Advice, please: music in Halifax, NS. Sept 19-22

A friend will be in Halifax, Nova Scotia Sept. 19-22, 2007 attending an advanced acupuncture training course. Can anyone here suggest where she might find good music (and good food) in Halifax? While not a musician herself, she appreciates good music, and she's been very kind to me. I'd like to line up a few possibilities to help her enjoy whatever free time she may have. I'll print out your suggestions for her.

Many thanks,

maeve

Maeve. Had posted a longish msg 2 hours ago with info. Will try to refresh my head as to what I said.

There are two places I would start with

Old Triangle
O'Carrolls

Both are great. The Triangle will be featuring John Ferguson & Roger Stone from Wednesday to Saturday. - Both are talented singers and instrumentalists with a large repertoire of trad and modern songs ( ie James Tayler, Stan Rogers, John Prine, Bob Dylan), including Will the Turtle Be Unbroken from John.

O'Carrolls will have Dave Stone from Sunday through to Thursday. He's a skilled songwriter but also has a good selection of songs from other people or trad songs. Dave is a distant cousin to Roger. They come from the same community in Cape Breton. John is from another town in Cape Breton. - Friday and Saturday, the entertainment @ O'Carrolls will the Gig Dogs. - They're a group of talented instrumentalists who play extremely well and sing some songs. They banded together and each sing some of the songs and all have instrumental solos throughout the show.

All are good friends of mine and I highly recommend them.

IF your friend is looking for Rock music or Meat Market pickup joints, these pubs won't do. I can supply some other names if needed.

George- That's a wonderful start! No rock or meat market pickup joints wanted at all, LOL! Thank you very much. She's a smart, interesting lady who will be looking for a safe and relaxed break from her studies. I appreciate your recommendations and look forward to any others.

Are there any other 'Catters with recommendations for good music and good food there? Thanks for the 2 suggestions, George.

Don't think there are many Haligonians here. IF they are they're among the lurkers.

That's fine, George. I think she'll have a good choice of music and meals with your suggestions. I really appreciate it! Have a good evening.

I live quite a ways out of Halifax, so I don't have a good grasp on venues anymore, but there are usually local free papers (Coast comes to mind) available at ferry terminals, libraries and news stands, which will often have a run down on what music's being played at which bars/pubs/cafes.

Downtown Halifax is small enough to travel about and sample a bit.

Hope your friend enjoys her visit.

So, I hope your friend comes out to the Old Triangle tonight or O'Carrolls tomorrow or either on Friday/Saturday.

Out of curiosity, what's your friend's name?

Oh, forgot to say that BOTH places have excellent food. Great menus and they are shown on their web-sites as well.

I was in Halifax back in July and there was a fine tune session downstairs at The Henry House. The musicians were friendly enough and the food wasn't bad either.

It is a great session. I assumed that they might not be around Saturday night, or they might want songs, rather than tunes for 3 or 4 hours straight, which is all the session will give. Henry House also has a great menu, though a bit pricier than in pubs.

Thanks, Peter, Bee, and George. My friend left Maine early this morning. Please forgive me for not giving you her name, George. I hadn't asked her for permission to do so. She was delighted with the suggestions from Mudcatters, though, and hoped she'd have time to follow up on some of them.

Thank you all very much!

That's OK Maeve. No one came up at the Triangle last night. See what happens at O'Carrolls later tonight

Well, George, remember that she's there for an intensive training session. She didn't know what time, if any, she'd have for searching out some live music. With the long drive up on Wednesday night, I wouldn't expect her to feel like going out at night until Friday or tonight at the earliest. I just hoped to give her a starting point in case she did find some time for a break.

Even so, I hope she does have a chance to look into your good suggestions!

Well no one stepped up to say hello. It's now Saturday and I've been in the OT or OC every night, and most evenings spent time in both. I'm at the OT right now, and in about an hour will be over at OC

It's as I thought, George. My friend says they all worked hard the whole time, except when they grabbed a bite to eat or dropped into bed to sleep. She never got out for any music or special food. Thanks again for your help and your willingness to welcome her to town.

On a different note, I've sent you a PM regarding to your site's version of Taladh Chriosda.

Thanks for the update, Maeve. Let us know the next time if someone's coming.

Will look into full translations of Taladh Chriosta. Don't recall if I've ever seen one.
