Hello

If you are in or around Birmingham, I'm organising a 'charity do' on Suunday, 23rd September at the KRBL Social Club in Station Road, Kings Heath (just off the High Street). This is a fun event for the Red Ballon Appeal for the Birmingham Children's Hospital Burns Unit.
It will all be going on from 4.00pm to 8.00pm with plenty of opportunity for open mic. Tickets £5. Good bar at reasonable prices.
For more information re the venue 0121 444 3608.

Hope to see some of you there

Regards Aye

Nigel

Is that THE Nigel Denver? If so, what fantastic memories the mention brings back......

Folkestone Sea Front Pavillion. 1966 a year easily remembered.

Nigel Denver, Shirley Collins, Young Tradition and the Watersons + the regular seaside organist - Stan somebody or other.

Nigel "Stan you come on floor playing 'I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside' and we'll take it from there.

So on comes the organist who played IDLTBBTS and then stood in the wings bemused for the next 20 minutes until he realised he was not needed!!

What a shame.
We are in Acocks green on the Saturday and on Sunday celebrating our daughters birthday at Drayton Manor Park.
If it had only been on the Saturday!!!!!!
I was going to watch the Villa on the Saturday, but they switched it to the Sunday. So thats 2 things I can't do.

Certainly looks good to me Les.

We might even get Lizzie Cornish there if Show of Hands are on!! Mind she will probably be in Canada.

Hi Colin, Modesty to one side - yes I guess I am THE Nigel Denver.
Les - Sorry you can't make it. Question - You do know that Drayton Manor Park isn't actually in Acocks Green I suppose. (Sorry, couldn't resist).
and Folkiedave - Remember it well mate. You were obviously there. Wish I could place you, but you don't give me much to go on.
Giok - I've a feeling I should know you?
Good Luck

Nigel

I gave you even less to go on Nigel, but recall with great joy your exemplary, fullblooded, (could even say France v Scotland type) performances at the Bishop Auckland folk club which I ran, after a fashion, late 1960s to about 1970

Yes you should Nigel, I was a regular at Surbiton Assembly rooms, ran the Coach and Horses Folk Club in Kew. I was involved in a few west London clubs, and went to Les Cousins and The Troubador regularly.
We have met, but I couldn't give you chapter and verse how often or where. Remember it was before the days of the breathalyser most of it.

This thread set me googling, and I found this page of photos from the Troubadour days, including Nigel, and others - including Martin Carthy looking about 12.

Oh wonderful Kevin, nice to see Martin and Redd, both are now deceased I'm afraid. I'd forgotten about the screen and the chair that sat on the stage sometimes to cover the entrance to the wee sweat box [an old coal cellar I believe] behind the stage.
I seem to remember it had opaque glass squares on the roof which were part of the grille let into the pavement outside the Troub.
Dizley might not be too flattered by the description given on that page, I wonder if the White Bear mentioned was the one at Hounslow where the Strawbs used to be residents?

Hi Colin

Can't really put a face to the name, but I remember having a great time everywhere I went in the North East. I'm sure something out of the ordinary happened when I was in Bishop Auckland one time .... a murder or something??????

And John (Giok)

Hi, Yes of course - great to hear from you.

Nice to know there are still survivors around to keep me company.

Best wishes to all

Nigel

Nigel: The coincidence of you being at the club during some momentous local event, but with a perfect alibi, rings a bell and before anyone suggests otherwise, such occurrences (murders in Bishop Auckland) were fairly rare
If you feel like it, would you drop me a line at colinrandall1@gmail.com to bring me up to date with your last 30 or 40 years - I'd love to write about this thread, and the memories it inspires, at my blog Salut! Live

McGrath in Harlow: Any idea of a contact for the photographer so that I can seek permission to use one or two of the pictures with the above-mentioned posting?

Younger Mudcat folk will wonder what on earth we are going on about, but Nigel truly was one of the great one-man folk acts of the era in which I was running clubs and I am delighted that he is still, from the evidence of others, going so strong.

Just a quick question for Nigel. I learned "Bruce Richard Reynolds" from your 'Rebellion' LP but I always wondered who actually wrote it. Can you enlighten me...please!!!?

No excuses matwe, just apologies. I'm known on the Mudcat as Burl, but you may remember me by my real mane, Roy Harris. Good Luck, All Best. Burl.

Hi Pat and Brigitte, Hope you're both keeping well

Who knows! Could be. Couldn't make Rothenburg this year as you know.
The gig on Sunday is looking good - tickets going like 'hot cakes'.

And hello Frank Moloney - Long time no see. I kept those sessions going until a few years ago (twenty five years in all).

Thank you all for your good wishes, and - just to finish this thread where it started - the fund raising event yesterday on behalf of the Birmingham Children's Hospital Regional Burns Unit went well. A great time was had by all - my thanks to all the musicians who came along, and to a brilliant and generous audience. The money has to be re-counted, and there are pledges to call in - but we easily reached our target.
