

Best

Ron,

I'd love to hear the Worms again. I got a big kick out of them at Old Songs & bought 3 of their recordings. No, they are not very folky, but they are certainly quirky, fun, & sing-alongable. Looks like Teaneck is a couple hours away for me & I'm heavy into the start of the school year, but I'll check my calendar. Thanks for letting us know.

My 17 year old son would really like to come hear the Arrogant Worms...unfortunately, he's in Tucson, Arizona and that won't be possible at this time.

You will all be there in spirit!    Thank you for your kind thoughts. Our ticket sales have picked up and while I doubt we will have a sellout, I am confident that we will have a good and enthusiastic crowd. Tickets are still available online at www.hurdygurdyfolk.org

By the way Barbara, the Hurdy Gurdy is now located in Fair Lawn, NJ - about 10 minutes from Teaneck. Fair Lawn is about a 20 minute drive from the George Washington Bridge (maybe less with no traffic and a good wind).

Here are some websites to check out the Arrogant worms - www.arrogant-worms.com

and the Second Fiddles - www.secondfiddles.com

I'd LOVE to see the Worms again; they played at the Huntington Summer Arts Festival on Long Island about five years ago and were great.   Unfortunately, I've got a prior commitment that night at the Folk Music Society of Huntington's first Hard Luck Cafe of the new season.   I'm sure the show will be terrific (as will ours, naturally).   Hope you do have a sellout; the Worms are a must-see as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks Ray, and to everyone who has added their good thoughts about the Worms.

Of course I realize that everyone cannot attend - especially with a group as widespread geographically as Mudcat.   It really does help when people show support, even with kind words. It seems we have a tougher job here in the United States of "promoting" folk music. I'm always amazed when someone from the U.K. posts a note about a session somewhere and 100 people throw their support to it.   It seems that when similar notes are posted about events in the U.S., the responses are few. I guess there are a lot of reasons for that.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. I do thank everyone who has pitched in to show support.   Good thoughts spread, and hopefully we will have a successful concert on Saturday night. It is so important to support live music - without an audience, it all goes away.

Thanks again. If any of you can make it on Saturday, please be sure to say hello!

I'm a Worms fan, though I have not had the fortune to see them in concert. Unfortunately, getting up to NY/NJ, Old Songs, or Musikfest for a concert is difficult, even from MD. (Schedule kills it, pretty much).

Now if anyone with a decent venue could actually persuade them to voyage south of the Mason-Dixon line...I know enough Worms fans in this area who could be persuaded to show up.
